Phase Behavior of Sphere-Forming Triblock Copolymers in Films  [PDF]

Abstract: The self-assembly of sphere-forming triblock copolymers confined between two thin homogeneous surfaces is investigated based on mean-field dynamic density functional theory. The morphologies deviating from the bulk sphere-forming phase are revealed, including cylinders oriented perpendicular to the surface, cylinders oriented parallel to the surface, perforated lamellae and lamellae by varying film thickness and surface field strength. The phase diagram of surface reconstruction is also constructed. By comparing the present phase diagram with the other relevant phase diagram for the cylinder-forming triblock copolymer film, the difference between the sphere-forming and the cylinder-forming triblock copolymer thin film is discussed.

Abstract: This paper examines the role of board control, chief executive officer characteristics and firm performance in determining management compensation. Based on China stock market data in year 2001, the empirical results show that no significant relation exists between management compensation and board size, the proportion of independent directors on a board. The duality of CEO has significantly positive relation with the management compensation. In addition, the management compensation is much closely related to chief executive officer characteristics than to the board structure and firm performance.
Partial equilibrium approximations in Apoptosis

Abstract: Apoptosis is one of the most basic biological processes. In apoptosis, tens of species are involved in many biochemical reactions with times scales of widely differing orders of magnitude. By the law of mass action, the process is mathematically described with a large and stiff system of ODEs (ordinary differential equations). The goal of this work is to simplify such systems of ODEs with the PEA (partial equilibrium approximation) method. In doing so, we propose a general framework of the PEA method together with some conditions, under which the PEA method can be justified rigorously. The main condition is the principle of detailed balance for fast reactions as a whole. With the justified method as a tool, we made many attempts via numerical tests to simplify the Fas-signaling pathway model due to Hua et al. (2005) and found that nine of reactions therein can be well regarded as relatively fast. This paper reports our simplification of Hua at el.'s model with the PEA method based on the fastness of the nine reactions, together with numerical results which confirm the reliability of our simplified model.
Characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and their element distributions in sub-health status: a modern literature review

Abstract: Objective: To probe into the characteristics of traditional Chinese medicine syndromes and their element distributions in sub-health status.Methods: Literatures on sub-health in past 20 years were collected, and a data bank was set up by using EpiData 2.0. The frequencies of syndromes and their elements were analyzed using SPSS 12.0.Results: Out of the 50 syndromes obtained from the standardization of syndrome nomenclature, and the top three were stagnation of liver-qi, deficiency of both heart and spleen, and deficiency of liver-yin and kidney-yin. Spleen, liver and kidney were the top three of all the 14 disease locations. Qi-deficiency, qi-stagnation and damp pathogen were the top three pathogenicity types.Conclusion: Although the traditional Chinese medicine syndromes in sub-health status are scattered in the distribution, the main syndromes take up a leading proportion and their elements are concise and concentrated in distribution. Therefore, it is necessary to make a standard study on traditional Chinese medicine syndromes in sub-health status from syndrome elements.
A Kinetic Model for Cell Damage Caused by Oligomer Formation

Abstract: It is well-known that the formation of amyloid fiber may cause invertible damage to cells, while the underlying mechanism has not been fully uncovered. In this paper, we construct a mathematical model, consisting of infinite ODEs in the form of mass-action equations together with two reaction-convection PDEs, and then simplify it to a system of 5 ODEs by using the maximum entropy principle. This model is based on four simple assumptions, one of which is that cell damage is raised by oligomers rather than mature fibrils. With the simplified model, the effects of nucleation and elongation, fragmentation, protein and seeds concentrations on amyloid formation and cell damage are extensively explored and compared with experiments. We hope that our results can provide a valuable insight into the processes of amyloid formation and cell damage thus raised.
Quantum interference effect in electron tunneling through a quantum-dot-ring spin valve

Abstract: Spin-dependent transport through a quantum-dot (QD) ring coupled to ferromagnetic leads with noncollinear magnetizations is studied theoretically. Tunneling current, current spin polarization and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) as functions of the bias voltage and the direct coupling strength between the two leads are analyzed by the nonequilibrium Green's function technique. It is shown that the magnitudes of these quantities are sensitive to the relative angle between the leads' magnetic moments and the quantum interference effect originated from the inter-lead coupling. We pay particular attention on the Coulomb blockade regime and find the relative current magnitudes of different magnetization angles can be reversed by tuning the inter-lead coupling strength, resulting in sign change of the TMR. For large enough inter-lead coupling strength, the current spin polarizations for parallel and antiparallel magnetic configurations will approach to unit and zero, respectively. PACS numbers:

Abstract: Plant functional groups(PFGs) is assemblage of plants which have certain functional characteristics, and is an ecological concept introduced by ecologist in order to study the response of vegetation to climate changes and disturbances. At present the key problem about PFGs still is the plant feature selection applying to classication of PFGs. Taking steppe community in Xilin river Basin of Inner Mongolia as the case study area, 12 sampling plots including 3 steppe community types (Leymus chinensis stppe, Stipa grandis steppe, Leymus chinensis meadow steppe) each with 4 degradation intensities (including undegraed, light degraded, morderated degraded, heavy degraded ) were selected, based on the determination of the caloric values for plant species, a new functional classification method named by Energy Plant Functional Groups (ab. Energy PFGs) was set, which grouped the species into 3 groups including high-energy PFGs, moderate-energy PFGs and low-energy PFGs according to the mean caloric value of species by man-made subsection then the objectivity and feasibility of the the Energy PFGs classification methods were discussed.

Abstract: 空气动力学粗糙度、零平面位移高度是植被覆盖地表的两个重要的空气动力学特征参数,利用数值计算的方法,运用Matlab软件编程,对内蒙古四子王旗草地地表的空气动学粗糙度、零平面位移高度进行模拟计算、绘图及分析。得到了在8种植被密度和6种植被高度情况下摩阻速度、空气动学粗糙度、零平面位移高度与风速的关系,并与野外实验数据进行对比分析,发现模拟值可以很好的反映空气动力学参数的性质。进而分别得到了包括植被密度的风速与摩阻速度、空气动学粗糙度的关系式和包括植被高度的风速与摩阻速度、空气动学粗糙度的关系式,这有助于进一步研究该地区草地风沙运动机理,以及床面与近地层气流相互作用的力学性质。

Abstract: In the title complex, [Cu4Cl4(C58H52N2P4)]n, four CuII atoms are held together via two doubly bridging and two triply bridging chlorides, forming a stair-like Cu4Cl4 core having crystallographically imposed inversion symmetry, while the benzene-1,4-diamine ligand (with a crystallographic inversion center at the centroid) acts in a tetradentate coordination mode, bridging two adjacent Cu4Cl4 cores, resulting in a chain along the a-axis direction. One Cu atom has a distorted tetrahedral geometry, coordinated by one P atom, one μ2-Cl and two μ3-Cl atoms, while the second Cu atom adopts a trigonal geometry, coordinated by one P atom, one μ2-Cl and one μ3-Cl atoms.
Effect of Bizhongxiao decoction and its dismantled formulae on IL-1 and TNF levels in collagen-induced arthritis in rat synovial joints

Abstract: Background Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a chronic autoimmune disease, affects sufferers in many different ways. Treatment of this chronic condition is particularly challenging. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) provides alternatives. Bizhongxiao decoction (BZX) is a TCM complex, which has been used clinically for many years to treat RA. The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of BZX decoction and its dismantled formulae on IL-1 and TNF-1 levels in rats with RA, and to elucidate its mechanism of action. Methods Ninety healthy normal female SD rats were randomly divided into six groups: normal (control), model, BZX decoction, and the three dismantled formulae (I: heat-clearing and detoxication, II: dissipating dampness, and III: blood circulation promotion). Apart from the normal (control) group, the rats in each group were injected subcutaneously with bovine type II collagen and complete Freund adjuvant to establish a collagen-induced arthritis model, so that inhibition of foot swelling in the rats by BZX decoction and its dismantled formulae could be observed. Immunohistochemistry was used to assess the levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-1 and TNF in synovial joints at various time points. Results Twenty-one days after the model was established, the levels of TNF and IL-1 were significantly higher in the model group, BZX decoction group and dismantled formula groups I, II and III than in the normal controls (P < 0.05). The levels of these cytokines were significantly higher in the model group than the BZX decoction or the three dismantled formula groups (P <0.01). At longer times, the TNF and IL-1 levels in model group rose gradually; those in the BZX decoction and dismantled formula groups were gradually reduced. The cytokine levels in the BZX decoction group were lower than in the three dismantled formula groups and continued to decline. Conclusions BZX decoction and the three dismantled formulae examined down-regulated the inflammatory factors IL-1 and TNF in collagen-induced arthritis rat models, but BZX exerted the strongest effect.
