Contrasting Drought Tolerance in Two Apple Cultivars Associated with Difference in Leaf Morphology and Anatomy  [PDF]

Abstract: Apple is one of the most important fruit trees in temperate zones, and is cultivated widely throughout the world. Drought stress affects the normal growth of apple tree, and further affects fruit yield and quality. The present study examined the effects of drought on photosynthesis and water use efficiency (WUE) of two apple cultivars (Honeycrisp and Yanfu 3) that differ in drought tolerance. The results showed that the photosynthetic rate decreased in response to drought stress for both cultivars, with significant differences in intensity. Values for net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in stressed Yanfu 3 remained significantly lower than in the controls, while, for Honeycrisp, only a slight drop in photosynthesis. Similarly, stomatal conductance (Gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci), transpiration rate (Tr) were markedly reduced in Yanfu 3 under drought stress. However, Honeycrisp showed only minor changes. Under drought stress, the contents of Chl a, Chl b and Chl t in Yanfu 3 were all decreased significantly compared with the control. However, little difference in Honeycrisp was noted between stressed plants and controls. Values for WUE in stressed Yanfu 3 remained higher than in the controls from day 3 until the end of the experiment, while no significant difference was observed in Honeycrisp. Furthermore, Honeycrisp also exhibited superior physiological traits, as indicated by its anatomical and morphological characteristics. Therefore, we conclude that the superior drought tolerance of Honeycrisp was due to its anatomical and morphological characteristics, which possibly contributed to the maintenance of higher photosynthetic capacity than Yanfu 3.

Abstract: The empirical evidence suggests that the development of stock markets in China, USA, United Kingdom, Japan and Hong Kong have independently a strongly positive correlation with their economic growth. The result brings out an important theory to support for the proposition that the stock market development is one of the key drivers of economic growth in developed and developing countries, whatever the modes of their financial systems, stage of their economic development and types of economic system.
Spin polarization control by electric means: proposal for a spin diode

Abstract: A scheme of spin diode is proposed that uses a step-like quantum wire with Rashba spin-orbit interaction, connected to two leads with different width. It is shown that a very large vertical spin-polarized current can be generated when electrons transmit from the narrow lead to the wide lead, however, it vanishes or becomes very weak when the transport direction is reversed. This difference is revealed to arise from the different local density of electron states of the quantum wire, which is dependent on the direction of bias. The spin-polarized current in the proposed structure can be generated and manipulated by purely electric means and with strong a robustness against disorder, displaying the feasibility of this structure for a real application.
Spin-polarized current separator based on a fork-shaped Rashba nanostructure

Abstract: A scheme for a spin-polarized current separator is proposed by studying the spin-dependent electron transport of a fork-shaped nanostructure with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), connected to three leads with the same width. It is found that two spin-polarized currents are of the same magnitude but opposite polarizations can be generated simultaneously in the two output leads when the spin-unpolarized electrons injected from the input lead. The underlying physics is revealed to originate from the different spin-dependent conductance caused by the effects of Rashba SOC and the geometrical structure of the system. Further study shows that the spin-polarized current with strong a robustness against disorder, demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed nanostructure for a real application.
Bibliometric Analysis of Patient Navigation Model Applied in Colorectal Cancer Care Based on Web of Science  [PDF]

Abstract: Background: The mortality rate of colorectal cancer in China is on the rise, which has exceeded the global average rate, thus making the care of colorectal cancer widely concerned. As a comprehensive nursing model, the patient navigation model has shown its effectiveness in improving the quality of life among patients with chronic diseases and reducing the shortage of current healthcare resources in some area. This study aims to identify the current status and dilemma of the patient navigation model applied in colorectal cancer care in China. Methods: Bibliometric method was used to analyze published articles regarding the application of patient navigation model in colorectal cancer care retrieved from the Web of Science database. Statistics were presented using visualization method processed by the Bibliographic Items Co-occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB) software. Results: 124 articles, from 2006 to 2018, covering 14 countries, involving 931 researchers, 356 institutions and 60 publications were obtained; American research papers are the largest components of the aforementioned articles; only one of them is written by Chinese authors. The 3 leading institutions in this domain are University OF Rochester, Ohio State University, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, yet the distribution of authors is relatively decentralized. “Cancer” is the main journal that publishes the researches in this domain. Research hotspots are on “cancer prevention and screening”, “health disparities”, “economic evaluation”, “patient navigators”, and “ethnicity”. Conclusion: In China, the research on the patient navigation is still in its infancy. Therefore, the Chinese government should provide more endorsement to this particular area and encourage the cooperation with other countries. China, having a long way to go, should further explore patient navigation on colorectal cancer care and establish a model that matches its cultural backgrounds.
A Common Variant in the SIAH2 Locus Is Associated with Estrogen Receptor-Positive Breast Cancer in the Chinese Han Population

