Unemployment as a Risk Factor for Mental Illness: Combining Social and Psychiatric Literature  [PDF]

Abstract:

Unemployment has been shown to have wide ranging effects on physical and mental health. This review looks to clarify the relationship between unemployment and mental illness specifically, in terms of establishing causality, effect size and moderating factors. The current rational for research combines an etiological approach and interest in the social causation of disease with past work from a social psychological perspective. For this review, PsychInfo, Medline and Embase databases were searched between the years of 1970 and 2011, for prospective studies that include unemployment and mental illness terms. 10 studies were found which matched the inclusion criteria. Studies were included if they studied the long term unemployed, defined the age and gender of their study population, defined their outcome measurements in medical terms, and followed a population prospectively over time. Overall unemployment did precede mental illness; however the exact effect size is unclear. A quantitative meta-analysis was not conducted due to the variability in study design. The discussion tries to point to methodological and theoretical limitations that affect investigations into unemployment and mental illness. It concludes that the work has so far been skewed by individual biases, and that there needs to be wider collaboration between the social sciences and psychiatry.

Abstract:
Under the wave of information-based education reform in China, the flipped classroom originated from American educational circles, guided by constructivism and relying on modern information technology, as an innovative teaching mode, is attracting the attention and favor of our educational circles with its unique advantages. Guided by the reform of education, this paper conducted a research on the application of flipped classroom teaching mode in university teaching. In the half-year term teaching experiment, the teaching effect of this mode and the acceptability of students were mainly discussed through questionnaires and empirical research on final scores. The result shows that compared with conventional teaching, this model can significantly improve students’ learning effect, optimize the learning process, improve students’ learning attitude, and is recognized by the majority of students.
Stable finite element pair for Stokes problem and discrete Stokes complex on quadrilateral grids

Abstract: In this paper, we first construct a nonconforming finite element pair for the incompressible Stokes problem on quadrilateral grids, and then construct a discrete Stokes complex associated with that finite element pair. The finite element spaces involved consist of piecewise polynomials only, and the divergence-free condition is imposed in a primal formulation. Combined with some existing results, these constructions can be generated onto grids that consist of both triangular and quadrilateral cells.
A mixture model based approach for estimating the FDR in replicated microarray data  [PDF]

Abstract: One of the mostly used methods for estimating the false discovery rate (FDR) is the permutation based method. The permutation based method has the well-known granularity problem due to the discrete nature of the permuted null scores. The granularity problem may produce very unstable FDR estimates. Such instability may cause scientists to over- or under-estimate the number of false positives among the genes declared as significant, and hence result in inaccurate interpretation of biological data. In this paper, we propose a new model based method as an improvement of the permutation based FDR estimation method of SAM [1] The new method uses the t-mixture model which can model the microarray data better than the currently used normal mixture model. We will show that our proposed method provides more accurate FDR estimates than the permutation based method and is free of the problems of the permutation based FDR estimators. Finally, the proposed method is evaluated using extensive simulation and real microarray data.

Abstract: Objective: To summarize clinical evidence of traditional Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of chronic heart failure systematically and comprehensively. MethodBy retrieving in the database of VIP, WanFang, CNKI, PubMed, Cochrane Library, the qualifying results obtained in the databases above are summarized into the grading evidence including systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, observational studies, case studies, basic research these five levels. Results: The numbers of the articles included are 12 systematic reviews, 413 randomized controlled trials, 68 observational studies, 15 case reports and 187 fundamental researches. Conclusion: It is concluded that basing on the clinical evidence of different levels, traditional Chinese medicine has prominent ability of preventing and treatment chronic heart failure.

