Reliability of Power Spectral Analysis of Surface Electromyogram Recorded during Sustained Vastus Medialis Isometric Contraction in Assessment of Muscle Fatigability  [PDF]

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the within-day and between-days reliability of surface electromyographic (EMG) power spectral analysis in assessing fatigability of the vastus medialis (VM) muscle during knee and hip flexion under constant load application. The subjects were 13 healthy adult men free of knee abnormalities. Surface EMG was recorded from vastus medialis obliquus (VMO) and vastus medialis longus (VML) during sustained isometric contractions at 60% of maximal voluntary contraction until exhaustion on the leg press machine (static leg press test). Linear regression analysis was applied to median frequency (MF) time series to calculate initial MF and MF slope. For VMO and VML, the initial MF showed moderate to high reliability, while the MF slope showed high reliability (Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = initial MF: 0.63 - 0.92, MF slope: 0.70 - 0.86). The results demonstrated that spectral analysis of surface EMG recording during isometric VM muscle contraction has high within-day and between-days reliability in the assessment of fatigability of the VMO and VML.
Choosing Wisely and Sharing Cost: A Multi-Bidding Cost Sharing Mechanism  [PDF]

We consider a situation where agents have to choose one project among the set of multiple alternatives and at the same time they have to agree with the way of sharing the cost of the project that is actually developed. We propose a multi-bidding cost sharing mechanism where each agent simultaneously announces his voluntary contribution for each project when the project is actually carried out, in combination with his vote for the projects. We show that a Nash equilibrium exists in this mechanism, and in any Nash equilibrium of this mechanism, the efficient project is always chosen. Moreover, in the Nash equilibrium, the way of sharing the cost of the project is, in a sense, an equal sharing rule.

Abstract: The ants are one of the mega diverse insets found in all terrestrial environments, and occur in great diversity, richness and abundance, acting at all trophic levels. The present study was conducted to verify the knowledge of ant fauna at Caxiuan? National forest. All available ant literature and some collection in Caxiuan? were compiled and analyzed in EXCEL program. Caxiuan? is one Brazilian Amazonia forest that has good biological conservation. A total of 197 species belonging to 52 genera of the nine subfamilies are present in Caxiuan?. Many studies need to be done in this place to understand the ant community pattern to give base for other studies and proposal for use, management and conservation of this interesting Amazonia place.

Bacteria, like industrial engineers, must manage processes that convert low value inputs into high value outputs. Bacteria are not intelligent, so they utilize self-organizing production systems to accelerate life-sustaining chemical processes. Here I explore two questions. First, can businesses apply the principles of self-organization? Second, can operations researchers contribute to our understanding of biological systems? I explain biochemical concepts in plain terms, illustrated with a few informative laboratory evolution experiments, and describe the organizing principles that underlie complex biological systems. I describe the new disciplines of synthetic biology and metabolic engineering, which offer opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration between life scientists and operations researchers.

Zipf Law in Firms Bankruptcy

Abstract: Using an exhaustive list of Japanese bankruptcy in 1997, we discover a Zipf law for the distribution of total liabilities of bankrupted firms in high debt range. The life-time of these bankrupted firms has exponential distribution in correlation with entry rate of new firms. We also show that the debt and size are highly correlated, so the Zipf law holds consistently with that for size distribution. In attempt to understand ``physics'' of bankruptcy, we show that a model of debtor-creditor dynamics of firms and a bank, recently proposed by economists, can reproduce these phenomenological findings.
Visualizing a large-scale structure of production network by N-body simulation

Abstract: Our recent study of a nation-wide production network uncovered a community structure, namely how firms are connected by supplier-customer links into tightly-knit groups with high density in intra-groups and with lower connectivity in inter-groups. Here we propose a method to visualize the community structure by a graph layout based on a physical analogy. The layout can be calculated in a practical computation-time and is possible to be accelerated by a special-purpose device of GRAPE (gravity pipeline) developed for astrophysical N-body simulation. We show that the method successfully identifies the communities in a hierarchical way by applying it to the manufacturing sector comprising tenth million nodes and a half million edges. In addition, we discuss several limitations of this method, and propose a possible way to avoid all those problems.
Effects of eszopiclone on safety, subjective measures of efficacy, and quality of life in elderly and nonelderly Japanese patients with chronic insomnia, both with and without comorbid psychiatric disorders: a 24-week, randomized, double-blind study

