Effect of Ultrasound on Anti-solvent Crystallization Process of Glycin

Abstract: Crystallization of aqueous glycin solution with acetone as the anti-solvent is studied to examine the effects of ultrasound on crystal size and habit. With ultrasound excitations, the solution experiences cavitation, first nucleation, second nucleation, crystal growth, fragmentation, etc. Introducing ultrasound at different times or for different durations will have different influences on the crystallization distribution. If ultrasound is introduced for a short time before the onset of homogeneous nucleation to induce nucleation, one will obtain larger crystals, whereas if the ultrasound is introduced at or after the onset of homogeneous nucleation, smaller crystals will be obtained. If ultrasound is used in the growth stage, the crystals will also be small because the crystals will be fragmented by ultrasound.

Advances of Constructal Theory in Engineering Applications

Abstract: In view of engineering design and optimization, applications of constructal theory in several engineering areas are introduced, especially in design and optimization of heat transfer and fluid distribution devices, the significance and potential value of constructal theory in engineering applications are highlighted. As a novel process system designing theory, constructal theory needs to be developed and improved. The application prospect of constructal theory in chemical engineering process/devices design and optimization is also discussed.
First-principles calculation for mechanical properties of metal dihydrides

Abstract: The mechanical properties of MH2 (M= La, Nd, Gd, Tb, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu, Sc, Ti, Zr, Hf) are studied by the first-principles calculations. The results show that the fluorite structures of MH2 (M= La, Nd, Gd, Tb, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Lu, Sc) are stable at low temperatures. Their bulk moduli, shear moduli and Young's moduli increase in the order of LaH2, NdH2, GdH2, TbH2, YH2, DyH2, HoH2, ErH2, LuH2 and ScH2. However, the cubic phases of MH2 (M= Ti, Zr, Hf) are unstable at low temperatures. According to the densities of states and charge densities of TbH2, ErH2, TiH2 and HfH2, it can be found that the stabilities of metal dihydrides depend on the interaction between metal and hydrogen atoms.

Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the behaviour of helium atoms in titanium at a temperature of 300K. The nucleation and growth of helium bubble has been simulated up to 50 helium atoms. The approach to simulate the bubble growth is to add helium atoms one by one to the bubble and let the system evolve. The titanium cohesion is based on the tight binding scheme derived from the embedded atom method, and thehelium--titanium interaction is characterized by fitted potential in the form of a Lennard-Jones function. The pressure in small helium bubbles is approximately calculated. The simulation results show that the pressure will decrease with the increasing bubble size, while increase with the increasing helium atoms. An analytic function about the quantitative relationship of the pressure with the bubble size and number of helium atoms is also fitted.

Abstract: Yield formation characters of a hybrid rice variety under SRI (System of Rice Intensification) cultivation mode and its ecological factors show that in Nanjing the early sowing rice can not fully take advantage of more -tillers of SRI into full play due to the lower temperature;although the late sowing rice can meet the demand of temperature at tillering stage, heat in the l ate growth per iod is not sufficient,thus lowering the rate of seed set and 1000-grain weight.A nalysis on the adaptability of SRI through meteorological data of Madagascar and the southern rice growing region of China suggests that the SRI cultivation met hod may be suitable for the coastal rice growing regions of Hainan,Guangdong,Gua ngxi provinces region and the lower altitude regions of the Yunnan- Guizhou Plateau.
