Moonlight and blood-feeding behaviour of Lutzomyia intermedia and Lutzomyia whitmani (Diptera:Psychodidae:Phlebotominae), vectors of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in Brazil

Abstract: lutzomyia intermedia (lutz & neiva, 1912) and l. whitmani (antunes & coutinho, 1939) (diptera: psychodidae: phlebotominae), two important vectors of american cutaneous leishmaniasis in brazil, occur in sympatry in the locality of posse county, petrópolis municipality, state of rio de janeiro, brazil. we investigated the influence of the lunar cycle on the frequency of specimens of the two species caught while attempting to bite the collectors and in cdc light traps. analysis of the numbers of sand flies captured in different lunar phases for two consecutive years in the peridomestic site and forest shows that there is a significant positive correlation between moonlight intensity and the numbers of l. intermedia and l. whitmani females collected while blood-feeding, whereas the opposite was observed for the cdc traps.
The lunar cycle and seizures in children

Abstract: Aim To analyze the annual trend of hospitalization and potential influence of the lunar cycle of children treated for seizures.Methods The data of the patients treated for seizures (convulsions, epileptic seizures, disturbance of consciousness and epileptic seizures in children with neurodevelopmental disability) in the Pediatrics Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Tuzla were retrospectively analyzed during 2008 in relation to seasonaldistribution, admission time (month, week, admission moment, day in a week, time of the day) and the lunar cycle. Results Out f the totalof 234 treated children, 55 (23,5%) were infants, 101 (43,1%) were under six years of age and 78 (33,3%) were of school age. The most common type of seizures were convulsions, 123 (42,6%). The seizures were numerous in the midst of the week, as opposed to weekends. Thein the midst of the week, as opposed to weekends. The highest number of children was treated in January, February, July and August, that it, in the fourth, seventh, twenty-seventh and thirty-first week of the year. Seizures occured during the day in 149 patients (63,7%) and during the night in 84 (35,9%) patients (p < 0,0034). The number of treated patients was significantly larger in the third and fourthlunar phases (p < 0,018). Conclusion The results suggested seasonal and weekly trends of hospitalization of patients with seizures and their relation with circadian and lunar cycles. There is a need for further prospective studies in order to get better understanding of the influence of the lunar cycle on health.

Abstract: This article combed the domestic and foreign researches on inventory investment since 1990. We find that researches mainly focus on the macro level of the relationship between inventory investment and business cycle, the effects of inflation or interest rates on inventory adjustment. While in the micro enterprise level, they study the determiners of inventory investment, including financing constraints, size and location. Besides, the role of inventory investment behavior on corporate performance has not yet reached a consensus. Based on the analysis of the existing literatures, we put forward the possible directions for future research in the field of inventory in-vestment, combining with China’s specific conditions.

Abstract: Objectives: Popular opinion holds that the phase of the moon influences human behavior, and several reports substantiate this claim; however, reports of correlation between the lunar cycle and cardiac events remain controversial. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether a relationship exists between lunar cycle and the occurrence of acute cardiac events. Methods: A retrospective review of cardiac events, including ST-elevated myocardial in-farction (STEMI), non-ST elevated myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), and unstable angina, over a 5- year period was performed. The dates of cardiac events were recorded and merged with the four phases of the lunar cycle (new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter). Results: A total of 4751 cardiac events (578 STEMI, 1446 NSTEMI, 2727 unstable angina) occurred during the 5-year study period in 3935 unique patients. Cardiac events occurred equivalently during various phases of the lunar cycle. Conclusions: Despite popular opinion, our evidence suggests that the lunar cycle has no effect on the occurrence of acute coronary syndromes.

Abstract: this work was carried out in two small fishing communities, barra de mamanguape and tramataia, northeastern brazil. the aim was to study these traditional fishermen's knowledge and perception about tide and wind classifications, as well as their fishing strategies and techniques. our research methodology involved various techniques: free interviews and semi-structured ones, guided tours and direct observations. the results obtained show the fishermen's classification of the tides according to the phases of the moon: 'breaking tide', 'flushing tide', 'dead tide' and 'big tide' designated technically these last as neap tide and spring tide, respectively. wind is also an essential factor for the fishermen to make successful catches, and they classify it according to direction: north, south, east, southeast, southwest, northeast and northwest. the data show that fishermen's knowledge can also be useful in devising plans for management and conservation studies for this estuary.
The Gravitation of the Moon Plays Pivotal Roles in the Occurrence of the Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a social burden. However, being able to predict AMI could lead to prevention. A previous study showed only the relation between the lunar phase and the occurrence of AMI, but the period it takes for the moon to orbit around the earth and the period of the lunar phase differ. This study investigated the effect of the gravitation of the moon on AMI. Data was comprised of 1369 consecutive patients with first AMI at 5 hospitals from October, 1984 to December, 1997. The universal gravitation of the moon was calculated and compared to the earth onset time of AMI. Universal gravitation of the moon was derived by G*m/d2 (G: universal gravitation constant, m: the mass of the moon, d: the distance between the center of the moon and the center of the earth). The relationship between m/d2 and the cases of AMI was determined. There was an increase in cases, when there is a distance of more than 399864 km from the center of the earth to the center of the moon. The gravitation of more than 399864 km was determined to be weaker gravitation. It is confirmed that the number of AMI patients significantly increases at weaker gravitation periods in this multicenter trial. In conclusion, these results suggest that the gravitation of the moon may have an influence on the occurrence of AMI.

