Abstract: the rat lungworm angiostrongylus cantonensis is a worldwide-distributed zoonotic nematode that can cause human eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. here, for the first time, we report the isolation of a. cantonensis from achatina fulica from two brazilian states: rio de janeiro (specifically the municipalities of barra do piraí, situated at the paraiba river valley region and s?o gon?alo, situated at the edge of guanabara bay) and santa catarina (in municipality of joinville). the lungworms were identified by comparing morphological and morphometrical data obtained from adult worms to values obtained from experimental infections of a. cantonensis from pernambuco, brazil, and akita, japan. only a few minor morphological differences that were determined to represent intra-specific variation were observed. this report of a. cantonensis in south and southeast brazil, together with the recent report of the zoonosis and parasite-infected molluscs in northeast brazil, provide evidence of the wide distribution of a. cantonensis in the country. the need for efforts to better understand the role of a. fulica in the transmission of meningoencephalitis in brazil and the surveillance of molluscs and rodents, particularly in ports, is emphasized.
DEGRADA O DA VITAMINA C EM SUCO DE FRUTA
M. TEIXEIRA,M. MONTEIRO
Alimentos e Nutri??o , 2009,

International Journal of Geosciences (IJG) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/ijg.2011.23027
Abstract: Investigation of process controlling the estuarine-shelf interaction in the Patos Lagoon estuarine channel is accessed using a two-dimensional numerical model. Results obtained suggest this approximation provides good precision level to investigate the advective transport of oceanic waters near the estuarine mouth. The introduction of coastal waters in synoptic time scales is dominated by advection in sub-superficial layers. This process results from the competition between flood currents driven by remote wind effects and gravitational circulation controlled by the intensity of the freshwater discharge. The short term exchange processes follow one most energetic cycle of 8 days and intense flood events occur during periods of low continental discharge and higher intensity winds. Very stratified salinity profiles are found during periods of moderated freshwater discharge. The salt transport is inversely related to the freshwater discharge intensity. It presents a mean rate of the 105 kg.day-1 transported landward during flood events.
Biodiversity Assessment of Sugar Beet Species and Its Wild Relatives: Linking Ecological Data with New Genetic Approaches  [PDF]

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2013.48A003
Abstract:

The value of crop wild relatives has long been acknowledged and this wild resource has been used to improve crop performance with clear economic benefits. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris) is the most economically valuable crop species in the order Caryophyllales, B. vulgaris subsp. maritima being the ancestor of the cultivated beets. The wild species of the genus Beta s.l. are commonly found in coastal areas of Europe and Mediterranean Region, where a rich genetic heritage still exists. Broadening the genetic base of sugar beet by introgression with wild relatives is a growing need regarding the maintenance of ecologically important traits. Since wild relatives have adapted to specific habitats, they constitute an important source of novel traits for the beet breeding pool. So, we conducted a broader research project aiming to delimit taxa and identify priority locations to establish genetic reserves of the wild Beta species occurring in Portugal (Western Iberian Peninsula). The aim of this study was: 1) to identify and characterize the main habitats of these wild Beta species; and 2) to present a review of some genetic tools available for future application in sugar beet breeding. In this review, we have focused on EcoTILLING as a molecular tool to assess DNA polymer

Physical activity and nutrition intervention for mothers of young children: Process evaluation  [PDF]

Health (Health) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/health.2014.63033
Abstract: Introduction: Process evaluation of community based projects is integral to understanding the success or failure of health promotion interventions. Process evaluation was used to assess the intervention strategies and resources in a playgroup setting aimed at mothers of young children. Methods: Process evaluation data were collected from participants (n = 249) and staff (n = 25) involved in the intervention. Data included staff perspectives on use of the playgroup as a setting, participants’ views on the feasibility and acceptability of the program strategies and resources, and program reach. Results: Responding participants reported that the intervention was useful (98%) and relevant for their age group (92%), encouraged them to think about making changes to their physical activity (95%) and dietary (98%) behaviors, and helped them to make changes to their physical activity (66%) and dietary (79%) behaviors. Participants reported that the most useful intervention strategies included the program booklet (85%), workshops (86%), newsletters (73%) and SMS (57%). Conclusion: This research provides valuable information on participants’ perspectives of the program strategies, content and overall implementation. It provides insight into the feasibility and acceptability of the intervention and identifies areas for improvement when conducting programs in playgroup settings. The process evaluation indicated that playgroups are a suitable setting for health promotion targeting mothers of young children.

Palavras-chave: Solu es parenterais de grandes volumes, bolsas de PVC, DEHP, ciclosporina, migra o.
Unilateral blindness as a complication of nasal septoplasty: case report
Monteiro, Mário Luiz Ribeiro;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492006000200020
Abstract: blindness as a complication of nasal septoplasty is a devastating occurrence with only a few cases reported in the literature. in most of these cases, visual loss was attributed to retinal embolism following intra-arterial injection of substances into the nasal turbinate. this paper documents one case of complete unilateral blindness from direct optic nerve trauma following an apparently uneventful septorhinoplasty. ophthalmologists and otolaryngologists should therefore be aware of the possible occurrence of such complication.
Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy: a comparison of the optic disc area of patients with the arteritic and non-arteritic forms of the disease and that of normal controls
Monteiro, Mário Luiz Ribeiro;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492006000600005
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the optic disc area of patients with non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (na-aion) and arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (a-aion) and compare the results between each other and with those from controls in order to verify the existence and the magnitude of anatomical factors predisposing to the development of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. methods: this is a case-controlled study of the optic disc area of 24 consecutive patients affected with na-aion, 13 patients with a-aion and 24 consecutive healthy normals, sex- and age-matched with the patients with the na-aion group. measurements of optic disc area were performed for each studied group using disc photographs projected, measured and corrected for the refractive error and the keratometric readings, according to littmann's method in each studied group. the results were compared using variance analysis. results: the mean areas and standard deviations of the optic discs from patients with na-aion, a-aion and normals were respectively 1.99 ± 0.35 mm2, 2.29 ± 0.39 mm2 and 2.49 ± 0.53 mm2. the statistical analysis revealed that the mean areas of the optic disc of patients with na-aion were significantly different from those of normal controls. no statistical difference was found between a-aion and normal controls. conclusion: na-aion occurs predominantly in small discs while the arteritic form of the disease shows no such preference. factors related to optic disc structure play a role in the pathophysiology of na-aion. the occurrence of aion in large optic optic discs should raise the suspicion of temporal arteritis. on the other hand, small optic disc areas do not rule out that vasculitis.
