Sampaio, Armando Vaz;
Nova Economia , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512012000100003
Abstract: to better understand transitions that took place in the labor market, it is important to consider the flows of being employed, unemployed and outside the labor market, and the probabilities involved, as a function of socio-economic and geographical variables. the econometric model used was the multinomial logit model, which found that there is a gender difference in regards to being employed and outside the labor market. for the first instance, the probability is greater for men, and for the second situation, it is lower. a positive and decreasing relationship was also found between age and the probability of being employed, and a negative and decreasing relationship between age and the probability of being outside the labor market. with regards to education level, a positive relationship was found with the probability of being employed. when comparing 1995 and 2005, the probability of being unemployed in 2005 was found to be higher.

Lecturas de Economía , 2010,
Abstract: this paper provides a systematic review of the scientific literature on fertility and its relationship with economics. we explore theoretical and empirical frameworks developed in the last fifty years, emphasizing on the classical (becker, easterling) and unorthodox approaches (bongaarts, iannaccone, lehrer). this literature review focused on journals of economics, sociology and demography indexed in the journal storage database (jstor), elsevier's research database (sciencedirect), elton b. stephens company research database (ebscohost) and cambridge information group's research database (proquest). this review suggests that research of household behavior regarding decisions to participate in the labor market and fertility is a vast field of convergence of various multidisciplinary analytical attempts. accordingly, economics has focused on this field through a multidisciplinary approach.

Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982006000200003
Abstract: this article is based on two different sets of data. on the one hand, there are the changes in the labor market that have taken place as of the 1990s, which redefined the pattern of absorption of the labor force. on the other hand are the related changes in family arrangements regarding the work of their members, as well as changes in the role of women in the family and in society. the focus here is the character of the profiles of participation of wives and female heads of families who are providers or co-providers in their nuclear families. there has been increasing growth of the importance of the participation of these woman in the labor market, under unstable labor relationships and unemployment. at the same time, they have been taking on more significant roles in the composition of family income. although they often hold down unstable jobs, in comparison with other members of their families, only wives and female heads of families showed increased participation and occupation between 1990 and 2003. especially important is the segment of working wives, half of whom under unstable or informal labor relationships, who show less reduction in the proportion of non-unstable relationships during this period. the occupational profiles of members of the family groups in which these women participate are analyzed, and the families of wives and female heads of families who work and do not work were compared. the contribution of these women to the incomes of their nuclear families has softened the fall in income of their households and clearly attenuated the increasing impoverishment in the s?o paulo metropolitan region.

Ramos, Lauro;Aguas, Marina Ferreira Fortes;Furtado, Luana Moreira de Souza;
Economia Aplicada , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-80502011000400004
Abstract: this study has analyzed the participation of married women in brazilian metropolitan labor force. specifically, we tried to show that the family environment in which the woman is has influence on their decision to join the workforce and affects the relative importance of traditional determinants. the evidence raised indicates that handicapped families have a higher probability to have women in the workforce, but the gap is substantially reduced, and even reversed, if they have children of preschool age. thus the implementation of public policies that make it easier for these women to join the labor force, such as access to childcare, will prove useful to help to rescue their families from poverty.

Pérez, Elisenda Rentería;Wajnman, Simone;Oliveira, Ana Maria Hermeto Camilo de;
Revista Brasileira de Estudos de Popula??o , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-30982006000200005
Abstract: the aim of this article is to analyze the determinants of the probability of being in the labor force and the number of working hours per week of persons over the age of 60 in the city of s?o paulo, brazil, in 2000. the study pays special attention to the influence of the health of elderly persons on their participation in the labor force. the dataset used in this study is the sabe, a survey on health, well-being, and aging in latin america and the caribbean, with funding from the pan american health organization. to control the bias of endogeneity resulting from the relationship between a person's state of health and his or her participation on the labor market, the instrumental variable method is used. various measures of health were used in order to analyze different effects of the condition of the health of elderly persons in the labor supply. the results indicate that, among men, variables representing economic status carry considerable weight in explaining their participation in the labor supply. among women, variables more closely related to family composition are important in explaining the results of the estimations. having poor health means less probability of being active and of working a greater number of hours per week. among men, the results of the models related to health conditions estimated by instruments suggest that the effect of participating in the labor force for the elderly could be negative to their health. this may be because of possible truly negative affects on health, or because the working elderly have better schooling and better economic status. this means that they use health services more frequently and are able to describe their health problems more clearly.

Sousa, Salviana de Maria Pastor Santos;
Revista Katálysis , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1414-49802007000200014
Abstract: this article reflects on the national worker training plan (planfor), implemented during the administration of president fernando henrique cardoso. planfor was planned to be a tool to reverse socially consolidated imbalances while also attempting to adapt the country to new challenges introduced by capitalist restructuring. the decentralized and participatory management would be a basic tool in this process, given that it should involve the three levels of government and those interested in the process. the analysis focuses on the management of this policy and is based on the results of an evaluative study undertaken from 1996 - 2002, by researchers in the group for the evaluation and study of poverty and policies aimed at poverty (gaepp) of the federal university at maranh?o. based on this analysis, it sought to demonstrate that the formulators of planfor did not propose any paradigmatic change, in order to construct democratic management with effective social participation.
