The Vertical and Horizontal Spatial-Temporal Conceptual Metaphor Representation of Chinese Temporal Words  [PDF]

Abstract: People rely on spatial-temporal metaphor when they talk and think about abstract temporal concept. The purpose of this study is to further investigate the mechanism of the multi-dimensional spatial-temporal conceptual metaphor in Chinese. Using the spatial cuing paradigm, we examined the cognitive impact of the Chinese vertical and horizontal spatial-temporal metaphor, and explored the dominant dimension between the two metaphors in context. The results showed that the processing of temporal concepts for Chinese speakers involved not only the horizontal spatial-temporal metaphor, but also the vertical spatial-temporal metaphor. The horizontal dimension was the dominant dimension of spatial-temporal metaphor in the processing of temporal concepts in Chinese. The findings demonstrated that representation of time depends on representation of space, supporting the Metaphorical Structuring View.
Investigation of the differences between the “COLD” and “HOT” nature of Coptis chinensis Franch and its processed materials based on animal’s temperature tropism

Abstract: The description and differentiation of the so-called “Cold” and “Hot” natures, the primary “Drug Naure” of Chinese medicine, is the focus of theoretical research. In this study, the divergency between the “Cold” and the “Hot” natures was investigated through examining the temperature tropism of mice affected by Coptis chinensis Franch and its processed materials by using a cold/hot plate differentiating technology. After exposure to C. chinensis Franch, the macroscopic behavioral index of the remaining rate (RR) on a warm pad (40 °C) significantly increased (P<0.05), suggesting the enhancement of Hot tropism. The internal indexes of adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activity and oxygen consuming volume decreased significantly (P<0.05), suggesting the decapability of energy metabolism. This external behavior of Hot tropism might reflect the internal Cold nature of C. chinensis Franch. However, the processed materials of C. chinensis Franch exhibited a different Cold nature in temperature tropism compared with crude C. chinensis Franch (CC): the Cold nature of bile-processed C. chinensis Franch (BC) enhanced while the ginger-processed C. chinensis Franch (GC) changed inversely. The changing sequence was consistent with the theoretical prognostication. It is indicated that the external Cold & Hot natures of Chinese medicine may possibly reflect in an ethological way for the changes of animal’s temperature tropism which might be internally regulated by the body’s energy metabolism.

Abstract: The Data Platform of Resource and Environment—whose data mainly come from field observation stations, spatial observations, and internet service institutions—is the base of data analysis and model simulation in geoscience research in China. Among this integrated data platform, the tasks of the data platform of field observation stations are principally data collection, management, assimilation, and share service. Taking into consideration the distributing characteristics of the data sources and the service objects, the authors formulated the framework of the field observation stations’ data platform based on the grid technology and designed its operating processes. The authors have further defined and analyzed the key functions and implementing techniques for each module. In a Linux operating system, validation tests for the data platform’s function on data replication, data synchronization, and unified data service have been conducted under an environment that of the simulating field stations.

Deletion of the V2 vasopressin receptor gene in two Chinese patients with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

Abstract: Five specific fragments, covering entire coding sequence and their flanking intronic sequences of AVPR2 gene, were not observed in both patients, while those fragments were all detected in the control subjects. Several different fragments around the AVPR2 locus were amplified step by step. It was revealed that a genomic fragment of 5,995-bp, which contained the entire AVPR2 gene and the last exon (exon 22) of the C1 gene, was deleted and a 3-bp (GAG) was inserted. Examination of the other family members showed that the mothers and the grandmother were carriers for this deletion.Our findings suggest that the two patients in a Chinese family suffering from congenital NDI had a 5,995-bp deletion and 3-bp (GAG) insertion at Xq28. The deletion contained the entire AVPR2 gene and exon 22 of the C1 gene.Congenital nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) is a rare inherited disorder characterized by the excretion of large volumes of diluted urine resulting from resistance of the renal collecting duct to the antidiuretic hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP), and the clinical characteristics include polyuria, polydipsia, fever, hypernatremic dehydration, and constipation. Ninety percent of congenital NDI are linked to the X-chromosome and are caused by loss-of-function mutations in the arginine vasopressin type 2 receptor (AVPR2) gene. Since human AVPR2 gene was cloned successfully in 1992, more than 190 distinct disease-causing mutations in AVPR2 gene have been identified in X-linked congenital NDI families[1]. The mutations consist of missense, nonsense, frameshift, splice-site, insertion, and deletion mutations. These mutations are not concentrated on one domain of the receptor, but are scattered throughout the protein, except for the part coding of the N- and C-terminal tails of the receptor. Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility and scientificity of organoleptic evaluation method for Chinese medicinal materials.A two-round investigation based on Delphi method was performed to test the consistency and reproducibility of organoleptic evaluation on Rhizoma coptidis.Fourteen experts were invited in this evaluation.The influence of working years,job category and education background of these experts on their evaluation results was also discussed.Then,main organoleptic indices which experts emphasized on the evaluation of Rhizoma coptidis quality were concluded by statistical analysis.The results showed that the average authority coefficient of invited experts was 0.76 and the average reproducing rate of each expert was 88.3%.The average reproducing rate of expert groups was above 77.4%.It was found that job category and education background had significant influence to the evaluation results(P<0.05).Those experts received modern education or worked in colleges made more reliable and reproducible results than others.Working years of experts had some influence to the results but no statistical significance was found.Based on the statistical analysis,shape,size and color were concluded as the main organoleptic indices to judge the commercial specifications of Rhizoma coptidis in its quality evaluation.It is concluded that organoleptic evaluation method was objective and repeatable.Delphi method can be utilized as an effective tool to investigate the objectivity and normalization of organoleptic evaluation for Chinese medicinal materials.
Rosmarinic Acid from Eelgrass Shows Nematicidal and Antibacterial Activities against Pine Wood Nematode and Its Carrying Bacteria

Abstract: Pine wilt disease (PWD), a destructive disease for pine trees, is caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN), Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and additional bacteria. In this study, extracts of Zostera marina showed a high nematicidal activity against PWN and some of the bacteria that it carries. Light yellow crystals were obtained from extracts of Z .?marina through solvent extraction, followed by chromatography on AB-8 resin and crystallization. The NMR and HPLC analysis showed that the isolated compound was rosmarinic acid (RosA). RosA showed effective nematicidal activity, of which the LC 50 (50% lethal concentration) to PWN at 24 h, 48 h and 72 h was 1.18 mg/g, 1.05 mg/g and 0.95 mg/g, respectively. To get a high yield rate of RosA from Z . marina, single factor experiments and an L 9 (3 4) orthogonal experiment were performed. This extraction process involved 70% ethanol for 3 h at 40 °C. The extraction dosage was 1:50 (w/v). The highest yield of RosA from Zostera was 3.13 mg/g DW (dried weight). The crude extracts of Zostera marina (10 mg/mL) and RosA (1 mg/mL) also showed inhibitory effects to some bacterial strains carried by PWN: Klebsiella sp., Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Streptomyces sp. and Pantoea agglomerans. The results of these studies provide clues for preparing pesticide to control PWD from Z . marina.
The Response Formula and Controllability&Observability of the General State-Space Model for a Two-Dimensional Linear Discrete System with Varying Coefficients

Abstract: In this paper, we consider the general state-space model for the two-dimensional linear discrete systems with varying coefficients. The general formula for response of such systems is derived. Necessary and sufficient conditions for local controllability and observability are obtained. In addition, minimum energy problem is solved.
