Conrado, Thiago V;Maluf, Wilson Roberto;Silva, Ernani C da;Gomes, Luiz Ant?nio Augusto;
Horticultura Brasileira , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-05362011000300030
Abstract: the horta fácil software was designed as a tool for vegetable gardeners and extension agents in order to effect an efficient planning and management of continuous vegetable production over time. by taking into account the phenological cycle of different vegetable species, the software optimizes the area to be grown with each of them, and indicates the number and dimension of the area modules to be grown for each crop. calculations can be done for a variable number of vegetable crop species, based on the expected weekly production for each of them. these calculations use crop cultivation models based on the different phenological phases of the crop cycle, on the spacing utilized, and on expected yields, information that is stored in a data bank included in the software. data bank information can be edited so as to provide realistic data for each crop for specific locations. in addition to calculating the crop modules for each species to be grown, the software also provides a cropping schedule with the common tasks to be performed in each crop, on a week-to-week basis. the software optimizes the crop production schedule, and provides for a more exact estimate of the quantities to be harvested each week, in order to avoid periods with under or overproduction. it also provides an estimate of the total area and total water usage by the vegetable garden to be planned. horta fácil may be an important tool for extension technicians and other professionals involved in the planning and management of vegetable production activities, whether in commercial, home, school or community gardening.

Arquivos de Gastroenterologia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-28032011000300002
Abstract: context: gastroesophageal reflux disease is very prevalent in the world. endoscopically it can be classified as nonerosive when there is no mucosal erosive lesion on endoscopy. the presence of endoscopic minimal lesions is included in the los angeles classification for reflux disease. virtual chromoendoscopy fuji intelligent color enhancement (fice) is an endoscopic technique that enhances detection of small lesions of the digestive tract. objective: to evaluate whether the use of fice improves the diagnosis of minimal lesions on endoscopy, and to assess the association of symptoms with minimal lesions in patients with nonerosive reflux disease. methods: one hundred fifty-five patients were enrolled, 62 with typical reflux symptoms and 93 without esophageal symptoms. the patients had normal esophageal endoscopy or minimal lesions. each patient was examined initially by conventional video endoscopy and then using fice. results: among 155 patients, 113 had a normal conventional endoscopy and 42 had minimal lesions. sixty-two patients had typical reflux symptoms, and 93 other symptoms unrelated to reflux. in 104 patients, the esophageal mucosa was normal for both conventional endoscopy and fice, in 42 patients both techniques showed minimal lesions, in 9 patients conventional endoscopy was normal and minimal lesions were shown by fice. the height and circumference of minimal lesions were greater using fice than that measured by conventional endoscopy. there was a significant association of the presence of minimal lesions with male gender, but not with alcoholism, smoking, anti-inflammatory drugs and age. the diagnosis of minimal lesions was observer-dependent, both in conventional endoscopy as using fice. conclusions: the use of fice improves the diagnosis of minimal lesions as compared to conventional videoendoscopy, although this diagnosis remains observer-dependent. there was no association between the presences of minimal lesions with reflux symptoms.

Brazilian Dental Journal , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-64402009000100002
Abstract: this aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of two experimental acetazolamide (az)-based pastes in the subcutaneous tissue of rats. both pastes contained az as the main component in similar concentration. the vehicle in experimental paste 1 was saline, while experimental paste 2 was prepared with propylene glycol. sixty polyethylene tubes were sealed at one end with gutta-percha (gp), which served as a control. half of the tubes were filled with paste 1 and half with paste 2. the tubes were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of 15 rats, being 4 tubes for each animal. the animals were killed 7, 15 and 45 days after surgery and the specimens were processed in laboratory. the histological sections were stained with hematoxylin and eosin and were analyzed by light microscopy. scores were assigned to level of inflammatory process: 1- none; 2- mild; 3- moderate; 4- severe. the data were analyzed statistically by the kruskal-wallis test (p≤0.05). paste 1 produced an inflammatory process at 7 days. however, the intensity of this inflammation decreased with time and was nearly absent at 45 days. no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) was observed between the control (gp) and paste 1. however, paste 2 produced inflammatory response at all study periods and differed significantly (p<0.05) from the control. in conclusion, in the present study, the experimental az-based paste 1 was considered as biocompatible as the control matrial (gp), while experimental paste 2 was irritating to rat subcutaneous tissue.

Ciência e Agrotecnologia , 2003, DOI: 10.1590/S1413-70542003000500006
Abstract: the work was designed to evaluate the combining capacity of sweet pepper breeding lines, to identify superior hybrids for fruit yield and quality, and to infer about the mode of gene action involved in the expression of economically important pepper traits. north carolina-ii scheme partial diallel crosses were obtained, and were used to estimate general combining abilities (gca) of parental lines and specific combining abilities (sca) of parental combinations. there was evidence for heterosis among experimental hybrids for total yield and mean fruit mass. early yield is conditioned, predominantly, by recessive alleles. the experimental hybrids with a promissing commercial potential were f1 (l-3436 x l-004), f1 (l-3513 x l-004) and f1 (l-3509 x l-004). heterosis values relative to the standard cultivar magali-r-f1 ranged from 7,50% to 49,89% for early yield; 0,45% to 28,55% for total yield; and 3,07% to 47,37% for mean fruit mass.

Acta Scientiarum : Agronomy , 2009,
The lettuce is a plant that features great variability in form, color and texture. The butterleaf variety had remained one of themost consumed lettuce types. The evaluation of leaf type for commercial characters is essential for the development of any improvement program, especially when the parents are divergent types. Furthermore, most cultivars are susceptible to heat. Thus, the objective of the present work was to evaluate F4 progenies of butterleaf lettuce, aiming to select new genotypes for nematode resistance, tolerance to heat and LMV. Twenty-two F3:4 progenieswere originated from crosses involving the ‘Regina 71’ and ‘Salinas 88’ cultivars, previously selected for heat tolerance, nematode resistance and LMV (lettuce mosaic virus). The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design, with four replications. The limb,edge, head formation and the number of days until flowering were evaluated. Among the 22 evaluated progenies, three are butterleaf and may lead to new lettuce lines resistant to rootknot nematodes, heat and LMV.
Interviews with candidates for president transmitted
Wilson Gomes
Revista Compolítica , 2012,
Abstract: In election years, television interviews with presidential candidates, broadcast live, i.e. without the use of editing, have become an important genre of journalistic representation in Brazilian political campaigns. These interviews are conducted in network studios by well-known Brazilian news anchors. The fact that these interviews are transmitted directly to the electorate in an unedited form is generally offered as a guarantee of a genuine, authentic portrayal of the candidates themselves. The present work proposes that live network candidate interviews, rather than a means of political presentation on television, are actually an arena in which the institution of journalism attempts to use rhetorical and argumentative means to control the candidates’ discourse without relying on the traditional advantages conferred in daily news coverage.
