Gluteus maximus and semitendinosus activation during active prone hip extension exercises

Abstract: background: gluteus maximus strengthening exercises are employed in clinical practice as options for the treatment of low back and sacroiliac disorders. however, no studies were found that investigated which were the best exercises to activate this muscle and justify its employment in physical therapy practice. objective: to quantify the electromyographic (emg) activity of the gluteus maximus and semitendinosus muscles during four modalities of therapeutic exercises. methods: thirty-one participants (16 men, 15 women) were selected. the emg activities of the gluteus maximus and semitendinosus was recorded and quantified while the participants performed four modalities of therapeutic exercises, involving active prone hip extension in four positions: knee extension (ke), knee flexion (kf), lateral hip rotation and knee extension (lhrke), and lateral hip rotation and knee flexion (lhr-kf). results: repeated-measures anovas showed that the addition of kf or lhr increased gluteus maximus activity, whereas, ke decreased the activation of this muscle. in contrast, the exercises performed with ke increased semitendinosus activity. conclusions: exercises performed with kf or lhr, or a combination of the two, may be effective choices for gluteus maximus strengthening, however both kf and lhr decreased semitendinosus activity. the exercises performed with ke appeared to be an acceptable choice for semitendinosus activation.

OBJETIVO: Quantificar a atividade eletromiográgica (EMG) dos músculos glúteo máximo e semitendinoso durante quatro modalidades de exercícios terapêuticos. MéTODOS: Trinta e um participantes (16 homens, 15 mulheres) foram selecionados. A atividade EMG do glúteo máximo e semitendinoso foi registrada e quantificada enquanto os indivíduos realizaram quatro modalidades de exercícios terapêuticos envolvendo extens o ativa do quadril em prono em quatro posi es: joelho em extens o, joelho em flex o, rota o lateral do quadril e extens o do joelho e rota o lateral do quadril e flex o do joelho. Abstract: The great agricultural development in the Brazilian savannah brought with it the reduction of its natural vegetation, which has been quickly lost, especially due to extractive exploitation by man. Murici (Byrsonima verbascifolia Rich) is a fruit bearing plant of great medicinal importance in the savannah; however, its propagation is hindered by the fact that the seeds have low germination and seedling emergence in the field is slow. This study evaluated the effect of different dormancy breakage methods in murici seeds. Therefore, were evaluated effect of different temperatures; soaking in gibberellic acid and water; chemical and mechanical scarification and two types of substrate (distilled water and KNO3). Treatments were arranged in a randomized block design. Records made daily on the number of germinated seeds were used to determine the germination percentage and germination speed index. Among the methods evaluated, giberellic acid at 2,309.46 ?M gave the greatest seed germination percentage, especially when the germination paper was moistened with KNO3. O grande desenvolvimento agrícola na regi o do Cerrado foi acompanhado pela redu o da vegeta o atual e essa rica forma o vegetal vem sofrendo uma rápida depreda o, principalmente devido à explora o extrativista por parte do homem. O murici (Byrsonima verbascifolia Rich) destaca-se por ser uma planta de grande importancia medicinal e frutífera do cerrado, entretanto, sua propaga o é dificultada pelo fato de suas sementes terem baixa taxa de germina o e a emergência das plantulas em campo serem lentas. Objetivou-se com este trabalho avaliar o efeito de diferentes métodos de supera o de dormência em sementes de murici. Para tanto, foram avaliados o efeito de diferentes temperaturas; imers o em ácido giberélico; imers o em água e escarifica o química e mecanica do endocarpo e dois tipos de substrato umedecidos (água destilada e KNO3), dispostos em delineamento de blocos ao acaso. Foram realizadas contagens diárias para determinar a porcentagem de germina o e índice de velocidade de germina o. Entre os diversos métodos avaliados, o ácido giberélico a 2.309,46?M proporcionou maior porcentagem de germina o das sementes, sobretudo quando o papel de germina o foi umedecido com KNO3.

Abstract: cervical uterine cancer is the second most common malignancy affecting women worldwide. papanicolaou smear is a simple screening test that can detect the disease at an early and curable stage. although indicated to every adult woman, pap smear screening covers less than 70% of brazilian women. this study aimed to evaluate if private health care insurance coverage was associated with papanicolaou smear screening. we analyzed data from 6,299 women aged 35 years or older, resident in rio de janeiro state, who had been interviewed in the national household sample survey (pnad) in 2003. in order to minimize the occurrence of biases, we utilized the propensity score matching method, considering all information from sample design in the scores estimation (sample weights, strata and primary sampling units). a sub-sample of 2,348 women was then obtained, with socioeconomic and biological covariates equally distributed between the groups with and without private health insurance coverage (1,174 pairs). logistic regression model was then used and the results showed that the chance of papanicolaou smear screening is 26.1% higher (or=1.261; p=0,096; ci 95%= [0.96;1.66]) for women with health insurance coverage when compared to women without health insurance coverage at 10% of significance. the results indicate the need of extending periodic cervical cancer screening for all women, reducing the inequalities still present nowadays.
PERCEP O DO EGRESSO DE ENFERMAGEM SOBRE A CONTRIBUI O DO CURSO PARA O EXERCíCIO DO CUIDADO

