Reconstructing electromagnetic obstacles by the enclosure method

Abstract: We present a reconstruction algorithm for recovering both "magnetic-hard" and "magnetic-soft" obstacles in a background domain with known isotropic medium from the boundary impedance map. We use in our algorithm complex geometric optics solutions constructed for Maxwell's equation.

An Efficient Renewable Energy Management and Sharing System for Sustainable Embedded Devices

Abstract: We present the design and evaluation of a capacitor-driven efficient renewable energy management and sharing system, called REMS system, that is designed to replace battery-based energy storage units. We first identify potential applications and requirements of the REMS system. Then we describe the design of REMS system which aims at minimizing the energy leaked away and providing accurate and fine-grained energy sharing between embedded devices. We extensively evaluate our system under different real-world settings. Results indicate that our charging and discharging control can effectively minimize the energy leaked away. Moreover, the energy sharing design can efficiently share renewable energy among multiple devices and significantly extend the lifetime of a system.
The Urban Land Ecosystem Health Evaluation in Chengdu City

Abstract: This article declares the connotation of the Urban Land Ecosystem Health by ecological economics theory and method based on the study of ecosystem health. Besides, this paper constructs the evaluation system composed of “Vigor-Organization-Resilience-Ecosystem service function-Lifestyle” to analyse the urban land ecosystem healthy status in Chengdu city, and the evaluation results are calculated by parametric synthesis method. The results indicate that the system has been generally getting healthier from 2001 to 2009, ending up with a relative stable state in recent years, which is attributed to a series of policies. Thus, it is necessary for the government to take measures to spur the city vigor release, resilience and service enhancement, and a positive attitude towards the urban land ecosystem healthy protection should be established among the public.

On Approximate Electromagnetic Cloaking by Transformation Media

Abstract: We give a comprehensive study on regularized approximate electromagnetic cloaking via the transformation optics approach. The following aspects are investigated: (i) near-invisibility cloaking of passive media as well as active/radiating sources; (ii) the existence of cloak- busting inclusions without lossy medium lining; (iii) overcoming the cloaking-busts by employing a lossy layer outside the cloaked region; (iv) the frequency dependence of the cloaking performances. We address these issues and connect the obtained asymptotic results to singular ideal cloaking. Numerical verifications and demonstrations are provided to show the sharpness of our analytical study.
Two dimensional invisibility cloaking via transformation optics

Abstract: We investigate two-dimensional invisibility cloaking via transformation optics approach. The cloaking media possess much more singular parameters than those having been considered for three-dimensional cloaking in literature. Finite energy solutions for these cloaking devices are studied in appropriate weighted Sobolev spaces. We derive some crucial properties of the singularly weighted Sobolev spaces. The invisibility cloaking is then justified by decoupling the underlying singular PDEs into one problem in the cloaked region and the other one in the cloaking layer. We derive some completely novel characterizations of the finite energy solutions corresponding to the singular cloaking problems. Particularly, some `hidden' boundary conditions on the cloaking interface are shown for the first time. We present our study for a very general system of PDEs, where the Helmholtz equation underlying acoustic cloaking is included as a special case.
Two dimensional invisibility cloaking for Helmholtz equation and non-local boundary conditions

Abstract: Transformation optics constructions have allowed the design of cloaking devices that steer electromagnetic, acoustic and quantum waves around a region without penetrating it, so that this region is hidden from external observations. The material pa- rameters used to describe these devices are anisotropic, and singular at the interface between the cloaked and uncloaked regions, making physical realization a challenge. These singular material parameters correspond to singular coefficient functions in the partial differential equations modeling these constructions and the presence of these singularities causes various mathematical problems and physical effects on the interface surface. In this paper, we analyze the two dimensional cloaking for Helmholtz equation when there are sources or sinks present inside the cloaked region. In particular, we consider nonsingular approximate invisibility cloaks based on the truncation of the singular transformations. Using such truncation we analyze the limit when the approximate cloaking approaches the ideal cloaking. We show that, surprisingly, a non-local boundary condition appears on the inner cloak interface. This effect in the two dimensional (or cylindrical) invisibility cloaks, which seems to be caused by the infinite phase velocity near the interface between the cloaked and uncloaked regions, is very different from the earlier studied behavior of the solutions in the three dimensional cloaks.
On global uniqueness for an IBVP for the time-harmonic Maxwell equations

Abstract: In this paper we prove uniqueness for an inverse boundary value problem (IBVP) arising in electrodynamics. We assume that the electromagnetic properties of the medium, namely the magnetic permeability, the electric permittivity and the conductivity, are described by continuously differentiable functions.
