The Right to Communicate: Past Mistakes and Future Possibilities
Deborah Hicks
Dalhousie Journal of Interdisciplinary Management , 2010, DOI: 10.5931/djim.v3i1.25
Abstract: The right to communicate is a difficult concept to define. The most concise definition is provided by Pomorski (2002): the right to "exchange information relating to a commonly experienced world." This article explores the history and development of the right to communicate as a Third generation human right and the failed past attempts to translate it into national and international policy. In addition, alternative policy paths for advocate of the right to communicate will be explored and suggestions for concrete activities will be made.
Improving High-Tech Product Development through Communication Audits  [PDF]
Mirja Vaananen, Pekka Belt, Janne Harkonen, Matti Mottonen
Technology and Investment (TI) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ti.2012.31004
Abstract: Functional communication is a necessity to succeed in high technology product development where projects typically are multi-site, multi-cultural, multi-technical, and products are complex. The aim of this study is to clarify what kind of process is suitable for assessing the effectiveness of communication in high-tech product development. Based on the literature analysis, a communication audit process is constructed and tested in five product development projects of different information and communication technology (ICT) companies. Based on test case experiences and analyses, this study proposes a streamlined communication audit process. An outcome of this paper is a streamlined communi-cation audit process that provides benefits for companies, but does not burden the organisation unnecessarily. Man-agers of high-tech companies can utilise the developed process for enhancing communication in their product devel-opment.
The Importance of Communication among the Members of the Nursing Team  [PDF]
Lucas Warmling, Patricia Alves de Souza
Creative Education (CE) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2018.96073
Abstract: In 2013, the Brazilian Ministry of Health instituted the National Patient Safety Program (“PNSP”). One of the priorities of the Program is to propose and validate protocols, guides and manuals aimed at patient safety in different areas, one of which is communication concerning the health services environment. The hospital performs actions in tertiary care and the interpersonal communication of the nursing team demands a lot of attention and care, since it is a fundamental instrument in order to help the recovery of the patient. With a basis in this, the present work aims to identify the perceptions regarding the forms of communication of the members of the nursing team, the elements that interfere in this communication and to discuss the importance of the communication process among the nursing teams. This is a qualitative and descriptive research carried out from a questionnaire applied to nursing professionals of a small hospital in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. There is a lack of communication and we noticed that the interaction among the members of the nursing team and the participation of the health institution must be improved in order to achieve a better teamwork. This improvement can be applied not only during the work process, but also through lectures, meetings and fellowship encounters. The communication occurs through an active participation of two or more individuals in the relevant process and such relationship may facilitate the practice of humanization. Communication subsidizes interpersonal relationships that, in turn, interact with nursing art, which is the process of science and care.
Societal Perception of Communication Strategies among Married Couples in Nsukka, South-Eastern, Nigeria  [PDF]
Christian Iyiani, Christopher Ngwu
Sociology Mind (SM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/sm.2012.24053
Abstract: When communication between couples becomes strained or even non-existent, the entire foundation of the relationship is affected. The purpose of this study therefore was to examine communication strategies that will improve couple’s relationships. Data were gathered from 197 couples of Igbo ethnic group using a 20-item scale measuring societal perception of married couples. Results showed that about half of the respondents (51.1%) were able to identify strategies couples can take to reduce misunderstanding in marriage relationship. The study also revealed that 53.2% of the respondents were of the opinion that culture has an influence on effective communication among couples. A major implication of the findings is the need to focus mainly on improving marital relationship through application of effective communication strategies by couples.
Sound Card Based ASK Communication System for Teaching Communication Principle Course  [PDF]
Ming Jin, Yang Pu
Communications and Network (CN) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/cn.2013.51B018
Abstract: This paper deals with the issue of using the MATLAB tool in teaching the course of communication principles via constructing an Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK) communication system. Different from conventional MATLAB based simulations, the constructed system transmits modulated signals through a wire audio channel by exploiting sound card. Synchronization is required before the received signal being demodulated. Many practical problems should be considered as in real system. The designed system can be extended easily, and not only stimulates students’ interest in communication course, but also helps them understanding the principles from system viewpoints.
Using Informatics to Manage and Measure Performance of Large Femtocell Networks  [PDF]
Jay A Weitzen, Rachel Wakim
Journal of Data Analysis and Information Processing (JDAIP) , 2015, DOI: 10.4236/jdaip.2015.32003
Abstract: This paper describes the analytics platform and algorithms that are used to manage network performance of large femtocell networks with close to one million femtocells from multiple vendors. The system incorporates parallel processing of the data, rule based artificial intelligence, and large scale automated data analysis and data mining.
Effects of Oral plus Graphic Communication: An Analysis and Application in the Case of a Competitive Youth Football Game  [PDF]
Moez Hamdi, Guinoubi Chamseddine, Sahli Hajer, Nejmeddine Ouerghi, Makram Zghibi
Creative Education (CE) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2016.711168
Abstract: Purpose: the primary objective of this study was to evaluate the response and application of students to “Oral plus Graphic Communication” by monitoring the implementation of the action projects in a competitive football game. Method: fourteen (14) students from Dahmani volunteer- ed and participated in the study. The motor and verbal activity of the students were observed and recorded. The study opted for both qualitative and quantitative analysis of the data. The plans and strategies prepared by the students formed the qualitative basis while the quantitative segment was based on the implementation of these schemes. Results: the students were successful in implementing the rules of action collectively from the third (3rd) cycle of the fourth (4th) session. Their involvement in the game situations, especially in the last three sessions expresses a notable familiarization with a new semiotic constructivist approach. Conclusion: the addition of “Graphic Communication” to “Oral Communication” enabled the students to identify the situation and its challenges, and provided a collective solution to overcome the identified issues, leading to a measurable and favorable outcome.

Constructionist Theory of Representation in Language and Communication: A Philosophical Analysis  [PDF]
Bonachristus Umeogu, Ojiakor Ifeoma
Open Journal of Philosophy (OJPP) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojpp.2012.22021
Abstract: There is nothing as an innocent word because every word no matter how simple it sounds is loaded with meaning. For communication to have taken place, the meaning of a word or symbol is grasped and understood by the receiver. This paper maintains that there are variables which influence the construction and decoding of meaning with the resultant effect that no two individuals construct meanings in uniform way.
Risk and Uncertainty in Anesthesia  [PDF]
Roman Pohorecki,Gary E. Hill
Open Journal of Anesthesiology (OJAnes) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ojanes.2013.37072
Abstract: This article discusses risk and uncertainty, both stochastic and epistemic, as it applies to anesthesia. It shows the difficulty in quantifying risk of individual case and the somewhat arbitrary and even incorrect and naive assignment of risk in individual patient care management. Effective and honest communication remains at the core of physician-patient relationship in discussing, evaluating and managing the individual case for optimum outcome as well as patients’ and their families' satisfaction and understanding.
