Informal Online Learning Practices: Implications for Distance Education
Fawn Winterwood
Turkish Online Journal of Qualitative Inquiry , 2010,
Abstract: This qualitative ethnographic study examines five American teenagers’ historical and current digitally-mediated multiliteracy practices within digital popular culture. The participants included three male and two female students of a private high school in the Midwestern United States. The study is framed by the notion that literacy is a socially, culturally, and historically situated discursive construct rather than a purely individualized cognitive endeavor. This social constructivist theory of literacy emphasizes the social conditions necessary to navigate the economic, social, and political worlds of the 21st century. The purpose of the study was to explore the students’ multiliteracy practices that they enact through their activities within digital popular culture. Data collection methods included synchronous interviews facilitated by video conferencing tools as well as observation of the participants’ online activities and member checks conducted via email and instant messaging. The analytic strategy employed during this study was informed by Clarke’s (2005) situational analysis method. The study’s findings indicate that literacy practices in which the study participants have engaged through informal learning activities within digital youth culture have had a much greater impact on enabling them to cultivate the multimodal literacies necessary within a postmodern digital era than have their formal educational experiences.
De la crisis del mercado discográfico a las nuevas prácticas de escucha Technologies and Media in Digital Music: From Music Market Crisis to New Listening Practices
Héctor Fouce Rodríguez
Comunicar , 2010, DOI: 10.3916/c34-2010-02-06
In the last decade, the music industry has become the paradigm of the transformations that has carried the development of the productive system towards Informational Capitalism. Of the hand of a quick technological innovation, not always produced by companies, new forms of production and consumption of music have been developed. This new environment has dragged the phonographic companies to a crisis of sales that has forced a radical transformation for the sake of survival. One of these business transformations has been the intensification of the management of copyright. This intensification occurs mainly in two areas: the extension of the protection deadlines and the expansion of the fields and rights management companies-driven activities. This article is intended to answer the question that lies behind the ambitions to modify the productive system: how create cultural industries capable, at the time, to maintain a common and democratic culture and also to develop initiatives to generate capital gains to musicians, songwriters, and other music professionals. We will use data from a research that have conducted three group interviews segmented by

Abstract: t can be said that discourses developed based on the concept of “culture” that has multiple definitions have been reshaped by the conditions resulting from postmodernism and globalization. In order to define the conceptual problem of culture, it is essential that we recognize/define such elements as belief, knowledge, stance and intuition that communities transfer from one generation to another in the historical process as well. Nowadays, due to globalization, no culture and human society in the world thoroughly and indifferently lives in a homogeneous integrity of a single culture. An advantage of postmodernism is that even minor cultural structures in which people are involved have gained importance. In this context, almost everything has begun to be perceived as culture. The differentiation of existent concepts of culture and cultural change in the broadest sense is a constant factor of human civilization and it occurs anywhere and at any time. The only constant rules/principles of life and cultures have been the concepts of change and continuity. The concept of Kitsch has a complex structure in terms of scope and content. It is not easy to assign only one meaning to Kitsch as a concept or to find an exact equivalent of it. When we just examine the literal meaning of this word, it can be said that it is used as an adjective meaning vain, of vulgar taste, banal and boring used for productions or it is used to classify art which is seen as an inferior copy of existent things.Other concepts that come with the concept of Kitsch are cultural degeneration, upper class tastes, lower-class tastes, the concepts of superior culture and sub-culture. In this context, “kitsch” means more than solely its artistic use, it has got other more meanings in other concepts.

Pinochet Cobos,Carla;

Abstract: violeta parra's artistic work presents on different levels the complex problem of unraveling the social schemes of the first half of the twentieth century. this article examines the ways in which this "folclorista" moved through the gender schemes corresponding to men and women of that epoch. this movement opened a space for a both critical and irreverent view in which cultural tradition and innovation converge, both regarding the contents other texts as well as the expression of their musicality.
ADVENT OF POPULAR IN GUJARATI FICTIONS: ITS LITERARY HISTORY AND POLITICS
SAHDEV LUHAR
Golden Research Thoughts , 2012, DOI: 10.9780/22315063
Abstract: Gujarat has turned out to be the centre for varied interpretations in the last decade, particularly because of two-fold reasons: firstly, the communal riots of 2002 and secondly, the economical move that Gujarat has made. The idea of Gujarat varies time to time – from the motherland of Gandhi to the platform of Modian politics. This shift has occurred due to various reasons; the foremost being among them is advent of popular. The invasion of popular in Gujarat has deeply affected the realm of culture, politics and literature. The paper discovers the seeds of popular in Gujarat, its steady rise, impulses behind its growth and its effects on socio-cultural life of Gujaraties. The years after the formation of Gujarat formed the childhood of popular and the post-2002 period is its youth. Popular in Gujarat is in its full bloom today, hence the paper tries to prepare a brief historiography of popular in Gujarat mainly focusing on literary domain. Thus, the paper pithily surveys the significant trends in history of popular fiction writing from beginning to present day and its struggle with the main stream or canonical Gujarati literature.
