Actual Costs of Uneconomic Growth of Marine Fisheries in China’s Pearl River Delta  [PDF]

Abstract: As traditional economic theory is mainly based on neoliberal principles, whose failure is to ignore the ecological component in value assessment methods, it assumes that continuous economic growth exists with high level of employment and low inflation rate. Many ecological economists have criticized the blind pursuit of short-term economic interests in the last 30 years for leading to loss of natural capital and ecosystem services. This study demonstrates the concept of?uneconomic growth?by measuring the actual costs of fishing activities and fishery policy implemented in China’s Pearl River Estuary from economic, social, and ecological aspects. The results show that the costs of economic growth exceed the benefits of additional growth because of the limits of the ecosystem. The ecological system of the Pearl River Estuary has been degraded significantly by overfishing and is regarded to be under non-optimal conditions regarding both ecological and socio-economic objectives.
Economic Value Added, Corporation Growth and Overinvestment—Based on State-Owned Corporations  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper analyzes if EVA (Economic Value Added) evaluation system can reduce the corporations’ overinvestment phenomenon by using the study sample of 204 listed SOEs (state-owned corporations) with the sample period from 2007 to 2012. Then according to Tobin’s Q value, we divided all the 204 listed SOEs into two groups, high growth corporations and low growth corporations, and observed if the implementation of EVA has different inhibition effect on the listed SOEs of different growth. The results indicated that EVA can’t significantly reduce the listed SOEs’ overinvestment, but it has different inhibition effect on different growth corporations. The EVA can significantly reduce low growth listed SOEs’ overinvestment, which suggests the EVA evaluation system can improve low growth corporations’ investment situation.
Neural Network Based Missing Feature Method For Text-Independent Speaker Identification  [PDF]

Abstract: The first step of missing feature methods in text-independent speaker identification is to identify highly corrupted spectrographic representation of speech as missing feature. Most mask estimation techniques rely on explicit estimation of the characteristics of the corrupting noise and usually fail to work with inaccurate estimation of noise. We present a mask estimation technique that uses neural networks to determine the reliability of spectrographic elements. Without any prior knowledge of the noise or prior probability of speech, this method exploits only the characteristics of the speech signal. Experiments were performed on speech corrupted by stationary F16 noise and non-stationary Babble noise from 5dB to 20 dB separately, using cluster based reconstruction missing feature method. The result performs better recognition accuracy than conventional spectral subtraction mask estimation methods.
The Role of the Composition of the Human Capital on the Economic Growth: With the Spatial Effect among Provinces in China  [PDF]

Abstract: Based on the data of China’s 28 provinces and regions during 1987-2007, this paper is trying to explore the role of the composition of the human capital on the economic growth with the spatial effect among provinces. The results indicate that there are significant spatial effects of human capital and economic growth in China; there is a significant positive correlation between the GDP per capita and the average schooling years; when the education of human capital is divided into primary education, secondary education and higher education, only the higher education and the primary education show significantly positive correlation with the GDP per capita.

Abstract: Psychological well-being (PWB) is a concept different from subjective well-being in positive psychology. PWB is conceptualized as a construct which includes the happy emotional experience and the realization of individual potential. This paper assumes that employee’s core self-evaluation and their perceived organizational support have a positive effect on psychological well-being. The result based on 441 valid questionnaires supports our hypothesis that employee’s core self-evaluation and their perceived organizational support are positively related to their reported psychological well-being. Core self-evaluation is also found to moderate the association of perceived organizational support with PWB in such that POS is more strongly related to PWB for employees who are higher, compared with those lower in CSE.
Education, Human Capital and Economic Growth: Empirical Research on 55 Countries and Regions (1960-2009)  [PDF]

Abstract: This article constructed a panel data model to investigate the effect of education human capital on economic growth, using the latest education data of 55 countries and regions from 1960 to 2009. Meantime, by subdividing education human capital into higher education, secondary education and primary education, it also examines the effect of different education level on economic growth. Furthermore, while introducing health human capital into the model, we explored the influence of different economic development level and some important historical events. The result shows that in general, education human capital has a significant positive impact on economic growth. The positive impact of higher education on economic growth is especially significant, however, the primary education and secondary education does not have a significant impact on economic growth; as for human capital, life expectancy and per capita GDP growth also showed a significant positive correlation.
Organizational Silence in State-Owned Enterprises: Intermediary Role of the Perceptions of Organizational Politics  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper aims to explore how the employees’ organizational silence and perception of organizational politics play an intermediary role in the process of generating the organizational silence in the state-owned enterprises with specific organizational climate and environment. Using 563 samples from state-owned enterprises, a linear structure equation model (SEM) is developed to examine the relationship. The research results show that the leader-member exchange has significant negative correlation with organizational silence and that the leader-member exchange has significant negative correlation with perception of organizational politics. In addition, the perception of organizational politics partially plays an intermediary role in the formation mechanism of organizational silence. Finally, the countermeasures and proposals are put forward to reduce the organizational silence of employees in the state-owned enterprises.
Analysis of Landscape Patterns and the Trend of Forest Resources in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, first, based on landscape ecology theories, we respectively selected indexes from 4 aspects, area, edge, shape, and density, of the landscape type to describe the status of forest landscape patterns, and we established the stability index of landscape pattern (LSBI). Then, based on geo-statistical theories, we divided the forest in the reservoir area into 3990 grids of 4 km × 4 km using network technology and employing ordinary Kriging modelling to make trend surface analyses of the forest resources in the reservoir area. Finally, based on statistics principles, we used sampling theory to systematically extract 227 samples to obtain 7 periods of remote-sensing data from 1990a to 2012a. Then, we classified and extracted the forest in the sampling area using remote sensing, and we analysed each result with an Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model (ARIMA) time-series model. The results indicated the following: 1) the landscape structure of the reservoir area was primarily needle-leaved forest, broad-leaved forest and bush forest, and the mixed stands and bamboo stands were secondary; 2) the difference of the forest landscape pattern stability in the reservoir area, in all directions, was not significant, but the southern region was slightly more stable; and 3) the stability of the forest landscape pattern in the reservoir area increased from 1990a to 2012a. It kept increasing until 2016a. This study provides a theoretical basis for the reasonable management and decisions about the forest resources in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. Meanwhile, it also explores methods for relevant research and has practical significance.

Abstract: Hornik, Stinchcombe & White have shown that the multilayer feed forward networks with enough hidden layers are universal approximators. Roux & Bengio have proved that adding hidden units yield a strictly improved modeling power, and Restricted Boltzmann Machines (RBM) are universal approximators of discrete distributions. In this paper, we provide yet another proof. The advantage of this new proof is that it will lead to several new learning algorithms. We prove that the Deep Neural Networks implement an expansion and the expansion is complete. First, we briefly review the basic Boltzmann Machine and that the invariant distributions of the Boltzmann Machine generate Markov chains. We then review the θ-transformation and its completeness, i.e. any function can be expanded by θ-transformation. We further review ABM (Attrasoft Boltzmann Machine). The invariant distribution of the ABM is a θ-transformation; therefore, an ABM can simulate any distribution. We discuss how to convert an ABM into a Deep Neural Network. Finally, by establishing the equivalence between an ABM and the Deep Neural Network, we prove that the Deep Neural Network is complete.
