Abstract: introduction: graduation programs are evolving in brazil with the implementation and improvement of an assessment system which encourages scientific production and restructuring. objective: identify the impact of the angioplasty and coronary stenting research line of the graduation program in health sciences/cardiology, cardiology university foundation, regarding the number of papers published, time to conclusion and destiny of graduates. method: dissertations and theses presented from july 2002 to january 2009 in the area of hemodynamics and interventional cardiology and their publications were analyzed. the current status of medical, teaching and research activities of these graduates was also investigated. data were analyzed by the spss program and categorical variables are described in ratios and continuous variables are described as mean and standard deviation. results: of the 91 studies in the graduate programs, 71 (78.02%) were dissertations and 20 (21.9%) were theses. the angioplasty and coronary stenting research line was responsible for 18.3% (13/71) of the dissertations and for 30% (6/20) of the theses. most of the graduate students were physicians (9/13 or 69%) and male (8/13 or 61%). with a mean time of 8 months from dissertation to publication, 5 papers were published in international journals and 9 in national journals. all of the graduates have medical or teaching activities at their institution of origin, in other institutions in and out of the state of rio grande do sul and abroad. conclusions: a large part of the papers produced in the graduation programs of the cardiology university foundation were published. most of the graduates in the program have teaching activities in different services and institutions.

Abstract: the study aimed to analyze the themes related to the area of food safety surveillance that were approached in scientific research studies from postgraduate programs, with potential in-service application. a total of 337 theses and dissertations submitted to universidade de s?o paulo between 1993 and 2007 was analyzed. the results showed that research developed in universities can be applied to health surveillance, mainly regarding orientation to workers in this area in terms of updated practices.

Abstract:

The functional typologists divide the languages in the world into two groups, one is the subject-prominent language group and the other is the topic-prominent group. English belongs to the subject-prominent language and Chinese to the topic-prominent language. This paper aims to discuss and summarize the types and functions of topic chains on the basis of analyzing the topic chains used in the novel Fortress Besieged written by Chinese famous writer Zhongshu Qian.

Abstract: 话说结构的探讨可追溯到维尔的“起始-目的”说。甲柏连孜首先就汉语事实提出“心理主语-心理谓语”结构,并且是三个平面理论的初创者。为反对模仿“主-谓”框架,陈承泽曾提出“标语-说明语”框架。直到霍凯特讨论了英语和汉语中的话题现象,赵元任受其启迪才主张汉语主-谓的语法意义是话题-说明。李纳等依据类型说提出汉语是话题凸显型语言,刘宏谟则依据海外汉语教学实践提出“引-申”分析法。汉语有S、T、V、O四个基本句法成分的观点,既损坏了传统语法系统的自恰性,又拆散了话说结构自身的匹配性。本文基于“名词牵头说”和话题语-
The investigation of topic-comment structure can be traced back to the theory of “initiation-purpose” proposed by Weil. Gabelentz is the first scholar introducing the structure of “psychological subject-psychological predicate” in terms of Chinese language, and the pioneering innovator suggesting the three-plane theory. In order to oppose the imitation of “subject-predicate” framework, Chen Chengze put forward a “target-comment” framework. Inspired by Hockett’s discussion of the topic in English and Chinese, Chao Yen-Ren claimed that the grammatical sense of subject-predicate is a “topic-comment”. Charles N. Li proposed that Chinese is a topic-prominent language based on language typology. According to the Chinese teaching practice outside China, Liu Hongmo put forward the analysis of “topic-state”. This paper disagrees with Xu and Liu’s position that Chinese has four basic syntactic elements of S, T, V, O. In addition, owing to the “Initial-NP Determinism” and the matching relationship of the topic-comment, this paper proposes a new perspective in topic-comment research with a combination of categorization systems and matching frames

Abstract: 摘要 文章针对当前学术期刊发展中的同质化以及研究选题的相似性问题,提出了基于深度学习的学术期刊 选题同质化测度模型,分别从基于期刊整体主题分布的同质化测度和基于单篇论文相似度的期刊同质化测度两 个方面展开研究,并以图书情报与档案学核心期刊为例进行了实证,结果表明两种方法都能够较好地识别出期刊 间选题的相似性,且可以互为补充。
Abstract: Aimed at the problem of the homogeneity and the similarity of the subject in the development of the academ? ic journal, this paper proposed a method to measure the homogeneity which is based on deep learning. The model ex? pands research from the two sides, one is the whole topic distribution and the other is similarity between the single pa? per which is based on semantic and feature. Then carried out an empirical research, the result shows that the model is valid in measuring the academic journal similarity and the two methods are supplements for each other.

Predicting School Achievement Rather than Intelligence: Does Metacognition Matter?  [PDF]

Abstract:

This paper investigates the role of specific and general metacognitive ability on specific and general academic achievement, controlling for the effects of intelligence. Four hypotheses were elaborated and empirically tested through structural equation modelling. The sample was composed by 684 students (6th to 12th graders) from a private Brazilian school, which answered to three intelligence tests and three metacognitive tests. The modeled hypotheses presented a good data-fit (χ2 = 51.18; df = 19; CFI = 1.00; RMSEA = 0.05), showing that the general metacognitive ability explained general academic achievement rather than intelligence, but did not explain specific academic achievement. On the other hand, specific metacognitive ability explained specific academic achievement rather than intelligence, but did not explain general academic achievement. The predictive power of the general metacognitive ability was greater than fluid intelligence in the explanation of general academic achievement. In the same line, specific metacognitive ability had a greater predictive power than intelligence and specific knowledge in the explanation of specific academic achievement. Finally, a new structural model of metacognition and its role in academic achievement are proposed.

Abstract: Grades and test scores are the traditional measurement of academic achievement. Quantitative improvements on standardized scores in Math/Science/Language are highly-coveted outcomes for meeting accreditation standards required for institutional program funding. Music and the Fine Arts, difficult to assess by traditional academic achievement measurement, and often devalued as so-called “luxury” subjects, struggle for necessary funding. Showing measureable collateral value to other academic subjects—such as math—in order to justify music program funding is dubious. To objectify the purpose of music education in terms of its influence on other subjects is to overlook aesthetic value. The scholarly literature recognizes an historical tendency to correlate music activities and aptitude to other subjects (and to intelligence in general), but quantitative cause-effect claims are not supported scientifically. Music participation from childhood helps build productive, well-socialized, excellent people, but to quantitatively trace the cause to music itself remains unproven. To recognize the benefits of music and the arts by aesthetic merit involves practical, holistic views of education not based on quantifiable test scoring.

Abstract: Topic segmentation was addressed by a large amount of work from which it is not easy to draw conclusions, especially about the need for knowledge. In this article, we propose in the same framework two methods for improving the results of a topic segmenter based on lexical reiteration. The first one is endogenous and exploits the distributional similarity of the words of a document for discovering its topics. These topics are then used to facilitate the detection of topical similarity between discourse units. The second approach achieves the same goal by relying on an external resource, that is a network of lexical co-occurrences built from a large corpus. These two approaches are also combined. An evaluation of these approaches and their combination is performed in a reference framework and shows the interest of this combination.
