Suprasellar cysts: clinical presentation, surgical indications, and optimal surgical treatment

Abstract: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 73 consecutive patients with SSC who were treated between June 2002 and September 2009. Twenty-two patients were treated with VC and 51 with VCC. Outcome was assessed by clinical examination and magnetic resonance imaging.The patients were divided into five groups based on age at presentation: age less than 1 year (n = 6), 1-5 years (n = 36), 6-10 years (n = 15), 11-20 years (n = 11), and 21-53 years (n = 5). The main clinical presentations were macrocrania (100%), motor deficits (50%), and gaze disturbance (33.3%) in the age less than 1 year group; macrocrania (75%), motor deficits (63.9%), and gaze disturbance (27.8%) in the 1-5 years group; macrocrania (46.7%), symptoms of raised intracranial pressure (ICP) (40.0%), endocrine dysfunction (40%), and seizures (33.3%) in the 6-10 years group; symptoms of raised ICP (54.5%), endocrine dysfunction (54.5%), and reduced visual field or acuity (36.4%) in the 11-20 years group; and symptoms of raised ICP (80.0%) and reduced visual field or acuity (40.0%) in the 21-53 years group. The overall success rate of endoscopic fenestration was 90.4%. A Kaplan-Meier curve for long-term efficacy of the two treatment modalities showed better results for VCC than for VC (p = 0.008).Different age groups with SSCs have different main clinical presentations. VCC appears to be more efficacious than VC.Suprasellar cysts (SSCs) are benign developmental collections of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Their presence in utero and their high prevalence in children who have no history of trauma support the assumption that they are congenital [1-3]. Although their true histological nature is rarely known because their membranes are not often analyzed histologically, it is reasonable to think that the majority are arachnoid cysts. Synthesis and thermoelectric properties of nanostructured bismuth telluride alloys

Abstract: The Bi and the Te nano-powders are prepared by inert gas protected evaporation-condensation method; the n-type Bi2Te3 bulk materials with nano-layer and twin crystallite sub-structures are then synthesized by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering technique. The effects of grain size and microstructure on thermoelectric property are also systematically studied. The SEM and the TEM analyseis show that the nano-layered Bi2Te3 bulk materials with twin crystallite sub-structures could be fabricated by controlling the preparing procedures. The thermoelectric property result shows that the thermal conductivity is lowered compared with that of bulk material of coarse-grained starting powders. The thermal conductivity decreases from 1.80 W/mK to 1.19 W/mK at 423 K, the lattice thermal conductivity decreases from 1.16 W/mK to 0.61 W/mK at 423 K, indicating that the phonon scattering could be enhanced due to the coexistence of nano-layer and twin crystallite sub-structures, leading to reduced phonon thermal conductivity. The dimensionless figure of merit ZT reaches 0.74 at 423 K for bulk materials sintered at 693 K.

Abstract: Based on the operation requirement and design feature of equipment, a Petri-net model is established in this paper to describe the equipment maintaining process. Some prior-fire rules are also provided. According to this rules, a maintenance support system is established to meet the equipment operation requirements.
Higher_order correlative stacking for seismic data in the wavelet domain

Abstract: The horizontal stacking plays an important role in processing seismic data digitally, due to its efficiency in suppressing random noise and multiplies. However,for some noise exhibiting coherence and correlation in adjacent traces, the weighted stacking based on the conventional correlative function always leads to false events and lower ratios of signal to noise(S/N). In this paper, a new method of higher_order correlative stacking (HOCS) is proposed in the light of the theory of wavelet and higher_order statistics. The main idea is to stack common midpoint gathers after the normal movemout, according to the weight that is calculated on the basis of the higher_order correlative function in the wavelet domain. The results of both synthetic and practical examples show the advantages in improving S/N and muting some correlative noise that the conventional stacking can not inhibit.

18α-Glycyrrhetinic Acid Down-Regulates Expression of Type I and III Collagen via TGF-Β1/Smad Signaling Pathway in Human and Rat Hepatic Stellate Cells

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effects of 18α-glycyrrhetinic acid (18α-GA) on the expression of type I and III collagen in human and rat hepatic stellate cells (HSC) and to explore the role of TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway involved. Methods: Following 18α-GA treatment, the cell viability and cell growth were detected to determine the optimal concentration of 18α-GA. The expressions of TGF-β1/Smad signaling-related genes including type I and III collagen in human and rat HSCs before and after 18α-GA treatment were measured by real time PCR. The expression of related proteins was verified by western blot assay. The phosphorylation level of Smad2 and Smad3 was detected by immunocytochemistry. The DNA binding activities of SP-1, AP-1 and NF-κB were measured by both EMSA and ArrayStar transcription factor activity assay. Results: 18α-GA could decrease the mRNA and protein expression of Smad3, type I and III collagen, increase the Smad7 expression in human and rat HSCs (P<0.05), and reduce phosphorylation level of Smad3 at 24 h and 48 h after treatment. The DNA binding activities of transcription factors were suppressed by 18α-GA in human and rat HSCs at 24 h, and the activities reduced in a time dependent manner with the lowest activities at 48 h, especially for SP-1. Conclusion: 18α-GA could inhibit the mRNA and protein expression of type I and III collagen in human and rat HSCs, which may be attributed to down-regulation of Smad3, up-regulation of Smad7, and inhibition of DNA binding activities of SP-1, AP-1 and NF-κB.

Abstract: We calculated the force to which Cs atoms are subject in the one-dimensional magneto-optical trap (1D-MOT), and the properties of this force are also discussed. Several methods to increase the number of Cs atoms in the 1D-MOT are presented on the basis of the analysis of the capture and escape of Cs atoms in the 1D-MOT.
