The First Metacarpal is the Thumb First Phalange: EvoDevo Implications
Valenzuela,Carlos, Y; Berríos-Loyola,R; Canals,M;
International Journal of Morphology , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0717-95022009000400004
Abstract: we examined the status of the first metacarpal bone whose shape, fetal and post-natal development correspond to those of the thumb proximal phalanx. galen already described this, circa 170 ce. our radiographic data confirm that the pre-axial (radial or anterior) side of the hand matures, later than the post-axial (ulnar or posterior) side, both, pre- and post-natally. a new perspective on thumb primate and human ontogeny is discussed and comparative observations on the evolutionary development (evodevo) of the thumb and the first toe are proposed along with a nomenclature honoring galen's original proposition.

Objective: Evaluate classic RF, an emergent RF (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein: hsCRP) and two noninvasive early markers of atherosclerosis: brachial ultrasound endothelium - dependent dilation (EDD) and carotid intima - media thickness (IMT)in obese versus normal children. Patients and Methods: Twenty-six obese children (BMI > Pc95) and 57 normal children (BMI P 10-85) were evaluated with anthropometry, arterial pressure (AP), EDD, IMT, plasmatic hsCRP, lipid profile and glucose. Results: 50% were girls and 41% prepuberty. Age: 9.9 ± 1.6 vs 9.8 ± 1.8 years, zBMI: 2.0 ± 0.2 vs 0.17 ± 0.6, waist circumference (% media):133.5 ± 16 vs 100.5 ± 10% in obese and normal, respectively. The obese ones had higher total cholesterol, LDL-C, triglycerides, hsCRP and lower HDL-C (p < 0.005). There was no difference in DMF: 9.03 ± 5.2 % vs 9.3 ± 4.2 % and IMT: 0.49 ± 0.03 vs 0.50 ± 0.03 mm, glucose and AP. Conclusion: The obese chilean children present a higher load of classic RF and hsCRP level that normal ones. Nevertheless, there was no difference in sub clinical atherosclerosis markers
Berríos Medel,Fernando;
Teología y vida , 2011, DOI: 10.4067/S0049-34492011000300005
Abstract: in november 2010, the 100th plenary assembly of the bishops' conference of chile was held. on the occasion of this symbolic event, this paper presents the results of a study of the content of statements emanating from these episcopal assemblies. it first takes an overall historical look at the texts, sorted by decade, then moves on to highlight and briefly analyze their main theological points. finally, to conclude, there is a reflection on some ecclesial perspectives coming from the lessons of history and the present challenges to the church.
Berríos E.,Patricio;
Revista chilena de infectología , 2005, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-10182005000100006
Abstract: in chile equine influenza has been strongly related to continental epizootics. first outbreak was described in 1963; main outbreaks were reported in 1977, 1985 and 1992. equine influenza virus was isolated in three opportunities: h7n7 (a/equi/1/santiago, chile/1977); h3n8 (a/equi/2/santiago, chile/1985) and h3n8 (a/equi/2/quillota, chile/1992). the most serious outbreak was caused by strain h7n7 in 1977. since 1992 equine influenza has not been reported in our country. in 1973 was described a case of influenza and seroconversion in a human being related with horses suffering a respiratory distress diagnosed as equine influenza; unfortunately the isolated virus was not typed
Fiebre aftosa en seres humanos: Un caso en Chile
Berríos E,Patricio;
Revista chilena de infectología , 2007, DOI: 10.4067/S0716-10182007000200013
Abstract: foot and mouth disease (fmd) of cattle can cause a significant economic burden and is thus for one of the most feared of cattle disease. fmd is endemic in south america, africa, asia and parts of europe and it is characterized by vesicles in different locations, mainly mouth, feet and teats leading to severe animal weakness. currently most countries refuse to import livestock and livestock products from fmd areas. north and central america are currently free of fmd and chile is free of fmd from 1987. approximately 40 cases of human infection with fmd virus have been reported, mostly in europe, and confirmed by virus isolation and the detection of a specific immune response. we discuss the case of a human infection with fmd virus occurred in chile in 1961 and other relevant cases reported. fmd does not currently present a threat to public health. even though the fmd virus has the potential to mutate rapidly and emerge as a significant human zoonosis; the rarity of the disease in humans despite a long history of close contact with fmd infected animals suggests that the risk is highly improbable. then fmd should not be managed as a zoonosis

Veritas , 2012, DOI: 10.4067/S0718-92732012000100009
Abstract: theology, that part of faith and finds it meaning in her service to the specificity of each historical context, can not but induce in his own end to the transmission of that faith. karl rahner, arguably one of the most important theologians of the twentieth century was characterized, despite the density and complexity of his thought, his effort to make the christian message relevant in modern culture. from the understanding of imprinting ?anthropological? than the german theologian tried to give his theology, this article tries to show the light to be found in his method ?transcendental? as the path of an authentic pedagogy of faith.
