Abstract: The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is frequently activated in human cancer and plays a crucial role in glioblastoma biology. We were interested in gaining further insight into the potential of targeting PI3K isoforms as a novel anti-tumor approach in glioblastoma. Consistent expression of the PI3K catalytic isoform PI3K p110α was detected in a panel of glioblastoma patient samples. In contrast, PI3K p110β expression was only rarely detected in glioblastoma patient samples. The expression of a module comprising the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)/PI3K p110α/phosphorylated ribosomal S6 protein (p-S6) was correlated with shorter patient survival. Inhibition of PI3K p110α activity impaired the anchorage-dependent growth of glioblastoma cells and induced tumor regression in vivo. Inhibition of PI3K p110α or PI3K p110β also led to impaired anchorage-independent growth, a decreased migratory capacity of glioblastoma cells, and reduced the activation of the Akt/mTOR pathway. These effects were selective, because targeting of PI3K p110δ did not result in a comparable impairment of glioblastoma tumorigenic properties. Together, our data reveal that drugs targeting PI3K p110α can reduce growth in a subset of glioblastoma tumors characterized by the expression of EGFR/PI3K p110α/p-S6.
Os alfabetizados-desviantes ou sobre a educa??o dos 6 anos

Abstract: in the present text we bring forward the study carried out with a first-year class of six-year-olds from a nine-year fundamental schooling public unit located at the outskirts of porto alegre, rio grande do sul. it reveals how the children from this first-year class weave their literacy process, and escape from the stigma of sorrow and failure. we analyze the documents that order and organize the life of children and teachers (mec law no. 11274 of 2006 and efna) through business and governmental programs, which thereby become the all-seeing eye - argos panopticon. opting for a handicraft methodology, and based on post-structuralist studies, we interlace the analysis of legal documents with participant observations. a special situation is described here that left its mark on the literacy process of this class, namely, how flávia, the chubby black six-year-old girl that helps giving title to this article, firmly outside every naturalizing parameter of girl-subjects, or of those who have everything going for them in life, finds her own way to learn to read, and takes her group with her. one deals here with the joy, in its power to act, of a deviant-literate who constitutes herself as a reader of stories to her group, and how this vitality of creation transforms the learning process of children and teachers alike. the article concludes wishing that we evoke the spinozian joy of the discovery of literacy, even if deviant, in the literacy process of six-year-old boys and girls. an invitation to deviate!
STCP-Timestamp: Bandwidth Estimation Algorithm to Improve TCP Performance in Integrated Wireless Communication Networks
Ezil Sam Leni A.
Asian Journal of Information Technology , 2012,
Abstract: As wireless networks with high data rate get widely deployed, improving the performance of TCP over these networks plays vital role. Wireless link losses have dramatic adverse impact on TCP performance due to the difficulty in distinguishing the congestion losses from wireless link losses. We studied the various existing Bandwidth Estimation Algorithms. Then we proposed a new technique to estimate the available bandwidth using the timestamp option of the TCP Header. The proposed system is evaluated in the integrated wireless environment and the simulated results are also shown.
Ecosystem Under Construction: An Action Research Study on Entrepreneurship in a Business Ecosystem
Marikka Heikkil?,Leni Kuivaniemi
Technology Innovation Management Review , 2012,
Abstract: In recent years, we have seen increasing interest in new service concepts that take advantage of the capabilities of business ecosystems instead of single companies. In this article, we describe how a business ecosystem begins to develop around a service business idea proposed by an entrepreneur. We aim to recognize the different domains of players that are or should be involved in the ecosystem while it is under construction. The article concludes with an ecosystem model consisting of six sub-ecosystems having different change drivers and clockspeeds.
Vraagsturing vraagt om reflexief ondernemen – praktijkbijdrage
Leni Beukema,Christa Kleijnen
Journal of Social Intervention : Theory and Practice , 2008,
Abstract: Parc Imstenrade is a housing facility for senior citizens in Heerlen. The past few years a demanddriven approach was implemented in the organization. Leni Beukema (advisor) and Christa Kleijnen (manager) were strongly involved in this implementation and they report on their experiences and findings. They use the term ‘demand-driven’ in a very specific meaning: residents of Parc Imstenrade are not considered as demanding’ clients, but as individuals with their own specific needs and possibilities. Implementing such a demand-driven approach has consequences for all layers in the organization. Every layer is discussed by the authors and in doing that, they formulate valuable themes that had to be dealt with during the implementation.
