Pedagogical and Design Aspects of a Blended Learning Course
Karen Precel, Yoram Eshet-Alkalai, Yael Alberton
International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning , 2009,
Abstract: Based on recent research reports, the blended learning model, which combines face-to-face and online learning, is now the preferred model for online course design. Its superiority over online learning, which lacks face-to-face interaction, is evident from studies that examined both student achievement and satisfaction. Nevertheless, there is ambiguity in the literature and in the field regarding the proper implementation of blended learning and the optimal proportions between online and F2F components in various learning scenarios. The range of contradictory reports in recent literature on the potential of different blended learning models shows the need for more research on specific blended learning courses in order to establish proper standards for effective course design and implementation. The present evaluation study focuses on students’ perceptions of pedagogical and design issues related to a new model for blended learning used in a graduate-level course at the Open University of Israel. Fifty-eight of the course’s 91 students participated in the study and completed a questionnaire regarding three major aspects of the course design: (1) pedagogy, (2) textbook format (print vs. digital), and (3) learning environment usability. The results illustrate the importance of completing the pedagogical and visual design of online learning in advance. Also, the course model suggests ways to bridge the gaps between students and instructors and students and their peers, which are typical of online learning in general and of open universities in particular.
Policidadania: forma o mistagógica do docente
Elcio Alberton
Roteiro , 2010,
Modeling Multi-Echelon Multi-Supplier Repairable Inventory Systems with Backorders  [PDF]
Yael Perlman, Ilya Levner
Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2010, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2010.34050
Abstract: This paper considers an inventory system responsible for repairable equipments located at several operational sites, each in different area. When a failure occurs at the operational site, spare parts are required. We analyze a multiple-supplier inventory system that includes an internal repair shop that offers several modes of repair with different repair times and an external supplier of spare parts. The network model of the problem presented here efficiently solves the problem for deterministic demands that vary over time with backorders taken into account.
Perishable Inventory Management in Healthcare  [PDF]
Yael Perlman, Ilya Levner
Journal of Service Science and Management (JSSM) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/jssm.2014.71002
Abstract:

This study addresses a problem encountered in a nation-wide, large-scale healthcare supply chain that comprises several hundred medical organizations (hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, etc.) and provides highly advanced medical care to several million people. The medical products in the system are perishable, meaning that they become unusable beyond a certain expiry date. It is necessary to track the ages of units in stock and to plan and control the inventory accordingly. The models developed herein represent a multi-echelon, multi-supplier inventory system and unite together aspects of perishability and outsourcing under deterministic demand for medical products, which include both perishable and deteriorating goods. The objective of the study is to determine the optimal number of products to be purchased from regular and outsource suppliers so as to meet the required demand at the minimum operating cost. The solution is a network-flow model that can be used to determine the trade-off between the quantities of items to be ordered from the two types of suppliers in each time period. In addition, the study analyzes different distribution policies to account for the perishable nature of the products. Further insights are obtained by applying the model to a case study of a real-life healthcare supply chain from which interesting results are drawn.

?RE/POSICIóN? DE "TRES MARíAS Y UNA ROSA": TRES DéCADAS PARA A/BORDAR LA RESISTENCIA
Zaliasnik,Yael;
Revista chilena de literatura , 2010, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-22952010000200010
Abstract: the present work explores the conditions and repercussions of staging anew an emblematic play of the dictatorship era in chile: ?tres marías y una rosa,? three decades after that period, and without significant modifications. in the words of raymond williams, what?s the residual, the dominant, the emergent? what is won/lost in this re-staging? how is it perceived (?read?)? are there still residual social images from the dictatorship? what did the play represent 30 years ago, and has that changed today? inevitably, these questions lead us to the issue of the chilean textile craft of the ?arpilleras? and the women artisans who made these (?arpilleristas?), to our understanding, central to the play, but avoided and forgotten as a resistance movement, as it is not treated in depth in its current staging.

The present work explores the conditions and repercussions of staging anew an emblematic play of the dictatorship era in Chile: “Tres Marías y una Rosa,” three decades after that period, and without significant modifications. In the words of Raymond Williams, what’s the residual, the dominant, the emergent? What is won/lost in this re-staging? How is it perceived (“read”)? Are there still residual social images from the dictatorship? What did the play represent 30 years ago, and has that changed today? Inevitably, these questions lead us to the issue of the Chilean textile craft of the “arpilleras” and the women artisans who made these (“arpilleristas”), to our understanding, central to the play, but avoided and forgotten as a resistance movement, as it is not treated in depth in its current staging.
“Dreamers Often Lie”: On “Compromise”, the subversive documentation of an Israeli- Palestinian political adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet
Yael Munk
Altre Modernità , 2010,
Abstract: Is Romeo and Juliet relevant to a description of the Middle-East conflict? This is the question raised in Compromise, an Israeli documentary that follows the Jerusalem Khan Theater's production of the play in the mid-1990's. This paper describes how the cinematic documentation of a theatrical Shakespeare production can undermine the original intentions of its creators. This staging of the play was carefully planned in order to demonstrate to the country and the world that Israelis and Palestinians are willing to search for a peaceful solution in the Middle East: Two directors - Israeli -Eran Baniel and Palestinian Fuad Awad - co-directed both Israeli and Palestinian actors, using both languages: Arabic and Hebrew. This seemingly balanced solution was acclaimed on European television but for Israeli director Even, this was only a fa ade. Following backstage situation, Compromise reveals the truth behind the mask in order to denounce the manipulative use of what Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben defines as state of emergency, which is the hegemonic mechanism that deprives people of the elementary civil rights. Questioning the issue of co-existence against the political background of the 1990's (including bomb attacks and the signing of the Camp David Treaty in 1993), the film plays on the discrepancy between the denouement of Romeo and Juliet and the unsolvable situation in which people in the Middle-East - amongst them the actors themselves- are condemned to live.
Déplacement du mythe du Sabra The Displacement of the Sabra Myth: on Amos Gitai’s Cinematographic Adaptation of Ya’akov Shabtai’s Past Continuous : " "

This article engages with Amos Gitai’s personal interpretation of Ya’akov Shabtai’s novel, Past Continuous (Zikhron Dvarim). For many years no one had dared to adapt this most modernistic novel to the screen, until filmmaker Gitai decided that his return to Israel after almost ten years in France should be announced by means of this ambitious project. A number of artistic decisions made Dvarim a remarkable film, in which the filmmaker entertains a dialogue with the image of the Sabra, with whom Shabtai was associated, and with his own biography. Although the age difference between Shabtai and Gitai dictated a major change in the narrative background, it also contributed to the establishment of a parallelism between two identity crises in Israeli history: the aftermath of the Yom Kippur war and the aftermath of the first Intifadah.