Abstract: El estudio objetivó evaluar los resultados de la formación en enfermería anclada en la problematización y en el aprendizaje basado en problemas desde la percepción de los propios egresados. Estudio transversal y de naturaleza ex-post-facto. Los resultados fueron analizados en por la triangulación de métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos y la perspectiva hermenéutica dialéctica. En el abordaje cuantitativo 180 egresados respondieron un cuestionario. En el cualitativo, 14 participaron de entrevistas, relatando sus pensamientos relacionados al cuidado ideal, para la construcción de indicadores que revelasen la lógica de la evaluación. Esos indicaron nortearon las cuestiones para la triangulación. Los resultados mostraron: 85,1% de los graduados están en el mercado laboral, 92,1% asistieron al posgrado y 99,1% creen presentar una formación necesaria al cuidado ético, humanizado y fundamentado. Los datos resaltan una formación comprometida con la construcción de autonomía y conocimiento y articulada a los principios del Sistema único de Salud y del mundo laboral en enfermería.
Sesbania virgata stimulates the occurrence of its microsymbiont in soils but does not inhibit microsymbionts of other species

Abstract: the legume species sesbania virgata establishes a specific and efficient symbiosis with azorhizobium doebereinerae. previous studies have shown that a. doebereinerae occurrence correlates to the presence of s. virgata. this work aimed to evaluate the occurrence of a. doebereinerae and of other nitrogen-fixing leguminosae-nodulating bacteria (nflnb) in soil samples collected adjacent to and 10 m away from the stems of five s. virgata plants in pasture areas. symbiotic characteristics of isolates from these nflnb populations were also studied. s. virgata and the four promiscuous legume species leucaena leucocephala, macroptilium atropurpureum, phaseolus vulgaris and vigna unguiculata were inoculated with soil samples to trap a. doebereinerae and other nflnb. nflnb capable of inducing nodulation in at least one of these legumes were found in all samples. m. atropurpureum was the most promiscuous species, as it trapped the highest number of nflnb cultural types from soil suspensions. the other species were less promiscuous in the following order: v. unguiculata, p. vulgaris, and l. leucocephala. isolates of the promiscuous legumes were classified into seven cultural groups. one of these groups, isolated from all promiscuous species, showed fast-growth alkali-reaction in culture medium (like azorhizobium); it was identified as cupriavidus. this is the first report of symbiosis of cupriavidus with papilionoideae species. the symbiotic efficiency of promiscuous hosts with nflnb varied, but it was always less than that of controls with mineral nitrogen or an inoculant strain. s. virgata was efficiently nodulated only by a. doebereinerae, which occurred mainly in samples collected close to the plant stem, corroborating a high stimulus by its host species. a high diversity of nflnb occurs as saprophytes close to the s. virgata root system.
Treatment with at Homeopathic Complex Medication Modulates Mononuclear Bone Marrow Cell Differentiation

Abstract: A homeopathic complex medication (HCM), with immunomodulatory properties, is recommended for patients with depressed immune systems. Previous studies demonstrated that the medication induces an increase in leukocyte number. The bone marrow microenvironment is composed of growth factors, stromal cells, an extracellular matrix and progenitor cells that differentiate into mature blood cells. Mice were our biological model used in this research. We now report in vivo immunophenotyping of total bone marrow cells and ex vivo effects of the medication on mononuclear cell differentiation at different times. Cells were examined by light microscopy and cytokine levels were measured in vitro. After in vivo treatment with HCM, a pool of cells from the new marrow microenvironment was analyzed by flow cytometry to detect any trend in cell alteration. The results showed decreases, mainly, in CD11b and TER-119 markers compared with controls. Mononuclear cells were used to analyze the effects of ex vivo HCM treatment and the number of cells showing ring nuclei, niche cells and activated macrophages increased in culture, even in the absence of macrophage colony-stimulating factor. Cytokines favoring stromal cell survival and differentiation in culture were induced in vitro. Thus, we observe that HCM is immunomodulatory, either alone or in association with other products.

Abstract: the influence of various growth regulators and medium concentrations, in different quantities, on the in vitro callus induction of carqueja [baccharis trimera (less.) dc.] was evaluated. it was found that the callus initiation was dependent on both, the growth regulator and medium concentration. the highest callus induction and development were obtained by using 15.0 mm 1-napthaleneacetic acid (naa) as growth regulators and half strength of salts, vitamins, and myo-inositol of murashige and skoog medium. in vitro shoot proliferation was obtained by using thidiazuron.

Abstract: this work presents a characterization of the agriculture of paraná state based on thirty-five variables extracted from agricultural census of 1995/96 and two variables from the map of soil aptitude. these are related to land access, land use, utilization of chemical and mechanical technologies, use of capital assets, labor relationships and tercerization, soil fertility and mechanization suitability. the factor analysis with thirty-seven variables enabled to describe seven main factors, which explained 66.7% of variance. the cluster analysis of the seven factor?s values allowed to classify ten types of municipalities organized in nine regions.

Abstract: We assess the importance of final state interactions in $D^+ \rar K^- \p^+ \p^+$, stressing the consistency between two- and three-body interactions. The basic building block in the calculation is a $K\pi$ amplitude based on unitarized chiral perturbation theory and with parameters determined by a fit to elastic LASS data. Its analytic extension to the second sheet allows the determination of two poles, associated with the $\k$ and the $K^*(1430)$, and a representation of the amplitude based on them is constructed. The problem of unitarity in the three-body system is formulated in terms of an integral equation, inspired in the Faddeev formalism, which implements a convolution between the weak vertex and the final state hadronic interaction. Three different topologies are considered for the former and, subsequently, the decay amplitude is expressed as a perturbation series. Each term in this series is systematically related to the previous one and a re-summation was performed. Remaining effects owing to single and double rescattering processes were then added and results compared to FOCUS data. We found that proper three-body effects are important at threshold and fade away rapidly at higher energies. Our model, based on a vector weak vertex, can describe qualitative features of the modulus of the decay amplitude and agrees well with its phase in the elastic region.
