Notes on Reed-Muller Codes

Abstract: In this paper, we consider the Reed-Muller (RM) codes. For the first order RM code, we prove that it is unique in the sense that any linear code with the same length, dimension and minimum distance must be the first order RM code; For the second order RM code, we give a constructive linear sub-code family for the case when m is even. This is an extension of Corollary 17 of Ch. 15 in the coding book by MacWilliams and Sloane. Furthermore, we show that the specified sub-codes of length <= 256 have minimum distance equal to the upper bound or the best known lower bound for all linear codes of the same length and dimension. As another interesting result, we derive an additive commutative group of the symplectic matrices with full rank.

Abstract: We have proposed the concept of the cultural quality-oriented education for university in China, aiming at “improving the students’ aesthetic taste, cultural taste, humanistic quality and scientific quality through strengthening education on the subjects of literature, history, philosophy, arts and other humanities and social science and natural science in university”. However, some colleges and universities tend to be utilitarian with knowledge-based and technique-based status in practice. They use the training mode of one-sided pursuit of employment, and neglect the development of the humanistic spirit. The curriculum is unable to adapt to the actual needs of students of different specialties, and the implementing effect of the cultural quality-oriented courses is below expectation. Only by surpassing this predicament can the cultural quality-oriented education in university be promoted on the inheritance and innovation fruitfully. Under the new situation, the specific path of the cultural quality-oriented education in university should be mainly paved in the curriculum setting, teaching management, learning selection and student evaluation.

How International Trade Affects the Spatial Pattern of China’s Economic Activities?  [PDF]

This paper has analyzed the impact of international trade mechanisms to spatial economic structure, panel data 2001-2016 China’s 30 provinces, and factors which affect Chinese economic structure of empirical research on trade openness, and found that, on the whole, trade openness has no significant direct effect on China’s economic spatial pattern, and indirectly promotes policy advantages to make economic activities more spatially agglomerate, and to make economic activities more dispersed by promoting transportation infrastructure. From the perspective of the East, Central and West regions, the trade openness directly promotes the agglomeration of the East and West regions. The regional policy advantage is the main mechanism affecting the regional economic agglomeration. The human capital mechanism and the transportation infrastructure mechanism in the eastern region respectively make dispersal and agglomeration; the transportation infrastructure in the central part makes the space more dispersed; the human capital mechanism and the transportation infrastructure mechanism in the western region respectively make the space agglomerate and decentralized. Local governments should strengthen regional cooperation and formulate differentiated trade policies to lead regional industries to drive regional innovation.
Nanoscale potassium niobate crystal structure and phase transition

Abstract: Nanoscale potassium niobate (KNbO3) powders of orthorhombic structure were synthesized using the sol-gel method. The heat-treatment temperature of the gels had a pronounced effect on KNbO3 particle size and morphology. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy were used to determine particle size and morphology. The average KNbO3 grain size was estimated to be less than 100 nm, and transmission electron microscopy images indicated that KNbO3 particles had a brick-like morphology. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction was used to identify the room-temperature structures using Rietveld refinement. The ferroelectric orthorhombic phase was retained even for particles smaller than 50 nm. The orthorhombic to tetragonal and tetragonal to cubic phase transitions of nanocrystalline KNbO3 were investigated using temperature-dependent powder X-ray diffraction. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to examine the temperature dependence of KNbO3 phase transition. The Curie temperature and phase transition were independent of particle size, and Rietveld analyses showed increasing distortions with decreasing particle size.
Individual Secrecy for the Broadcast Channel

