Maria Tendaj , Barbara Mysiak
Folia Horticulturae , 2011, DOI: 10.2478/v10245-011-0001-x
Abstract: The characteristic growth features of four Welsh onion cultivars (‘Parade’, ‘Performer’, ‘Siedmiolatka Zielona’, and ‘Siedmiolatka Czerwona’) dependant on growing method (seeds sown directly in the field and from transplants) were evaluated during the three-year study (2007-2009). The following traits were determined: plant height, number of leaves on a single plant, tendency to produce laterals, plant weight, as well as length and diameter of the pseudostem. Plants of the ‘Parade’ cultivar were the highest (76.0 cm, on average), while those of ‘Siedmiolatka Czerwona’ were the shortest (mean 68.6 cm). Pseudostem length was found to be the main factor determining the height of the Welsh onion. The longest pseudostems were observed for the ‘Parade’ and ‘Performer’ cultivars, while the ‘Siedmiolatka Czerwona’ had the shortest. In each of the tested cultivars, those grown from a transplant resulted in larger pseudostems and a larger number of leaves. Amongst the studied cultivars, ‘Siedmiolatka Czerwona’ had the most numerous leaves and laterals (45.2 leaves and 14.3 laterals, on average), while ‘Performer’ and ‘Parade’ had the least (mean 11.7 and 14.8 leaves and 2.4 and 2.6 laterals, respectively). The weight of a single plant with laterals significantly differed depending on the cultivar and growing method. At the end of the vegetation period (mid-October), the ‘Parade’ and ‘Performer’ cultivars grown from transplants were characterised by the highest weights (mean 518.2 g and 631.7 g), while ‘Siedmiolatka Czerwona’ and ‘Siedmiolatka Zielona’ grown from seeds had the lowest (222 g, on average).

Forest Research Papers , 2009, DOI: 10.2478/v10111-009-0022-1
Abstract: The experiment was established in 1995 in the territory of the Milicz Forest District in completely randomised block design, in five replications. 20 seedlings were planted on experimental plots at the spacing 1.5×1.5 m. 78 pedunculate oak and sessile oak populations were used in the experiment. The provenances were evaluated in 2007 for height growth during a 5-year period, survival, diameter at breast height and basal area. The contrast Q. robur contra Q. petraea was employed in the analysis of variance. The growth traits were correlated with the geographical location of mother stands. Nearly all these parameters except for survival accounted for the differences between species and populations. The intraspecific variation was very high which indicated a possibility of selection. The variability of pedunculate oak with regard to the analysed traits appeared to be higher than in the sessile oak. The ranges of traits of sessile oak fall entirely within the range of traits of pedunculate oak. The mean values of growth traits in sessile oak populations were lower in comparison with the populations of pedunculate oak. In the conditions of the experimental site, the differences in growth traits between the pedunculate oak and sessile oak were maintained at least to the age of 14. A correlation was found between the traits of pedunculate oak and geographical location of mother stands. The growth traits of populations from southern and western regions of Poland showed higher values. Such correlations were not detected in sessile oak.

Aquaculture, Aquarium, Conservation & Legislation , 2013,
Abstract: Due to diversification of salmonid species which are farmed in Romania, the aim of this studywas been to determine the production performances of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), Palominovariety, compared with the clasical variety – Irideus. Analyzing the body weight of both varieties at theend of experiment, was recorded a very significant differences (d=16.11 g; p<0.001) in favor of theirideus Variety. Also, very significant differences was recorded regarding other morphological characters(Tl-d=0.93 cm, p<0.001; Sl-d=0.88 cm, p<0.001; Cl-d=1.07 cm, p<0.001), favorable for Irideusvariety. Growth indices showed also favorable values for Irideus variety (TG:d=16.05 g, p<0.001;ADG:d=0.041 g, p<0.05). Regarding the body form indices, the differences between the two varietieswere generally insignificant, except Fullton Condition Factor (K:d=0.06; p<0.001), this presentingfavorable values for Palomino variety, respectively Meat indices 2 (Mi2:d=0.44; p<0.05), being favorablefor Irideus variety.

