Wang delineates Dewey’s two-year teaching in China (May 1, 1919 – July 11, 1921), how Dewey was interpreted there, and what influence he has had. In addition, Wang discusses what Dewey learned from his stay in China and how his experience there influenced his philosophy.
Are Ontario Teachers Paid More Equitably? Do Local Variables Matter?

Abstract: This study investigated whether Ontario’s education funding reform of 1998 made teacher salaries more equitable. It also examined whether selected local variables had the same influence on teacher salaries in 2001-02 as they did in 1995-96 before the reform. Average teacher salaries before the reform in 1995-96 and after the reform in 2001-02 among school boards and among census divisions were compared to see whether the variation in teacher salaries increased or decreased. A partial correlation analysis was conducted to examine the influence on teacher salaries from local variables, which were derived from a literature review. This study finds that (a) teachers are paid more equitably today than before the reform, and (b) local variables no longer really matter, as a result of the changed provincial funding formula.
Multidimensional Time Series Analysis of Financial Markets Based on the Complex Network Approach  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, a modeling method to analyze multidimensional time series based on complex networks is proposed. The rate of return sequence of the closing price and the trading volume fluctuation sequence of the Shanghai Composite Index, the Shenzhen Component Index, the S & P 500 index, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average are analyzed. The two-dimensional time series is transformed into a complex network. We analyze the spatial distribution characteristics of the network to determine the relationship between volume and price. It is found that the interaction of stock return and volume in China’ stock market is more obvious than that in the American market.
Analysis on the Phase Frequency Characteristic of Soil Impedance  [PDF]

Abstract:
Soil is a typical porous media and its impedance characteristic directly determines the performance of grounding system. Soil phase frequency characteristic measurements were carried out on various soil types and water content. This paper finds that the impedance angle of soil specimen presents a capacitive performance when power frequency (f) is low. As the frequency increases, soil impedance angle goes up rapidly. Furthermore the frequency characteristic while f > 1000 Hz is distinct in terms of different water content. In particular, at low moisture content, soil impedance angle would be higher than 0?, that is, the inductive component is obvious. The study result indicates that porous media possesses the unique conductivity property dif-ferent from conductor and solution. Its mechanism needs further study.
Dirac Fermions in Blue-Phosphorus

Abstract: We propose that Dirac cones can be engineered in phosphorene with fourfold-coordinated phosphorus atom. The key is to separate in energy the in-plane ($s$, $p_x$ and $p_y$) and out-of-plane ($p_z$) oribtals through the $sp^2$ configuration, yielding respective $\sigma$- and $\pi$-character Dirac cones, and then quench the latter. As a proof-of-principle study, we realize $\sigma$-character Dirac cone in hydrogenated/fluorinated phosphorene with the honeycomb lattice. The obtained Dirac cones are at $K$-points, slightly anisotropic, with Fermi velocities of 0.91/1.23 times that of graphene along $\Gamma$K/KM direction, and maintain a good linearity up to $\sim$2 eV for holes. One substantive advantage of $\sigma$-character Dirac cone is its convenience to tune the Dirac gap via in-plane strain. Our findings pave a new way for development of high performance electronic devices based on Dirac materials.
H-TOSSIM: Extending TOSSIM with Physical Nodes  [PDF]

Abstract: As the development of Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), software testing for WSN-based applications be-comes more and more important. Simulation testing is an important approach to WSN-based software testing, and TOSSIM is the most widely used simulation testing tool targeted at TinyOS which is the most popular operating system nowadays. However, simulation testing tools such as TOSSIM can not reveal program er-rors about communication detail or timing, and lack accurate power consumption model and even can not support power consumption estimation. In this paper, a hybrid testbed H-TOSSIM is proposed, which ex-tends TOSSIM with physical nodes. H-TOSSIM uses three physical nodes, of which, one shares the simu-lated environment with all virtual nodes to test the WSN program, and the other two bridge the real world and the simulated environment. H-TOSSIM combines the advantages of both the simulation in physical node and the simulation testing tools in WSN software testing. Through experiments, we show that H-TOSSIM really reveals program errors which the pure simulation testing can not capture, and can support power con-sumption estimation for large WSN with high accuracy and low hardware cost.

Abstract: Based on the market process theory of the Austrian School of Economics, the article explores entrepreneurship in the market process, pointing out that market process is opposite to statics equilibrium. Under statics equilibrium, it is hard to analyze entrepreneurship by economics. Entrepreneurship only exists in the market process. The article argues that in market process, entrepreneurship is reflected in entrepreneur’ behavior, including undertaking the uncertainty of business, combining heterogeneous capital, building the structure of capital. Profit-driven entrepreneur unintentionally makes economic society progress. Entrepreneurship is not only relative with entrepreneur’s personal interest, but also economic society of the entire human.
Construction of Optimal Optical Orthogonal Signature Patterns Based on Optical Code Division Multiple Access for Image Transmission

Abstract: It is stated that image transmission and access need the throughout of the system exceeding well over Gb/s,if conventional optical code division multiple access system is used as transmission system,it will be very difficult to realize because of the speed limitation of current opto-electronic devices,and the requirement to opto-electronic devices will be very high.The solution is adopted parallel transmission system based on optical code division multiple access.However,the signature of the parallel transmission system is a two-dimensional optical orthogonal signature patterns different from conventional signature sequences.Aiming at the problem that the construction of the maximum capacity of the optical orthogonal signature patterns (optimal optical orthogonal signature patterns) is lacked now,a novel construction algorithm based on block design is presented.The idea of the algorithm is based on the relationship between difference sets and optical orthogonal codes.If the concept of difference sets and block design can be extended to two-dimensional space,then according to the relationship between two-dimensional difference sets and optical orthogonal signature patterns,the construction of optimal optical orthogonal signature patterns can be achieved.The procedures to construct optimal optical orthogonal signature patterns are explained in detail.Simulation based on the algorithm is done.The simulating result shows that this algorithm can construct optimal optical orthogonal signature patterns effectively.
Effect of Water Ammonia Nitrogen Concentration on Survival of Mosquitofish Gambusia affinis  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, the relationship of the growth of invasion fish with water eutrophication processes was explored in Yangtze estuary, China. High water ammonia nitrogen concentration produced high effects on the growth and survival of mosquitofish Gambusia affinis. When the ammonia nitrogen was higher than 51.75 mg/l, the fish death rate obviously increased with days, and at the 4th day fish presented the highest mortality, while 23.72 mg/l ammonia nitrogen conditions have been able to ensure fish survival for two days in experiment treatment. Therefore, ammonia nitrogen of Grade V polluted water (national water quality criteria) is just 3 mg/l, and the water can be enough to support fish normal survival. Our results suggest mosquitofish was a suitable pioneer species for restoring polluted water ecology and purify water.