Abstract: This paper studies the problem of secure communication over broadcast channels under the individual secrecy constraints. That is, the transmitter wants to send two independent messages to two legitimate receivers in the presence of an eavesdropper, while keeping the eavesdropper ignorant of each message (i.e., the information leakage from each message to the eavesdropper is made vanishing). Building upon Carleial-Hellman's secrecy coding, Wyner's secrecy coding, the frameworks of superposition coding and Marton's coding together with techniques such as rate splitting and indirect decoding, achievable rate regions are developed. The proposed regions are compared with those satisfying joint secrecy and without secrecy constraints, and the individual secrecy capacity regions for special cases are characterized. In particular, capacity region for the deterministic case is established, and for the Gaussian model, a constant gap (i.e., 0.5 bits within the individual secrecy capacity region) result is obtained. Overall, when compared with the joint secrecy constraint, the results allow for trading-off secrecy level and throughput in the system.
Individual secrecy for broadcast channels with receiver side information

Abstract: This paper studies the problem of secure communication over the broadcast channel with receiver side information under the lens of individual secrecy constraints. That is, the transmitter wants to send two independent messages to two receivers which have, respectively, the desired message of the other receiver as side information, while keeping the eavesdropper ignorant of each message (i.e., the information leakage from each message to the eavesdropper is made vanishing). Building upon one-time pad, secrecy coding, and broadcasting schemes, achievable rate regions are investigated, and the capacity region for special cases of either a weak or strong eavesdropper (compared to both legitimate receivers) are characterized. Interestingly, the capacity region for the former corresponds to a line and the latter corresponds to a square with missing corners; a phenomenon occurring due to the coupling between user's rates. Moreover, the individual secrecy capacity region is also fully characterized for the case where the eavesdropper's channel is deterministic. In addition to discrete memoryless setup, Gaussian scenarios are studied. For the Gaussian model, in addition to the strong and weak eavesdropper cases, the capacity region is characterized for the low and high SNR regimes when the eavesdropper's channel is stronger than one receiver but weaker than the other. Remarkably, positive secure transmission rates are always guaranteed under the individual secrecy constraint, unlike the case of the joint secrecy constraint (i.e., the information leakage from both messages to the eavesdropper is made vanishing). Thus, this notion of secrecy serves as an appropriate candidate for trading off secrecy level and transmission rate; making secrecy more affordable but still acceptable to the end user.
Characterization of a novel bifunctional mutant of staphylokinase with platelet-targeted thrombolysis and antiplatelet aggregation activities

Abstract: By using site-directed mutagenesis, an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) motif was engineered in the staphylokinase (SAK). This mutant of SAK designated RGD-SAK was expressed, purified and characterized. Biochemical analysis indicated that RGD-SAK maintained the similar structure and the fibrinolytic function of SAK. Measurement of platelet binding activity in vitro demonstrated that RGD-SAK had a much higher affinity with platelets than SAK. In vitro platelet-rich clot lysis assay demonstrated that the engineered mutant outperformed the non-manipulated SAK. The time required for 50% platelet-rich clot lysis and the concentration required to obtain 50% clot lysis (C50) were reduced significantly across different concentrations of RGD-SAK comparing with SAK. Meanwhile, RGD-SAK was found to inhibit ADP-induced platelet aggregation in a concentration-dependent manner while SAK had negligible effect on platelet aggregation.RGD-SAK possessed the bifunction to target platelet-rich clots and to block platelets aggregation, and thus may serve as a more potential thrombolytic agent with platelet-targeted thrombolytic and antiplatelet aggregation activities in compared with SAK.Acute myocardial infarction is among the most prominent causes of death in the Western world. It is commonly caused by the formation of a pathologic clot that results in obstructing the blood flow to heart tissues. Staphylokinase (SAK), a 136-amino acid protein from certain lysogenic Staphylococcus aureus strains, is a plasminogen activator and a promising blood clot-dissolving agent with clinical potency that is at least as good as tPA [1,2]. SAK does not bind directly to fibrin, it can bind indirectly through the fibrin binding of plasmin(ogen) by forming a 1:1 stoichiometric SAK-plasmin(ogen) complex. The resulting SAK-plasmin complex can then function as the plasminogen activator to convert plasminogen to plasmin for clot lysis [3].
