Abstract: three assays were carried out to evaluate the nutritive value of the barnyardgrass seeds (echnochloa spp.) for poultry. in the first assay, twelve adult cockerels were used to determine the true metabolizable energy value corrected by nitrogen retained (tmen), using the forced fed method. in this assay six cockerels were forced fed 30 g of the feed and six cockerels were fastened to determinate metabolic and endogenous losses. in the second assay, twelve cecectomized cockerels were used to determine the true digestibility coefficients of the amino acids in the tested feed, using the same metodology. to determinate the apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen retained (amen) in the thirth assay, the total excreta collection method was used, with 80 growing chicks of commercial strain. the barnyardgrass seed was included in the proportion of 25 percent of the reference diet, which contained 20% cp and 3000 kcal of the me/kg. the reference and test diets were fed to four replicates of ten birds each. the energy values determined were 1813 kcal amen and 1976 kcal of the tmen/kg as fed. the true digestibility coefficients of the essential and non essential amino acids were, in average, 78.2 % and 78.3 %, respectively. the threonine and the lysine shown lower digestibility (65.8 and 67.2%, respectively) and the phenilalanine (86.4%) follow by the methionine (86.0%) presented higher values among essential amino acids. the tyrosine (90.5%) and cystine (56.3%) presented higher and lower digestibility coefficients, respectively, among the non essential amino acids.

Abstract: a trial was carried out to evaluate the effect of sunflower meal inclusion in the broiler diets on the performance, carcass yield and cuts and the economics viability. a randomized block experimental design was used, with five treatments and eight replications of 20 birds per experimental unit. treatments consisted of including 0, 5, 10, 15, or 20% sunflower meal in a basal diet. birds and diets were weighed at the beginning and at the end of each experimental phase (1 to 21 days and 22 to 42 days) to determine feed intake, weight gain, and the feed:gain ratio. two birds per replication were slaughtered at 42 days of age for carcass evaluation. feed intake was linearly reduced in the starter phase (y = 1185.1 - 2.1x; r2 = 0.97), with sunflower meal inclusion in the basal diet, and the feed:gain ratio linearly improved in the total period (y = 1.6404 - 0.0018x; r2 = 0.62), whereas a quadratic effect on the feed:gain ratio was observed in the starter phase (y = 1.3943 - 0.0069x + 0.0002x2; r2 = 0.96). no significant differences were observed for carcass yield and cuts. the best economic performances were achieved when the birds were fed diets containing 5% sunflower meal in the starter phase, and 0% in the grower phase and total period. the inclusion of 20% sunflower meal in the diet of broilers up to 42 days of age did not show harmful effects on performance.

Bertholo, Luciane Cristina;Moreira, Haroldo Wilson;
Jornal Brasileiro de Patologia e Medicina Laboratorial , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S1676-24442006000400004
Abstract: brackground: the hemoglobinopathies are a group of hereditary hemoglobin disorders in worldwide distribution, affecting brazilian population significantly; they are decurrent of alterations in structural genes, responsible for hemoglobin variants, and/or in regulatory genes, resulting the thalassemia. these disorders have been identified in most cases by electrophoretics procedures, and our laboratory experience points out that sometimes they do not obtain enough resolution for a right characterization of mutation. material and method: the objective of this study was to establish a valid laboratory methodology for the characterization of hemoglobins s, c and d in homozygous or heterozygous and possible interactions, based on the allele-specific genic amplification (pcr-ae) with the use in parallel two primers that differ at their 3? extremities and are complementary to the normal or mutated sequences. results and discussion: the results make evident the validation of this methodology in the characterization of these mutations, once this procedure is easy to execute,to reproduce, as well as it is possible to be applied to a significative number of samples.
Extravasation of antineoplastic agents: prevention and treatments
Rita Boschi,Elena Rostagno
Pediatric Reports , 2012, DOI: 10.4081/pr.2012.e28
Abstract: The extravasation of antineoplastic agents is an unwanted and distressing situation that can easily occur. It may cause severe and irreversible local injuries. Left untreated, vesicant chemotherapy extravasation can potentially cause tissue necrosis, functional impairment and permanent disfigurement. This article provides a review of current literature regarding recommendations on the prevention and treatment of extravasation of antineoplastic agents.
Can thymic epithelial cells be infected by human T-lymphotropic virus type 1?
Moreira-Ramos, Klaysa;Castro, Flávia Madeira Monteiro de;Linhares-Lacerda, Leandra;Savino, Wilson;
Memórias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0074-02762011000600018
Abstract: the human t-lymphotropic virus type-1 (htlv-1) is the cause of adult t cell leukaemias/lymphoma. because thymic epithelial cells (tec) express recently defined receptors for the virus, it seemed conceivable that these cells might be a target for htlv-1 infection. we developed an in vitro co-culture system comprising htlv-1+-infected t cells and human tecs. infected t cells did adhere to tecs and, after 24 h, the viral proteins gp46 and p19 were observed in tecs. after incubating tecs with culture supernatants from htlv-1+-infected t cells, we detected gp46 on tec membranes and the htlv-1 tax gene integrated in the tec genome. in conclusion, the human thymic epithelium can be infected in vitro by htlv-1, not only via cell-cell contact, but also via exposure to virus-containing medium.
