Is Nationalism Crucial in China-US Relations?
—Evidence from a Comparative Analysis

Abstract: Due to China’s assertive diplomacy in maritime space, nationalism, de-scribed as an element of a “newly assertive China”, arouses concern among Americans. With Donald Trump, who caters to both the far left and the far right, becoming the 45th US president, China-US relations have entered a period of historic uncertainty. There has been speculation that nationalism is rising in both China and the United States, which will have a profound effect on bilateral relations. Does nationalism play an essential role in China-US relations? In order to respond to this question, this essay explains the different meanings of democracy in China and the United States, and then analyzes these two different kinds of democracy how to influence the nationalism of those two countries. This essay also clarifies the relationship between nationalism and interests. We can find that international politics is inseparable from domestic politics. China’s nationalism tends to be a political appeal from top leaders to the public, which can be guided by power. Although Chinese nationalism may play a small role in bilateral diplomatic activities, Chinese foreign policy is interest-oriented. By comparison, checks and balances are a cornerstone of the power structure in America. Even with “uncertain Trump” as the leader of America, policy making in the US will not materially change a lot. Thus, we find that interests, China’s party-state system, checks and balances in America make both sides prudent and rational, and nationalism cannot play a decisive role in China-US relations.

Coordination of a Supply Chain with Advertising Investment and Allowing the Second Ordering  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper develops a game theoretic model of a one-manufacturer and one-retailer supply chain allowing the second ordering to investigate how to coordinate the order quantity and advertising investment via a markdown money-cooperative advertising contract. We focus on the effects of allowing the second ordering on equilibrium outcome and coordination mechanism. We find: the relationship between the unit wholesale prices and the chargeback rate depends on whether allowing the second ordering; the coordination mechanism is robust to demand uncertainty; the unit wholesale price in period 2 increases with the unit production cost in period 2, the unit delayed delivery cost and unit salvage value if and only if the chargeback rate is sufficiently small while that in period 1 is independent of them. In addition, we study the Pareto condition of coordination mechanism under which both manufacturer and retailer are better off using the coordination mechanism and find that the unit production costs in different periods may have contrary effects on the bounds of Pareto range.

Abstract: In Synergetics, when a complex system evolves from one sate to another, the order parameter plays a dominant role. We can analyze the complex system state by studying the dynamic of order parameter. We developed a synergetic model of electricity market operation system, and studied the dynamic process of the system with empirical example, which revealed the internal mechanism of the system evolution. In order to verify the accuracy of the synergetic model, fourth-order Runge-Kutta algorithm and grey relevance method were used. Finally, we found that the reserve rate of generation was the order parameter of the system. Then we can use the principle of Synergetics to evaluate the efficiency of electricity market operation.

Abstract:

The hollowing-out degree of American local manufacturing enterprises has reached a rather high level due to the long-term off-shoring of the industries to other developing countries. Some U.S. companies started to show intentions to move their manufacturing back home—a strategy known as “re-shoring” since 2010. The re-shoring behavior in U.S. manufacturing has triggered much concern about U.S. Manufacturing Rebuilding. This article analyzes the key factors that may influence U.S. companies’ re-shoring strategies. In the empirical part, regression formula is established to evaluate those potential influence factors and verify their significance.

Effect of Ethanol Extract of Venenum Bufonis on Biofilm Formation of Staphylococcus aureus  [PDF]

Abstract: Ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis has shown many valuable bioactivities, but little is known about its effect on biofilm formation of Staphylococcus aureus. In this study, biofilm formation of S. aureus NCTC8325 with or without ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis was tested using microtitre plate assay and Confocal Laser Scanning Microscope (CLSM) system. Results show that the biofilm formation of S. aureus with ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis was significantly lower than that of the control group without ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis. Meanwhile, the reduction degree was correlated to the concentration of ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis positively. With CLSM system we can observe that looser and less biomass of the biofilm structure of the experimental group appeared than that of the control group. These results suggested that ethanol extract of Venenum Bufonis has inhibitory effect on biofilm formation of S. aureus.

Abstract:
As the artificial intelligence industry is increasingly showing irreplaceable importance in people’s production and life, the smart home furnishing industry, which belongs to the field of artificial intelligence, has become a new industry attracting great attention. Smart home furnishing enterprises are enterprises with strong requirements for innovation, whose products are mostly dependent on a large amount of R&D investment to maintain their core competitiveness. However, the smart home industry started late in China, which has problems such as insufficient market development and disordered industry standards. In order to improve the performance of innovation, enterprises need to increase their investment in R&D, while a relatively stable environment is needed, and external support is relatively loose policies. This requires cooperation from companies, investors, governments and so on. This study will start from the current situation of the smart home industry, study different factors affecting the innovation performance of the R&D investment of smart home enterprises, and put forward suggestions from different perspectives.
HoughFeature, a novel method for assessing drug effects in three-color cDNA microarray experiments

Abstract: Based on the celebrated Hough transform, a novel algorithm, HoughFeature, is proposed to extract line features in the hexaMplot corresponding to different drug effects. Drug therapy results can then be divided into a number of levels in relation to different groups of genes. We apply the framework to experimental microarray data to assess the complex effects of Rg1 (an extract of Chinese medicine) on Hcy-related HUVECs in details. Differentially expressed genes are classified into 15 functional groups corresponding to different levels of drug effects.Our study shows that the HoughFeature algorithm can reveal natural cluster patterns in gene expression data of normal-disease-drug samples. It provides both qualitative and quantitative information about up- or down-regulated genes. The methodology can be employed to predict disease susceptibility in gene therapy and assess drug effects on the disease based on three-color microarray data.Microarray experiments can produce expression data of thousands of genes simultaneously. They are useful for disease diagnosis, prognosis and treatment planning as well as the discovery and development of novel pharmaceutical products [1-11]. However, these experiments, which commonly use two colors, are costly and time-consuming, thus there is a need to improve the technology. By adding blue Alexa 594 as a dye-label, a three-color microarray experiment can be carried out. According to recent experimental and statistical analysis, there is no evidence that the inclusion of Alexa594 as the third dye-label causes additional noise or unexpected results in the data [12,13]. Abstract: Recent research has demonstrated that surface electromyography (sEMG) signals have non-Gaussianity and non-linearity properties. It is known that more muscle motor units are recruited and firing rates (FRs) increase as exertion increases. A hypothesis was proposed that the Gaussianity test (S g) and linearity test (S ) levels of sEMG signals are associated with the number of active motor units (nMUs) and the FR. The hypothesis has only been preliminarily discussed in experimental studies. We used a simulation sEMG model involving spatial (active MUs) and temporal (three FRs) information to test the hypothesis. Higher-order statistics (HOS) from the bi-frequency domain were used to perform S g and S . Multivariate covariance analysis and a correlation test were employed to determine the nMUs-S g relationship and the nMUs-S relationship. Results showed that nMUs, the FR, and the interaction of nMUs and the FR all influenced the S g and S values. The nMUs negatively correlated to both the S g and S values. That is, at the three FRs, sEMG signals tended to a more Gaussian and linear distribution as exertion and nMUs increased. The study limited experiment factors to the sEMG non-Gaussianity and non-linearity levels. The study quantitatively described nMUs and the FR of muscle that are not directly available from experiments. Our finding has guiding significance for muscle capability assessment and prosthetic control.
