International Journal of Clinical Medicine (IJCM) , 2018, DOI: 10.4236/ijcm.2018.93016
Abstract: Mitochondria are evolutionary bacteria that are dynamic intracellular organelles involved in many vital cellular functions. However, modern medicine has fallen prey to misuse and over-usage of antibiotics. This misuse can damage the mitochondrion, alter host antibiotic interactions, and cause serious pathophysiologic conditions. We believe this leads to mitochondrial dysfunction, which may promote tumorigenesis and neurodegeneration. This opinion commentary’s goal is to bring awareness of this important hot topic to the medical community before induced modern plagues are irreversible.

The collected volume investigates diverse performances of cosmetic surgery and other bodily operations as cultural avenues of approach to the creation of subject identity. The study examines the ambivalence of such manipulations as they oscillate between self-empowerment and self-subjugation from a gender-theoretical perspective. The redundant references to Foucauldian perspectives can be easily ignored due to the interdisciplinary multiplicity of sources.
Fatigue, Indolence And The There Is, Or, The Temporal Logic Of Collage In Donald Barthelme’s Snow White

European Journal of American Studies , 2010, DOI: 10.4000/ejas.8732
Abstract: The essay examines Donald Barthelme’s Snow White’s from the perspective of the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas. Drawing on a reciprocity between Barthelme’s collage principle and Levinas’s notion of the there is, the paper applies the concept in the analysis of Snow White’s referential and affect construction strategies. The novel is proven to textualize the ethical dimension of Barthelme’s referential uses of language, while the figure of Snow White is demonstrated to be the trope of the referentiality-performativity conflict that lies at the core of a literary collage. The tension between referentiality and performativity is further developed in Barthelme’s novel via the figures of Bill and Paul, who, in the context of Levinas’s concepts of fatigue and indolence respectively, are interpreted as the tropological markers of the temporal mechanism of Snow White’s collage. Accordingly, Bill’s constant weariness is interpreted as a trope of referentiality, and Paul’s inertia as narrating the mechanism of language performatives. Since the suspension between the two tropes propels the text’s constant self-questioning, a process mirroring Levinas’s idea of how ethical subjectivity hypostatically emerges in language as a questioning of its ontological stability, it is argued that the mechanism of subject construction strategy in Snow White follows a similar logic.
Modelling Environmental Attitudes of the Users of Kilombero Valley Wetlands, Tanzania  [PDF]

Abstract: Development policies have for a long time made it more profitable for people to degrade than to conserve environment. The adoption of these economic wide policies by Africa especially during colonial time and after independence has resulted into erosion of its communities’ conservation behaviour and attitude. Although many studies assess environmental attitudes, those focussing on African regions or countries using New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale are very limited. Such studies in the African context using NEP scale are very important, simply because many people depend on the environment for their livelihood, and in the process they destroy the world’s valued ecosystems including wetlands. This study is meant to fill in the gap using Kilombero valley wetlands in Tanzania as a case. The study used Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to predict the behaviour of the users based on attitudes, environmental knowledge and awareness. The findings indicate that users of the Kilombero wetlands have a generally positive attitude towards the environment, despite a great degree of variability among the study participants. The study shows also that a certain level of environmental awareness is needed in order to increase people’s knowledge about environmental issues and change their environmental attitudes. The NEP scale does not fully fit into the Tanzanian context, thus suggesting that further research into the adaptation of the scale is needed.
The influence of glass surface preparation on electrical and optical properties of SnO2 thin films obtained by spray pyrolysis technique

Optica Applicata , 2008,
Abstract: SnO2 conducting thin films were prepared by spray pyrolysis. Glass surface was prepared by etching in HF and acetic acid solutions. Sodium barrier coatings with different compositions were prepared by the sol–gel technique. The influence of the glass surface preparation on optical properties of SnO2 was studied using reflectance spectroscopy. XPS was used as a tool to evaluate barrier properties of the coating. The morphology of the thin layer was studied by a scanning electron microscope. The results have shown that the titanium containing coating has the best sodium diffusion barrier property. The conductivity of SnO2 film strongly depends on the glass surface preparation. The lowest conductivity was measured for clean glass but the highest for alumina containing barrier coating.
Why NA?

Abstract: The paper is conceived as answer to the question why just the locative / adlative preposition na was chosen as grammatical marker for both dative and genitive case relationship in the Balkan Slavic languages. As key process which triggered all the subsequent changes the author sees generalization of the dative morphological form in the adnominal position.
On some neglected balkanisms in the Serbian verbal systems

Abstract: The author finds that one of the most prominent features of the so-called Balkan Sprachbund is the extended system of grammaticalized modal distinctions both in the episthemic and deontic functional zone. She then focuses on two tendencies characteristic of the Balkan Sprachbund which are also present in the Serbian verbal system: (1) the differentiation of the exponents of the predicate of negation depending on its function and position in the discourse, and (2) the tendency to transform the synsemantic, most often modal, verbs into indeclinable particles.

Acta Scientiarum Polonorum : Technologia Alimentaria , 2012,
Abstract: Introduction. Contemporary diet of men is characterised by a significant contribution of processed and puri- fied products impoverished by technological processing in, e.g., B-group vitamins taking part in the synthesis of fatty acids. One of the means to prevent their insufficient intake is supplementation of food products with those components. Hence, an animal model study was undertaken in order to determine whether modification of diet composition in which whole-grain components (whole grains of wheat and maize) are isocalorically substituted with white flour and saccharose, and its complementary supplementation with B-group vitamins may trigger changes in the profile of fatty acids synthesized in liver of rats. Material and methods. The study was conducted on 30 male rats aged 5 months. Group I was receiving the basal feed mixture (Labofed B), which contained among other things whole grains of wheat and maize. Groups II-III, in free access, were administered modified feed mixture in which 83.5% of wheat present in the basal diet was substituted with wheat flour, and 50% of maize – with saccharose. Contents of vitamin B1 , B2 ,B6 and PP and basic chemical composition in the feed mixture are determined by HPLC method and the fatty acid profile with the modified Folch method using gas chromatography. Groups I and II were receiving water to drink, whereas the animals from group III were administered 25 ml of an aqueous solution of vitamins in the following doses: B1 – 0.94 mg, B2 – 0.48 mg, B6 – 0.5 mg, PP – 1.9 mg. In group III – to supplement differences in contents of those vitamins between feed mixtures resulting from the exchange of components, which to some extent simulated the mode of supplementation in humans. Concentration of glucose was determined in blood serum and the amount of fat was determined with Soxhlet method in the dissected animals liver and the fatty acid profile with the modified Folch method using gas chromatography. Results. While analysing the achieved results it was stated that the animals, despite comparable quantities of ingested feed, differed in their body weight gains reached in the course of the experiment. In contrast, both the liver mass and its fat content did not differ significantly between the analysed groups of animals. Further- more, livers of the animals fed the modified diet were characterised by a decreased sum of monoenoic fatty acids and an increased sum of polyenoic fatty acids, compared to the animals receiving the basal diet. The fatty acid composition determined in livers of the animals fed the modifie