Multicentric randomized double blinded clinical study of Yiqi Tongmai Oral Liquid against angina pectoris in patients with coronary heart disease

Abstract: Objective: To study the efficacy and safety of Yiqi Tongmai Oral Liquid (YQTM), a traditional compound Chinese herbal medicine, in treating angina pectoris in patients with coronary heart disease. Methods: A multicentric, randomized, double blinded and paralleled controlled trial was conducted on 110 patients in trial group treated with YQTM, and 109 patients in control group treated with Shuxin Oral Liquid (SX). Cure and effective rates in both groups were evaluated. Frequency and duration of angina attack were counted and measured. Coronary angiography (CAG), electrocardiogram (ECG) and flat exercise test were taken in both groups. Blood lipid indexes, such as cholesterol (CH), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), were determined at pre- and post-treatment. The hemodynamic indexes, such as whole blood viscosity (J2), high-shear reduced viscosity (Eh), low-shear reduced viscosity (Ei), red cell aggregation index (Lb), red cell rigidity index (Rh), fibrinogen (Fb), blood sedimentation rate (BSR) and hematocrit (HCT), were determined at pre-and post-treatment. The indicated scores of symptoms and signs of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pattern, such as chest pain, chest constriction, breath shortness, palpitation, fatigue, dim complexion, spontaneous perspiration and tongue proper, tongue coating were evaluated in week 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 during the treatment course. The safety indexes, such as body temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure were observed. Routine tests of blood, urine and stool, hepatic function test and renal function test were taken at pre- and post-treatment. Results: There was no significant difference between the total effective rate of the trial group and that of the control group, which were 91.82% and 85.32%, respectively (P>0.05). Trial group's percentile of cure rate is significantly higher than that of the control group (P<0.01). The frequency and duration of angina attack, the positive ratio of CAG and flat exercise test of both groups were lowered, while the effect of the trial group on frequency and duration of angina attack was better. No significant difference was found in ECG features between the two groups (P>0.05). The levels of CH, TG and LDL of both groups were lowered significantly (P<0.05). The effect of lowering CH, TG and LDL of the trial group was stronger than that of the control group (P<0.05). Optimal solvers for fourth-order PDEs discretized on unstructured grids

Abstract: This paper provides the first provable $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ algorithms for the linear system arising from the direct finite element discretization of the fourth-order equation with different boundary conditions on unstructured grids of size $N$ on an arbitrary polygoanl domain. Several preconditioners are presented, and the conjugate gradient methods applied with these preconditioners are proven to converge uniformly with respect to the size of the preconditioned linear system. One main ingredient of the optimal preconditioners is a mixed-form discretization of the fourth-order problem. Such a mixed-form discretization leads to a non-desirable ---either non-optimal or non-convergent--- approximation of the original solution, but it provides optimal preconditioners for the direct finite element problem. It is further shown that the implementation of the preconditioners can be reduced to the solution of several discrete Poisson equations. Therefore, any existing optimal or nearly optimal solver, such as geometric or algebraic multigrid methods, for Poisson equations would lead to a nearly optimal solver for the discrete fourth-order system. A number of nonstandard Sobolev spaces and their discretizations defined on the boundary of polygonal domains are carefully studied and used for the analysis of those preconditioners.

Abstract:

Based on the Newton’s law of motion, the motion equation of the microscopic car-following model is introduced. The moving vehicles comply with the idea of Newton's equations of motion. But the interaction between vehicles is different from their traction. The inertia of the car is not its mass. We discuss the differences and present how to treat them. This article can deepen and widen the students' understanding of Newton's laws of motion. It can also provide the materials for university physical teaching. It is suitable for the students to exploratory study.

Research on the Impact of Internet Finance on the Efficiency of Chinese Commercial Banks  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper selects 15 Chinese commercial banks as the research sample, using stochastic frontier approach, setting Trans-log Production Function. The paper firstly measures the efficiency of commercial banks, and the results show that the efficiency level of Chinese commercial banks is on the rise from 2007 to 2016, and the efficiency of state-owned banks is higher than that of joint-stock banks. Secondly, the paper studies the influence factors of the efficiency of Chinese commercial banks in the view of banks own factors, industry factors, Internet financial development factors. The results show that the non-performing loan ratio level and the Internet financial development are negatively related to the bank efficiency, and competition of market is positively associated with the bank efficiency, and the structure of property rights will also significantly affect the performance of commercial banks.