Abstract: Patients (n?=?164 elderly; n?=?161 nonelderly), with or without psychiatric comorbidities, were randomized to receive low-dose (1?mg, elderly; 2?mg, nonelderly) or high-dose (2?mg, elderly; 3?mg, nonelderly) eszopiclone. The safety evaluation included adverse events, vital signs, clinical laboratory parameters, and electrocardiogram. Efficacy was assessed using patient reports of sleep latency (SL), total sleep time (TST), wake time after sleep onset (WASO), number of awakenings (NA), quality of sleep, depth of sleep, daytime sleepiness, daytime ability to function, and the 36-item Short Form (SF-36) Health Survey.The rate of adverse events was 81.5% in the 1-mg elderly group, 79.5% in the 2-mg elderly group, 82.1% in the 2-mg nonelderly group, and 87.0% in the 3-mg nonelderly group. Dysgeusia was the most common adverse event and was dose-related. Of 12 serious adverse events, none were considered by the investigator to be related to study medication. No rebound insomnia was observed. Eszopiclone significantly improved SL, TST, WASO, NA, and daytime sleepiness and function from baseline to Week 4, irrespective of age and psychiatric comorbidity. Improvements were also observed in SF-36 Mental Health Component scores in elderly and nonelderly patients with psychiatric comorbidities.Irrespective of age, eszopiclone appeared safe as administered in this study for 24?weeks. New Neumerical Method to Calculate Time-Dependent Quantum Properties in Finite Temperature Based on the Heisenberg Equation of Motion  [PDF]

Abstract: For the purpose of computer calculation to evaluate time-dependent quantum properties in finite temperature, we propose new numerical method expressed in the forms of simultaneous differential equations. At first we derive the equation of motion in finite temperature, which is found to be same expression as Heisenberg equation of motion except for the c-number. Based on this equation, we construct numerical method to estimate time-dependent physical properties in finite temperature precisely without using analytical procedures such as Keldysh formalism. Since our approach is so simple and is based on the simultaneous differential equations including no terms related to self-energies, computer programming can be easily performed. It is possible to estimate exact time-dependent physical properties, providing that Hamiltonian of the system is taken to be a one-electron picture. Furthermore, we refer to the application to the many body problem and it is numerically possible to calculate physical properties using Hartree Fock approximation. Our numerical method can be applied to the case even when perturbative Hamiltonians are newly introduced or Hamiltonian shows complex time-dependent behavior. In this article, at first, we derive the equation of motion in finite temperature. Secondly, for the purpose of verification and of exhibiting the usefulness, we show the derivation of gap equation of superconductivity and of sum rule of electrical conductivity and the application to the many body problem. Finally we apply this method to these two cases: the first case is most simplified resonance charge transfer neutralization of an ion and the second is the same process but impurity potential is newly introduced as perturbative Hamiltonian. Through both cases, it is found that neutralization process is not so sensitive to temperature, however, impurity potential as small as 10 meV strongly influences the neutralization of ion.
Exchange Rate and Current Account Dynamics with Habits over Consumption and Money Holdings  [PDF]

Incorporating two independent habits over consumption and money holdings into a small country model, we examine the adjustment dynamics of the current account and the exchange rate to expansionary monetary and fiscal shocks under two alternative policy regimes: (1) the endogenous income transfer regime; and (2) the endogenous fiscal spending regime. In response to the shocks under regime (1), the exchange rate depreciates on impact and in the long run whereas it appreciates (depreciates) in transition if preferences for real money balances exhibit distant (adjacent) complementarity. Under regime (2), the consumption habits and the monetary habits jointly generate possibly non-monotonic current account dynamics. An induced increase in fiscal spending in regime (2) can generate a current account surplus in the case where the monetary habits exhibit strong distant complementarity.