Abstract: Background Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified many loci associated with breast cancer risk. These studies have primarily been conducted in populations of European descent. Objective To determine whether previously reported susceptibility loci in other ethnic groups are also risk factors for breast cancer in a Chinese population. Method We genotyped 21 previously reported single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within a female Chinese cohort of 1203 breast cancer cases and 2525 healthy controls using the Sequenom iPlex platform. Fourteen SNPs passed the quality control test. These SNPs were subjected to statistical analysis for the entire cohort and were further analyzed for estrogen receptor (ER) status. The associations of the SNPs with disease susceptibility were assessed using logistic regression, adjusting for age. The Bonferroni correction was used to conservatively account for multiple testing, and the threshold for statistical significance was P<3.57×10?3 (0.05/14). Result Although none of the SNPs showed an overall association with breast cancer, an analysis of the ER status of the breast cancer patients revealed that the SIAH2 locus (rs6788895; P = 5.73×10?4, odds ratio [OR] = 0.81) is associated with ER-positive breast cancer. Conclusion A common variant in the SIAH2 locus is associated with ER-positive breast cancer in the Chinese Han population. The replication of published GWAS results in other ethnic groups provides important information regarding the genetic etiology of breast cancer.
A General Calculating Method of Rotor’s Torsional Stiffness Based on Stiffness Influence Coefficient  [PDF]

Abstract: In order to develop a general calculating rotor’s torsional stiffness based on stiffness influence coefficient for different rotor assembling, the calculation method of the torsional stiffness influence coefficient of equal thickness disc is researched in this paper at first. Then the torsional stiffness influence coefficient λ of equal thickness disc is fit to a binary curved face and a calculation equation is obtained based on a large quantity of calculating data, which lays the foundation for research on a general calculating method of rotor torsional stiffness. Thirdly a simplified calculation method for equivalent stiffness diameter of stepped equal thickness disc and cone disc in the steam turbine generators is suggested. Finally a general calculating program for calculating rotor’s torsional vibration features is developed, and the torsional vibration features of a verity of steam turbine rotors are calculated for verification. The calculating results show that stiffness influence coefficient λ of equal-thickness disc depends on parameters of B and H, as well as the stiffness influence coefficient λ; and discs with complex structure can be simplified to equal-thickness discs with little error by using the method suggested in this paper; error can be controlled within 1% when equivalent diameter of stiffness is calculated by this method.
Coordinated Formation Control of Multiple Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for Pipeline Inspection

Abstract: This paper addresses the control problem of inspecting underwater pipeline on the seabed, with coordinated multiple autonomous underwater vehicles in a formation. Based on the leader-follower strategy, the dedicated nonlinear path following controller is rigorously built on Lyapunov-based design, driving a fleet of vehicles onto assigned parallel paths elevated and offset from the underwater pipeline, while keeping a triangle formation to capture complete 3D images for inspection. Due to the spatial-temporal decoupling characteristics of individual path following controller, the velocities of the followers can be adapted in the coordinated control level, only relying on the information of generalized along-path length from the leader, in order to build the desired formation. Thus, the communication variable broadcast from the leader is kept to a minimum, which is feasible under the severely constraints of acoustic communication bandwidth. Simulation results illustrate the efficiency of coordinated formation controller proposed for underwater pipeline inspection.
Performance and Reliability of DSRC Vehicular Safety Communication: A Formal Analysis

Abstract: IEEE- and ASTM-adopted dedicated short range communications (DSRC) standard toward 802.11p is a key enabling technology for the next generation of vehicular safety communication. Broadcasting of safety messages is one of the fundamental services in DSRC. There have been numerous publications addressing design and analysis of such broadcast ad hoc system based on the simulations. For the first time, an analytical model is proposed in this paper to evaluate performance and reliability of IEEE 802.11a-based vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) safety-related broadcast services in DSRC system on highway. The proposed model takes two safety services with different priorities, nonsaturated message arrival, hidden terminal problem, fading transmission channel, transmission range, IEEE 802.11 backoff counter process, and highly mobile vehicles on highway into account. Based on the solutions to the proposed analytic model, closed-form expressions of channel throughput, transmission delay, and packet reception rates are derived. From the obtained numerical results under various offered traffic and network parameters, new insights and enhancement suggestions are given.
