Une sociologie de l’existence est-elle possible ?
Danilo Martuccelli
SociologieS , 2011,
Is a sociology of existence possible?Starting from the diagnosis of an increasing assertion of existential questions in contemporary societies, this article interrogates ways that sociology can address them. In the first part, it comes back to the great principles of existential philosophy particularly on Sartre’s work, that has, more than anyone else, explicitly marked the major essays of an existentialist sociology as well as the dead ends of these attempts. In the second part, relying on the previous conclusions, this article will develop the reasons of the rise of socio-existential themes in modernity, and it will answer the question of why, and especially how, sociological analysis can and must study existential questions.
A Freedom that Makes the Difference: Feminist Thought and Critique of Modernity Una libertà che fa la differenza: pensiero femminista e critica della modernità
Raffaella Baritono
Scienza & Politica : per una Storia delle Dottrine , 2012, DOI: 10.6092/issn.1825-9618/3197
Abstract: This introduction emphasises the relevance of the theoretical feminist reflection presented by Wendy Brown in her Politics Out of History. The Italian translation of the book, which introduces Brown’s thought to the Italian public for the first time, provides the opportunity to deepen the understanding of her feminist contribution to the comprehension of the crisis of sovereignty. The book, in fact, could be investigated as a sort of link between, on the one hand, 1990s Brown’s reflection on the crisis of liberal universalism, political modernity and on the gendered constructions of such concepts as State and citizenship and, on the other, her more recent analysis on the reconfiguration of power and sovereignty in the age of globalization as expressed in her 2010 Walled States, Waning Sovereignty. At the core of her reflection, a crucial role has been played by the deconstruction of the nexus freedom-power-rights that enlightens the ambiguities, the semantic ambivalences and the political-theoretical traps inherent in the linear and progressive narration of political modernity.

The Tintoretto Effect: Longhi, Sartre, Bernhard Effetto Tintoretto: Longhi, Sartre, Bernhard
Stefania Rutigliano
Between , 2011,
Abstract: Searching for the core of Tintoretto’s ‘modern’ thinking and for his attractivity, the issue touches two different perspectives on the Venetian painter. Different in genre but not so in content, Sartre’s essays on Tintoretto’s paintings and Bernhard’s novel Ancient Masters look at the new relation between the painter and his public as a fundamental feature in his way of working. The painter’s aspiration after changing the city, its people and the same rules of the art market is not his only way to go beyond the limits. Also useful for this aim is the theme of perception, of looking, that, peculiarly developed by Tintoretto, as Sartre displays, becomes also an interesting aspect in Bernhard’s novel. In the presence of a rather nonfamous portrait by the Venetian painter, The Man with a white Beard, the novel goes beyond and debates on great general artistic questions: originality, masterpiece, tradition and critic.
The article reopens the question of the relationship between novel and sociology. Once cited the proximity of the two initial knowledge’s projects, it questioned the reasons for their growing distance today, before proposing, based on the works of some French contemporary novelists, a renewal of discussion. It's as a possible source of sociological imagination that novel knowledge is discussed in three main analytical directions: figures of post-social character; describing situations through the concept of ambiance; and emphasising mechanisms chains more contingent of action.

The meaning of African and “White man’s” food at Muslim and civil wedding celebrations in urban Burkina Faso
Liza Debevec
Anthropology of Food , 2008,
Muslims of Burkina Faso celebrate weddings in two distinct ways; a “traditional” celebration accompanies the religious ceremony, while a “civil” wedding party marks the official marriage which takes place at the town hall. The foods served are important markers of the contrasts between these two occasions. While so-called “African” food and drink is served at the traditional ceremony, the civil ceremony is marked by the serving of tubabu dumuni or “white man’s food”. Another distinction is the manner of eating. At the traditional meal guests eat from shared bowls, using their hands, while at the “civil” celebration the food is served on plates and is meant to be eaten with cutlery. Drawing on these two ceremonial forms and the marked distinctions between them, this paper discusses the ongoing discourse of “traditional” versus “modern” in urban Burkina Faso.
Ann Banfiled, The historical development of narrative style Ann Banfield, Lo sviluppo storico dello stile narrativo
Sara Sullam
Enthymema , 2010, DOI: 10.6092/2037-2426/580
Abstract: The paper briefly summarizes the proposal made in 1965 that "Poetic Competence" is the basis for creating and evaluating poetry. That this competence lives on, but is different from linguistic competence is exemplified by a close look at the segmental and supra-segmental, morpho-syntactic, lexical, and conceptual structure of H lderlin's poem An Zimmern, revealing a surprisingly complex and balanced structure of the apparently simple four lines. The second part of the paper discusses the question whether judgments about poetry are to be studied as based on the relation between specific properties of poems and persons. Finally the problem is raised, whether literary art is based on a specific Poetic Competence, or instantiates a general aesthetic ability applied to linguistic objects. This is construed as a speculative, but still empirical question.
Antecipa es e retrospectivas: A poesia portuguesa na segunda metade do século XX Anticipations and Retrospectives: Portuguese Poetry in the Last Decades of the Twentieth-first Century Anticipations et rétrospectives : la poésie portugaise dans la seconde moitié du Xxème siècle

In view of the return to textualization in the 1960’s – a tendency that is also to be observed in the French and Spanish contexts – the poets’ reaction in the next few decades is often quite strong. The question to be asked is whether there is a fundamental difference between these two positions, which seem to give rise to apparently distinct poetics. Is there in the second half of the twentieth century a moment in which we might speak of a break? In this paper I try to show that, rather than producing a rupture, the emerging poetics of the 1960’s consolidates a tradition of modernity in its more radical aspect, whereas the next poetics prefers to realign with the most remote tradition of modernity, in Baudelaire’s sense, Even though we face two different kinds of dialogue with the tradition, in both cases, it seems, the tradition is retrieved in such a way that the notion of rupture is out of the question En face de la revalorisation accentuée de la textualité dans les poétiques de la décennie 1960 au Portugal – perspective qui, avec certaines particularités, se constate aussi dans le contexte fran ais et espagnol –, la démarcation des poètes émergents dans la décade suivante est, parfois, fortement réactive.