Materials Research , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-14392012005000072
Abstract: the crack propagation behavior in a 2024 t351 aluminum alloy under constant amplitude loading has been studied. this study is complemented by quantitative microfractographic observations and energetic analysis. the obtained results under constant amplitude fatigue tests show that different crack propagation stages can be identified and correlated with the evolution of the characteristic features. in another hand, the energetic analysis shows that there is a discontinuous crack growth at low growth rates as against a cycle by cycle growth mechanism at high growth rates.

Pakistan Journal of Biological Sciences , 2011,
Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of membranous epidermal growth factor receptor in colorectal adenocarcinoma and its correlation with clinicopathological features. Fifty formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded archival specimens of colorectal cancer were included randomly as cases. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to assess EGFR expression. The results were correlated with the clinicopathological features of colorectal tumor tissues. More than 1% of membranous EGFR expression was found in 24 (48%) of cancer specimens. The immunoreactions intensity was classified as weak, moderate and strong representing 2, 22 and 24%, respectively. According to multivariate analysis, EGFR expression was not significantly associated with age, sex, tumor site, stage, grade and type of tumor in cases. These results suggest that the assessment of EGFR expression in colorectal cancer by conventional immunohistochemistry has not proven its predictive value and can not be useful to predict about outcome of patients.

Vulvar dystrophies: A long-term Brisbane study of 155 cases  [PDF]
Ian S. C. Jones, Alister Jones
Open Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OJOG) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojog.2012.23042
Abstract: Objective: To review the long-term outcomes for 155 women with a vulvar dystrophy (VD) who attended the Royal Brisbane Hospital Vulvar Clinic between 1976 and 1988. Methods: VD data from Vulvar Diseases Clinic were reviewed and analysed using the computer software Statistical package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) 11.0. Results: Of 155 patients 94 had Lichen Sclerosus (LS), 41 Lichen Simplex Chronicus (LSC) and 20 Mixed Dystrophy (MD). Three patients developed squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva between 10 and 26 years after presentation with a VD. To date only one of these three patients remains alive following treatment. Conclusion: The need for long term follow up is stressed and any of the three types of VD may become malignant. Time from diagnosis to malignant change is not predictive. VD treatments seem to go through phases with the application of potent steroid creams having stood the test of time.

Journal of Biomedical Science and Engineering (JBiSE) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/jbise.2013.611128
Abstract: Optical microscopy is commonly used for cancer cell detection. Focusing on carcinoma cell identification via optical microscopy, a proof-of-concept study was performed at Laboratory of Design, Optimization and Modeling (LCOMS) to determine the grade of cancer cells. This paper focuses on three types of abnormal cells; namely, Benign Hyperplasia (BH), Intraepithelial Neoplasia (IN), which is a precursor state for cancer, and Carcinoma (Ca), which corresponds to abnormal tissue proliferation cancer. These types of cells were used to assess the efficiency of using shape features to identify carcinoma cells. A comparative study based on performance indicator concludes that three features, Area, Xor-Convex, and Solidity, were found to be effective in identifying the Carcinoma grade of cancer cells.

Journal of Power and Energy Engineering (JPEE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jpee.2014.29025
Abstract:

During the transient period of large-disturbance of the received power grid, the power features of the inverter are of great important for the security and stability of the system. The research before is defective in that the constant control mode assumption and the rough HVDC simulation model. The paper establishes the PSCAD/EMTDC model for Yun-Guang EHVDC system, and analysis the transient real power and the reactive power of the inverter. With the analysis of logic for control mode, the author also introduces the physical processes of the peak of the reactive power. At last, the paper puts forward several strategies for suppressing the peak of the dynamic reactive power and real power recovery acceleration.
