Abstract: A framework named Copula Component Analysis (CCA) for blind source separation is proposed as a generalization of Independent Component Analysis (ICA). It differs from ICA which assumes independence of sources that the underlying components may be dependent with certain structure which is represented by Copula. By incorporating dependency structure, much accurate estimation can be made in principle in the case that the assumption of independence is invalidated. A two phrase inference method is introduced for CCA which is based on the notion of multidimensional ICA.
Dependence Structure Estimation via Copula

Abstract: We propose a new framework for dependence structure learning via copula. Copula is a statistical theory on dependence and measurement of association. Graphical models are considered as a type of special case of copula families, named product copula. In this paper, a nonparametric algorithm for copula estimation is presented. Then a Chow-Liu like method based on dependence measure via copula is proposed to estimate maximum spanning product copula with only bivariate dependence relations. The advantage of the framework is that learning with empirical copula focuses only on dependence relations among random variables, without knowing the properties of individual variables. Another advantage is that copula is a universal model of dependence and therefore the framework based on it can be generalized to deal with a wide range of complex dependence relations. Experiments on both simulated data and real application data show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Bacterial Inactivation of Wound Infection in a Human Skin Model by Liquid-Phase Discharge Plasma

Abstract: Background We investigate disinfection of a reconstructed human skin model contaminated with biofilm-formative Staphylococcus aureus employing plasma discharge in liquid. Principal Findings We observed statistically significant 3.83-log10 (p<0.001) and 1.59-log10 (p<0.05) decreases in colony forming units of adherent S. aureus bacteria and 24 h S. aureus biofilm culture with plasma treatment. Plasma treatment was associated with minimal changes in histological morphology and tissue viability determined by means of MTT assay. Spectral analysis of the plasma discharge indicated the presence of highly reactive atomic oxygen radicals (777 nm and 844 nm) and OH bands in the UV region. The contribution of these and other plasma-generated agents and physical conditions to the reduction in bacterial load are discussed. Conclusions These findings demonstrate the potential of liquid plasma treatment as a potential adjunct therapy for chronic wounds.

Abstract: Cichoric acid is the main phenolic compound in the root and rhizome of the medicinal part, Echinacea purpurea that is known for possessing immune enhancing characteristics. In this study, we analysis the the synthesis and storage sites of phenolic compound in E. purpurea. We used fluorescent microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, cytochemical and immunocytochemical localization to observe the distribution of phenolic compounds. Our results show that the phenolic compounds were mostly distributed in the cortex parenchyma cells, vascular parenchyma cells and pith parenchyma cells in the root and rhizome, and mainly present in the vacuoles, large intercellular spaces and their surrounding cell walls. No phenolic compounds were observed in the cytoplasm and the organelles. We concluded that the phenolic compounds were synthetized in the cortex parenchyma cells, vascular parenchyma cells and pith parenchyma cells in the root and rhizome, and stored in the vacuoles of parenchyma cells. The above results provided significantly cytological information for further approaching the metabolic regulation and transfer pathways of phenolic compounds in biochemistry and molecular biology.

A Highly Reliable Reconstruction of a BP Network When Input Errors Considered

Abstract: The input errors of BP(Back-Propagation) network are classified into dead point error and phase reversal error in this paper. A highly reliable reconstruction method for a BP network is proposed. The reliability problem of the reconstructed BP network is discussed under the above mentioned input errors respectively. It is shown that, when the probabilities that the inputs are correct (input reliabilities) are varying within a determined region, by increasing the number of inputs, the probability that the reconstructed BP network realizes the giyen function correctly (network reliability) may approach 1. The reconstructed BP network is fault tolerant to input errors to some extent.
