Early gastric carcinomas may develop with a molecular profile differing from sporadic carcinomas occurring at a later age. In this study, we analyzed a retrospective series of 88 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma diagnosed before the age of 45 years for the presence of TP53 mutations, clinicopathological features and immunohistochemistry to evaluate the expression of markers considered to be important in gastric carcinogenesis (E-cadherin, β-catenin, MUC1, MUC2, MUC5AC, MUC6 and p53). The majority of proportion of tumors were diffuse-type (70%) and advanced stage (56%). Familial history of cancer was positive in 21% of the cases. There was a significant association between altered expression of E-cadherin and β-catenin, and between p53 expression and perineural invasion. TP53 mutations were detected in 14.5% of evaluated cases, including a germline mutation (p.R337H) in a 12-year old patient. Overall survival analysis showed significant differences in relation with tumor stage and histopathology. The evaluated biomarkers did not present prognostic value in non-exploratory multivariate analyses. The low frequency of TP53 mutations in this series suggests these alterations are not a major molecular event in gastric cancer occurring at early age, although the identification of a case with germline p.R337H mutation is consistent with the hypothesis that a small proportion of early, apparently sporadic gastric cancer, may be associated with widespread Brazilian founder mutations. Further studies are needed to evaluate the prognostic significance of markers for specific groups of patients according to tumor histology and familial history.

Arquivos de Neuro-Psiquiatria , 1990, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-282X1990000200008
Abstract: twenty patients with unilateral neglect syndrome were studied. they were 10 males and 10 females, and they ranged from 29 to 76 years of age. all were submitted to a cat scan of the brain. based on the findings in our sample we drew the following conclusions: the extinction phenomenon was a constant manifestation of unilateral neglect; the line crossing test proved to be most efficient for the identification of visual neglect; the right parietal lobe was the anatomical region most often involved in the unilateral neglect syndrome.
Histological comparison of the alar nasal cartilages in unilateral cleft lip

Revista do Hospital das Clínicas , 2002,
Abstract: Patients with unilateral cleft lip display characteristic nasal changes that are independent of the degree of deformity. Defenders of the intrinsic theory consider these deformities to be due to embryogenic alterations of the alar nasal cartilages. Those that propose the extrinsic theory defend the thesis that the deformity is due to disorganization of the perioral muscles deformed by the cleft. The purpose of this study is to contribute histological evidence to help clarify the issue. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Specimens of the lateral portion of both the healthy and the cleft side of the alar cartilages were obtained from 18 patients. These uniformly cut specimens were stained by hematoxylin and eosin. Samples from 2 patients were excluded due to imperfections. The same pathologist examined all the slides. He was unaware of the origins of the specimens; he counted the number of chondrocytes and quantified the cartilage matrixes. RESULTS: All data was analyzed statistically, and no significant statistical differences were apparent, either in the number of chondrocytes or the cartilage matrix between the healthy side and the cleft side. DISCUSSION: These results apparently support the group that defend the extrinsic theory; nevertheless, the doubt about the composition of the cartilage matrix remains, not only concerning the glycosaminoglycans that compose them, but also regarding elastin and collagen and its linkages that can cause different degrees of collagen consistency.
Austrolebias paucisquama (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae), a new species of annual killifish from southern Brazil

Neotropical Ichthyology , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S1679-62252008000200004
Abstract: austrolebias paucisquama is described from the rio vacacaí drainage, a tributary to the rio jacuí, rio grande do sul, brazil. the new species belongs to the austrolebias alexandri species-group, by sharing the apomorphic bright blue iridescence and dark gray pectoral fins in males. it is distinguished from other species of this group by having fewer scales around caudal peduncle (12) and fewer dorsal-fin rays in males (17-21). the lack of contact organs on the inner surface of the pectoral fin in males and the color pattern of females - ground color light brownish, sides of body with a variable number of relatively large dark black spots distributed mostly on posterior portion of body - distinguish a. paucisquama from all other species of the genus.

Abstract: this article shows main analysis about changes that have taken place within labor around the world over the last three decades. it notices the influence over the unions? work in developed countries. it tries to understand unions? movements - regarding one part of the labor relationship - by reorganizing themselves within a scenario in which the importance of international union cooperation activities grew. it shows organizations of international union cooperation changed by increasing their influence in brazil. economically speaking, in order to understand how companies take decisions at national and international level, one must know about union movements.

Abstract: two cases of hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2 are reported. this type of neuropathy is included in a group that consists of five different entities. the systematization of that neuropathies depends on multiple criteria such as age of beginning, genetic aspects, clinical manifestations, eletroneuromyographic and pathologic features. in this report we describe the cases in a family, two brothers, 27 and 35 years old that were observed in our department with pain insensibility and consequent sensitive-trophic disturbs and deformity of members. the diagnoses was defined as hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 2 and an inherited pattern recessive autossomic transmission was considered. the age of beginning, the hereditary aspects, the clinical manifestations and the eletroneuromyographic features are analysed. the differential diagnoses with other sensory hereditary and acquired neuropathies is emphasized.

Abstract: Dois casos de neuropatia sensitiva e auton mica hereditária do tipo 2 s o descritos.