Berríos,Fernando;
Teología y vida , 2008, DOI: 10.4067/S0049-34492008000300007
Abstract: ecclesiology, understood as a critical reflection on the church with regard to its meaning and mission, must be a permanent exercise in the life of the christian community. in the present article, the author begins his reflection with consideration of the ecclesiological lines that have dominated the documents of the general conferences of the latin american episcopate, especially the fifth and latest conference held in aparecida, brazil, in 2007. the present article points out the principal, ber ecclesiological lines of the conclusive document of the conference and, at a second moment, highlights the more specific accents of that ecclesiology, attempting to explain them. following this, the author then briefly treats two particular themes as deserving of ongoing reflection, taking the document of aparecida as their starting point. finally, the author sketches out, as a kind of epilogue, an ecclesiological exploration that takes into consideration some of the intuitions in the document that, according to the author, are still pending further reflection.
Berríos,Fernando;
Teología y vida , 2009, DOI: 10.4067/S0049-34492009000100020
Abstract: hans urs von balthasar (1905-1988) and karl rahner (1904-1984) were two great figures of 20th century theology. their works influenced the course of the principal currents of thought that converged in the event of vatican council ii, and propelled the profound theological renewal linked to it. for this reason studies abound regarding their respective works, in both cases enormous. the relationship between them has equally been an object of interest. they had important points in common, but also drew apart on others, owing principally to fundamental philosophico-theological divergences. this article undertakes the relationship from rahner′s point of view-his own understanding of placing a stake in the transcendental perspective-but also from the angle of how von balthasar valued that stake. finally the author attempts a reflection on that essential quality of this interchange that today ought to be recovered for a wider and deeper theological vision of the mystery of the saving action of god in christ.
Berríos,Fernando;
Teología y vida , 2002, DOI: 10.4067/S0049-34492002000400001
Abstract: what is the place of the reflection on the content of salvation, in the catechism and the theological formation of believers, which are primarily aimed at the christian experience and hope? what is it like believing in a saving god, here and now? these fundamental questions bring us to the nucleus of the christian soteriology and force both the theology and the preaching to specify the historical aspect of the saving action of jesus. this issue considers two aspects; escato-finalistic consummation and the plenitude inaugurated in the person of jesus. thus being a permanent source of meaning and support of the human life. in the christian belief, what is human is constantly referred to a transcendent plenitude (both historically and in its final destination). hence, the praxis of the historical setting depends non this gratuity which brings about an important topic for the anthropological theology. if the biblical revelation evokes god?s saving action to a historical moment but keeping his radical otherness, to what extent will such events be part of man?s set of actions, attitudes and historical options, which we call ?praxis?? this article reflects on these issues in the light of karl rahner?s transcendental theology, not so much in its practical stream, but as an underlining impulse and pervasive issue of the reflection. the author pursues to give an inkling of the perspectives, which may offer some deepening in the theological approach of the historical praxis
