Cloning goes to the movies

Abstract: public attitude research conducted by biotechnology australia shows that one of the major sources of information on human reproductive cloning is movies. traditionally, understanding of new and emerging technologies has come through the mass media but human cloning, being so widely addressed through the popular culture of movies, is more effectively defined by hollywood than the news media or science media. but how well are the science and social issues of cloning portrayed in box office hits such as the island, multiplicity, star wars: attack of the clones and jurassic park? these movies have enormous reach and undoubted influence, and are therefore worth analyzing in some detail. this study looks at 33 movies made between 1971 and 2005 that address human reproductive cloning, and it categorizes the films based on their genre and potential influence. yet rather than simply rating the quality of the science portrayed, the study compares the key messages in these movies with public attitudes towards cloning, to examine the correlations.

Abstract: this article analyses the relation between brazilian movie producers and the state in the creation of agencies for incentive and protection of brazilian cinema and in the elaboration of cultural projects aiming to use movies as an instrument of education and propaganda during the "estado novo" (1937-1945). in the 1930's and 40's, brazilian movie-makers, fascinated with systems of official cinematographic production in germany, italy and the ussr, vindicated similar interventions of the brazilian government, considering them as necessary for the implementation of a national cinematographic industry.

Abstract: in this paper, we try to tell the history of the exhibition of sex in movies mainly produced in the united states in almost a century. asking when, why and how the united states became - from a culture that did not exhibit sex - into a culture that exhibits it, the author insists in the double sense of the verb to screen (as both a revelation and a dissimulation). to exhibit is to reveal in a screen. but another, and important, sense, as says the dictionary, is "to protect or hide behind a screen". movies show as well as they reveal. the paper analyzes the way social change in the united states, for example the sexual revolution of the sixties and new views on sexuality allowed new ways of representing sex in the movies, creating a new relation between public and private. the paper also asks how our bodies and senses react to sex in the screen, introducing the idea of "carnal knowledge".

Abstract: this is a explanatory work with the intent to establish a dialogue between the julian jarrold's movie becoming jane and the jungian conception of the individuation process. it was observed that the movie makes many references to the jung's work, being, the main plot, a perfect example (intentional or not) of the process of personal development, by the junguians known as individuation process. on the analyzed movie, the main character passes through the difficult process of discovering of one self. this is a very common experience which can be noted on many people's life and is essential to self realization.

Abstract: this article points towards working out a series of suppositions taken for granted in relation to what it means to make movies. from its first years, when the idea of cinematographic production was naturalized. this collective image made possible the consolidation of the film industry as art and, at the same time, blocked out possible alternatives of filmmaking. in such sense, this text wants to, through a series of observations; make visible the ideological budgets hiding behind this naturalization of the cinematographic production.

Abstract: it is described the use of parts of movies produced by the motion pictures industry, as a motivation element for high school students, in studying a specific matter in physics. the subject fluids was treated with the use of pieces of four titles. the clips were exhibited in five distinct moments, from which each of five blocks of a topic was studied. the proposal was experimented with classes of the school ''escola de ensino médio almirante lamego'', in laguna, state of santa catarina, a seashore town. the study of ships and their construction was explored including, also, fluid dynamics, which normally is not a matter of high school curriculum in brazil. in spite of being a simple teaching experiment, not a research project, the work was inspired on the vygotsky theory of human historical-cultural development, and the theories of meaningful learning of ausubel and novak. it was observed that the students showed an increase in motivation and involvement with the class, with a higher perception of the link of physics with their reality; also, as spectators, they have become more critic about films.

Abstract: this work, from the analysis of film in not-commercial format, reflects about the existing tensions between the visible city, configured in the talk town planner, and the express, subjective cities in the routine practices of his consumers. the center of the argument consists of the idea of that the film in study configure a semantic guerrilla that planned to perform news readings of the urban space from the location and occupation of the places of the city by means of tactical movements. the body of springs is composed for six film of the "spectrum torquato neto" rolled between 1972 and 1974 in the cities of teresina (pi) and rio de janeiro.
Movies in chemistry education

Abstract: This article reviews numerous studies on chemistry movies. Movies, or moving pictures, are important elements of multimedia and signify a privileged or motivating means of presenting knowledge. Studies on chemistry movies show that the first movie productions in this field were devoted to university lectures or documentaries. Shorter movies were limited to a single experiment, to be used in the classroom. Movies for preparing for laboratory work and examinations appeared later. The article offers useful information about the ways in which chemistry movies have been used in the last half-century and the benefits such movies provide students in the school environment. The article also offers recommendations on perspectives concerning the training of teachers who are involved in using chemistry movies as a method of instruction in their classes.

Abstract: If we suppose the media are the linking elements in the social organization, as well as structure elements of the contemporary society, we think the medium cinema as a place where powers can be exercised. The theme is human finitude. Through the representation of the vampire in the movies based on the books – Dracula, by Bram Stoker, Interview with the Vampire, by Anne Rice and Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer – we will think about the “bargains” established between the man and his finitude. Through the figure of the vampire and its mutations, we will meditate on the human wish for more-life. We live the paradox between the wish to be human an immortal, at the same time. This paradox ails the vampire as well as the human. Being mortal continues to define us. Foucault is the basis for this path, when the author indicates the attention to be given to the conditions of the possibility of speeches.
