Irène Jami
Genre & Histoire , 2007,

Biasi-Rodrigues, Bernardete;Bezerra, Benedito Gomes;
Linguagem em (Dis)curso , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1518-76322012000100011
Abstract: based on the genre theory known as the british school, or the socio-rhetorical approach, this paper aims to discuss the concept of communicative purpose, viewed as an important criterion for genre study. the discussion focuses on the definition of communicative purpose as presented by swales (1990) and later reviewed by askehave and swales (2001) and swales (2004), who discusses the use of purpose not as a criterion for the immediate identification of genre, but, according to an analysis grounded on the social settings, as a resulting discovery of the process of analysis itself. viewing communicative purpose this way, one seeks to establish safe procedures for the recognition of the status of a genre at the end of the research, while maintaining the relevance of the concept as a criterion of analysis.
A Contrastive Study of Master Thesis Acknowledgements by Taiwanese and North American Students  [PDF]
Stephanie W. Cheng
Open Journal of Modern Linguistics (OJML) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojml.2012.21002
Abstract: Thesis acknowledgements are a written part genre in which graduate students express their gratitude towards a number of addressees upon completion of theses. Previous studies on thesis acknowledgements have focused on the expressions of gratitude or their generic structure. However, socio-cultural values and norms can shape the ways people express thanks and influence the rhetorical structure of a genre like thesis acknowledgements. The present study compares and contrasts the use of thanking strategies in 60 thesis acknowledgements written in English by Taiwanese and North American master students. Results show that Taiwanese students (TS) use more thanking strategies than North American students (NAS); specifically, they employ more explicit thanking strategies but less implicit thanking strategies than NAS. They also use more complex thanking strategies but less simple thanking strategies than NAS. Interestingly, the two groups vary in the arrangement of addressees and the choice of strategies for various addressees, reflecting different cultural perceptions of expressing gratitude. For example, NAS appear to make a more flexible arrangement of advisors and family members than TS. These subtle differences between TS and NAS thesis acknowledgements reveal Taiwanese and North American students’ embedded socio-pragmatic perceptions of writing this genre.

Parodi,Giovanni;
Estudios filológicos , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0071-17132009000100008
Abstract: the elusive concepts underlying the term genre offer different alternative conceptions. this may confuse the novice, but also the expert. this article addressed a discussion on the contemporary conceptions of discourse genre. also, a particular cognitive perspective was focused, but with special emphasis on findings from empirical data. the research was based on the description of the largest available on-line corpus (59 million words) of written specialized spanish texts on four disciplines: psychology, social work, industrial chemistry, and construction engineering. the corpus was collected in one chilean university and in the corresponding professional backgrounds, and it showed that the access to disciplinary knowledge is build upon, on the one hand, a varying repertoire of nine written academic genres, and on the other, a richer group of twenty eight professional genres. interesting variations between the four disciplines under study were identified. psycholinguistic and educational implications were advanced in relation to knowledge acquisition, discourse genres and reading comprehension.
Gêneros acadêmicos em cursos de especializa??o: conjunto ou col?nia de gêneros?
Bezerra, Benedito Gomes;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982012000300002
Abstract: this work investigates the interrelationship among the academic genres produced/read by students in a graduate course in portuguese language, seeking to determine to what extent the concepts of genre sets and genre colonies can be consistently applied to describe these genres as a whole. the methodology included, in addition to a questionnaire administered to students, the analysis of a representative corpus of the academic genres most often read/produced by the students, including research articles, summaries, book reviews, research projects and final papers. the results indicate points of intersection as well as differences between the concepts, when applied to the genres under study, which suggests that they can be used alone or complementarily, depending on the aims that are proposed for the analysis.
Estereotipos de género ponen en peligro la salud sexual en la adolescencia.
Esther Caricote
Salus Online , 2006,
Abstract: It is important to analyze an individual’s biological articulation (sex) with the social context, and not to try to deny the biological differences existing between men and women. Also, investigators have to recognize that genre is what marks the main difference between both sexes. Genre refers to a group of social expectations, rules, beliefs, values and customs related to the female and male sexual roles that are held by a given culture. Currently, a lot is being said about genre stereotypes, from which investigators try to explain and comprehend “some” of the most important personal and social problems of female and male adolescents, such as sexual health and education. For this reason, the concept of genre implies both an exit point and an arrival point: An exit point because genre differences imply multiple forms of inequality and inequity in the relationship between men and women. It is also an arrival point because it leads us to a fairer society in which equality and equity of rights for men and women is guaranteed
Popular television genres as a reflection of contemporary society
Helena Popovi?
Holon , 2012,
Abstract: This paper analyses genre and the way genre categories are constructed, with a special focus on television genres and their peculiarities. A comparison is made between Raymond Williams’s television genre classification from 1973 and Creebers’ and others classification from 2008. The comparison reflects the apparent transformation of the role of television: from a medium supposed to serve the purpose of information and education to a medium dominated by entertainment. Contemporary television is characterized by a proliferation of entertainment genres such as soap opera, situation comedy, quiz show, talk show and reality television, each of which carries specific ideological implications. The main focus is placed on the ordinary and everyday life, the personal, emotional and intimate. In addition, individualism and competitiveness are promoted, while fame is promoted as the ultimate success of the individual. The fundamental values implied are populism and anti-elitism; the unequal distribution of power is legitimized through individualism and personal success - defined as material wealth and fame.