Abstract: The author asks the question concerning the nature and identity of the ritual year. Other supplementary questions that can be asked are whether it is actually possible to locate an underlying coherence at all and, if so, what historical and geographical contexts would embrace it most fully. The author also inquires why there is no recognised current theory about the ritual year. In her approach she emphasises analogical thinking and takes the human life cycle as a key to the understanding of the patterning of the year. In the analysis, four levels are considered: whole eras or time itself at the large scale and with seconds or less at the small scale are dealt with, and the basic series of analogies has the human life cycle as the largest in scale and works down through the year and the month to the 24-hour day as the smallest. Thus, a reference set is established in which two tasks have to be considered: the first is to become familiar with the patterning of examples of the overall cyclical sequence, and the second is to categorise the divisions the cycle. The author has developed Tolstoy’s observation concerning “the isomorphism of the periods after midnight in the diurnal circle and after Christmas in the year circle” and also the idea that Dumézil’s triad of functions of physical force, prosperity and the sacred relates more fundamentally to the life stages of young men, mature men and old men than to the social groups he mentions of warriors, cultivators and priests.

Abstract: Este estudo avaliou as características reprodutivas de uma popula o do ouri o do mar Lytechinus variegatus e a influência do ciclo lunar na libera o de gametas. Foram realizadas oito coletas para avalia o do índice gonadossomático (IG) e dos parametros populacionais relacionados com a reprodu o. Para avalia o do efeito da Lua na libera o de gametas foram realizadas coletas em três ciclos lunares completos. Ao todo foram coletados 295 indivíduos, sendo 156 machos e 131 fêmeas (propor o 1,19:1), porém n o houve diferen a significativa na propor o sexual da popula o. O peso dos machos foisignificativamente maior que o das fêmeas, porém n o houve diferen a significativa no IG, peso gonadal e diametro entre os sexos. Com a amplitude no diametro dos animais coletados (5,5-8,7 cm) foram estabelecidas cinco classes de tamanho. N o houve diferen assignificativas no IG entre as classes de tamanho. Houve efeito da periodicidade lunar na libera o de gametas, com menor IG na lua nova, indicando que esta ocorre no primeiro quarto lunar e em marés de sizígia. This work evaluated the spawning of sea urchin Lytechinus variegates based on lunar cycle and population characteristics. Eight monthly collections were realized to estimate the gonadosomatic index (GI) and population parameters regarding reproduction. To evaluate the effect of the lunar cycle on spawning, samples were taken for each moon phase of three lunar cycles. In the entire work 295 individuals were collected, 156 males and 131 females (1.19:1 ratio). However, there was no significant difference in the sex ratio of the population. The weight of males was significantly greater than that of females. There were no differences between males and females in gonadosomatic index (GI), gonad weight and diameter. There was aneffect of the lunar periodicity on spawning, with lower GI in new moon, indicating that spawning occurs on the first lunar quarter in spring tide.
Influencia del ciclo lunar en la captura de langosta espinosa Panulirus argus (Decapoda: Palinuridae) en el Golfo de Batabanó, Cuba

Abstract: influence of lunar cycle on catches of spiny lobster panulirus argus (decapoda: palinuridae) in the gulf of batabanó, cuba. many biological processes such as reproductive and migratory behaviours have been associated with moon cycles. in this study, the nocturnal light levels associated with lunar cycle (int) were correlated with daily catch rate of lobster p. argus, during seven lunar months of 2002 fishing period, to determine a possible relationship between these variables. the lobster catches were obtained from three fishing companies that develop their activities in the gulf of batabanó: epicol that fishes in coloma area; pescahabana in batabanó area and pescaisla in isla area. daily catch per boat (cdb) was used as a measurement of daily catch variations (catch rate). the correlation was analyzed showing it in chronological graphs based on average of cdb per lunar phases, comparing lobster catch rate per lunar phases -with the kruskal-wallis test-. spearman rank correlation coefficient and cross correlation techniques were also applied. similarities between lobster catch rate and the lunar cycle were not found. spearman rank correlation coefficient was modularly smaller than 0.1 in all cases and demonstrated quantitatively that correlation between cdb and int does not exist. kruskal-wallis test detected differences only in batabanó area but not when making the analyses for the whole gulf of batabanó. finally, the cross correlations do not detected significance in any zone, as well. it is concluded that, in opposition to what other authors have reported, the catch rates of p. argus and the lunar cycle did not show significant correlation in the gulf of batabanó. this trend was independent of the fishing art, which varied according to the time of the year that was analyzed. rev. biol. trop. 59 (1): 207-216. epub 2011 march 01.
