Research on High School Students’ Everyday Life in the New Curriculum Reforms Implementation Progress in China  [PDF]

Abstract: In this paper, we employ qualitative research to examine the current situation of the implementation process of high school new curriculum reform, and study how to deal with high school students’ everyday life in China. The research revealed the contradictions and problems involving the students’ living environment, life structure, communication environment and spiritual life. Comparing “eternal ordinary or the moment of fresh” with the goal of curriculum reform and the students’ expected life, I found the deep problems about educational ideas, curriculum design, teaching patterns, evaluation criteria and etc. During the process of the reform, I further propose that the students understand everyday life rationally and critically, change the free state of life gradually, improve the structure and pace of life. Only by this can we realize the transformation of the students’ life, achieve all-round development following the nature of human-beings, and further deepen and develop the implementation of curriculum.
The Market Reaction To Stock Splits Used as Dividends  [PDF]

Abstract: This paper investigates the market reaction to stock splits based on China’s A share companies between 2007 to 2010. I find significant positive abnormal returns around the announcement date (especially before the announcement date) as well as four to six days before the execution date of China stock splits. I also observe significant negative abnormal returns just around the execution date. The above phenomenon is relatively stable even if the selection of samples and empirical models may vary, but the degree of this phenomenon might change overtime. The cross sectional regression of the abnormal returns for the announcement date shows that the phenomenon is sensitive to the split ratio and the market, and it is not sensitive to industry, company size and cash dividends. Therefore, combining with the empirical data i have constructed a high Sharpe ratio short selling investment strategy around the execution date. Then, the article further discusses the operability of the investment strategy and its stability over time.

Creation of a cardiotropic adeno-associated virus: the story of viral directed evolution

Abstract: Adeno-associated virus (AAV) is an important vector system for human gene therapy. Although use of AAV serotypes can result in efficient myocardial gene transfer, improvements in the transduction efficiency and specificity are still required. As a method for artificial modification and selection of gene function, directed evolution has been used for diverse applications in genetic engineering of enzymes and proteins. Since 2000, pioneering work has been performed on directed evolution of viral vectors. We further attempted to evolve the AAV using DNA shuffling and in vivo biopanning in a mouse model. An AAVM41 mutant was characterized, which was found to have improved transduction efficiency and specificity in myocardium, an attribute unknown for any natural AAV serotypes. This review focuses on the development of AAV vector for cardiac gene transfer, the history of directed evolution of viral vectors, and our creation of a cardiotropic AAV, which might have implications for the future design and application of viral vectors.
Smad4-mediated TGF-β signaling in tumorigenesis

Abstract: Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family members exert their function via specific type I and type II serine/threonine kinase receptors and intracellular Smad transcription factors, including the common mediator Smad4. The dual effects of TGF-β signaling on tumor initiation and progression are cell-specific and yet to be determined under distinct contexts. A number of genetically manipulated mouse models with alterations in the TGF-β pathway genes, particularly the pivotal Smad4, revealed that these genes play crucial functions in maintaining tissue homeostasis and suppressing tumorigenesis. Loss of Smad4 plays a causal role in initiating squamous cell carcinomas of skin and upper digestive tract as well as adenocarcinomas of gastrointestinal tract. However, for some cancers like pancreatic and cholangiocellular carcinomas, Smad4 deficiency does not initiate the tumorigenesis but acts as a promoter to accelerate or synergize the development and progression of cancers that are started by other oncogenic pathways. Intriguingly, emerging evidences from mouse models have highlighted the important roles of non-cell autonomous effects of Smad4-mediated TGF-β signaling in the inhibition of oncogenesis. All these data have greatly deepened our understanding of molecular mechanisms of cell-autonomous and non-cell autonomous effect of Smad4-mediated TGF-β signaling in suppressing carcinogenesis, which may facilitate the development of successful therapies targeting TGF-β signaling for the treatment of human cancers.
Mitochondria: transportation, distribution and function during spermiogenesis  [PDF]

Abstract: Spermiogenesis is a dynamic process which includes organelle reorganization and new structure formation. The morphology and distribution of the mitochondria in germ cells change to accommodate the cellular requirement. Multiple molecular motors and related proteins participate in carrying and anchoring mitochondria to the midpiece during spermiogenesis and this process is regulated precisely. Energetic metabolism provides energy for cellular activity and influences sperm survival and motility directly. Ubiquitination of mitochondria takes place during spermiogenesis, which has been implicated in sperm quality control and mitochondrial inheritance. In light of the essential roles of mitochondria in energy production, calcium homeostasis and apoptosis, mitochondria dysfunction cause severe human diseases, such as male infertility. The present study paves a way for a more detailed exploration of the biology of mitochondria during spermiogenesis.
Chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil from Korean Citrus unshiu peel  [PDF]

Abstract: The chemical composition, antioxidant and antibacterial activities of essential oil from peel of Citrus unshiuwhich cultivated in South Korea were investigated. Eight compounds were identified as l-limonene (88.11%), γ-terpinene (4.66%), cyclohexane, 2,4-diisopropenyl-1-methyl-1-vinyl (1.82%), diethyl phthalate (1.02%), β-linalool (0.97%), β-myrcene (0.91%), α-farnesene (0.91%) and o-cymene (0.85%)
by GC-MS. The SC50values of this essential oil on DPPH and superoxide anion were 0.21 and 0.22% (v/v), respectively. The results of zone of inhibition, MIC, MBC and cell viability demonstrated the essential oil of-Citrus unshiupeel displayed antibacterial effect against B. cereus KCTC 14042, B. subtilis ATCC 6633 and S. aureusATCC 6538. The release of cell material and potassium ion from the B. subtilis ATCC 6633 cells treated with essential oil was further investigated. SEM observation also revealed the damaging effect of the essential oil on the morphology of B. subtilisATCC 6633 cells at minimum inhibitory concentration.

In recent years, the emergence of new technologies, such as “internetwork”, “the Internet of things”, “cloud computing”, has overthrown the business model of traditional cultural industries. It promotes the utilization of Internet connectivity and open logic, and contributes to implementing the strategy of platform business model of cultural industries. Under the background of the “Internet+”, this paper analyzes the process of value creation of platform business model of cultural industries from four aspects, including value proposition, value creation, value delivery as well as value realization. Michael Porter’s Five Forces Model is applied to explore the innovation motivation of the platform business model of culture industries.

Abstract: The prevalence of obesity is more than 20% in many developed countries and it increases in developing countries. Obesity is associated with metabolic disorders, cardiovascular diseases, pulmonary diseases, digestive diseases, and cancers. Although other specific treatments for these complications exist, weight loss is still an essential intervention in obesity and its complications. Therapeutic life change, behavior modification, pharmacotherapy, and surgery are major approaches to weight loss. In addition, medicine used in diabetes such as Glucagon-like peptide-1 analogues may be a new type of medicine for obesity, at least for those obese patients with diabetes.