Multidisciplinaire sociale teams als cli ntgestuurd netwerk
Leni Beukema,Henk Spies
Journal of Social Intervention : Theory and Practice , 2008,
Abstract: This article presents results from an evaluation research on social teams in the city of Leeuwarden. In these teams organisations for addicted people, mental health, social service, police, welfare and social work, try to co-ordinate their help and interventions with regard to multiproblem families. The authors present results at the individual level (citizens), the organisational level (participating organisations) and the level of local social policy. At the individual level it is remarkable that clients are often transferred from the ‘hard’ side to the ‘soft’ side of the teams, which is a positive thing from the point of view of prevention and safety. However, there is no systematic feedback and hardly any evaluation of the efficiency of the results. On the organisational level, participation in social teams seems to be too non-committal. This causes the teams to function as consultations rather than as an integral approach. On the level of social policy the status of the social teams is not yet clear. These teams could have an important role in tying together individual problems and problems in public spaces and neighbourhoods, as well as in tying together professional and informal networks. Especially with regard to the upcoming reforms in social support, this could be investigated further.
Proceso de construcción identitaria del pedagogo universitario en México
Cazales, Zaira Navarrete;
Cadernos de Pesquisa , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-15742008000200012
Abstract: in this article, a few results of a research called 'the pedagogue and his/her professional identity: the case of pedagogy graduates from the universidad nacional autónoma de mexico (unam) and universidad veracruzana (uv)' are presented. the study had two aims: a) to identify the processes of identity construction among pedagogues graduated from these universities in the decades of 1950, 1970 and 1990, according to their undergraduate study programs; and, b) to point out the characteristics which defined their identities. the central question of the investigation was: which were the characteristics that constituted unam's and uv's pedagogue identity, and of which pedagogue identity are we talking about? after having interviewed 12 pedagogues (six per institution and two per generation) and analyzed their statements and documents (such as their study programs, papers published etc.), it is possible to say, in the light of the theoretic framework and considering the research's questions, that the pedagogue identity encompasses a historical, relational and hybrid identity: the pedagogue is a professional who performs several functions, all of them linked to a sector of education (formal, non-formal and informal), considering them, however, in a very distinct manner in relationship to other education-related professions.
Inclusión de la música en los planes y programas de estudio en las escuelas venezolanas
Revista de Pedagogía , 2009,
Abstract: the aim of this study is to describe what has occurred with the teaching of music at primary schools in the country. history teaches us that from ancient times music has been taken to be an integral part of education in many countries. in venezuela, however, this discipline has not been considered a regular school subject in elementary education studies, occupying a secondary role. nevertheless, albeit modestly, our governments have shown concern and have begun to include music as a cultural expression without, as yet, making it an obligatory part of scholastic study programs
An Analysis of Effective Teaching Approach of Mother Fixation in the Novel Sons and Lovers
Shumaila Mazhar,Zaira Wahab
International Journal of Asian Social Science , 2012,
Abstract: Sons and Lovers is considered to be one of the most significant works of D.H. Lawrence which is being taught in many universities of Pakistan for several years. As a piece of art, undoubtedly, this novel transmits some moral values and an exact picture of life, but the central theme about the phenomenon of Mother Fixation exerts some undesirable impact on students’ perception for its being a taboo in our society. Thus the present study tries to explore the effective teaching approach of the Theme of Mother Fixation to Pakistani students. The approach is based on the notion that Freud’s Theory of Mother Fixation is in utter contrast with the family values of Pakistani society exercising a pernicious impact on students’ perception. Thus the present study aims at investigating the attitudes and opinions of teachers of the novel Sons and Lovers. It has adopted phenomenology as a research paradigm. Data were collected from all the universities of Quetta teaching this novel. The study examined some of the impediments that teachers face in literature class, while dealing with this theme as well as how they tend to overcome these hurdles. There is some evidence from the data that majority of the respondents expressed feelings of embarrassment and hesitation while discussing the Theme of Mother Fixation, especially in the presence of the opposite sex and preferred to avoid the sensitive aspect of incestuous relationships in the novel . The result has shown that the Theme of Mother Fixation, if handled properly while observing the ethical limitations of Pakistani society, would not harm the perception of the students about their family values. In addition to this, teachers cited valid concerns about giving a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the psychological aspect of the theme, taking into consideration the cultural restraints of Pakistani society.
