Abstract: Headache associated with Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) is a known condition; however, its incidence and etiology are not well defined. In this study, we determined the incidence and evaluated the characteristics of headache following CEA. This prospective study was conducted between January and July 2009, in 32 patients submitted to CEA. 68.7% of patients were male; mean age was 67.3 years-old. Headache incidence was 37.5%, ipsilateral to the CEA in 91% of patients; pressure was the most common pain quality (81.2%) and affected the frontal region alone in 37.5% of headache episodes. All headache episodes were of mild intensity. No correlation (p > 0.05) was found between sexes and no significant value (p > 0.05) was determined between the presence of headache and the mean degree of stenosis in the ipsilateral and contralateral carotid operated. Headache following CEA is a common condition; in most cases it is ipsilateral to the procedure, pressure type, mild and self-limiting.

Eccos Revista Científica , 2012,
Abstract: The teaching of music was always present during the periods of the history of the Brazilian education, but during the first half of the twentieth century, had a boom especially after the defense of the movement of educators of the new school, as the teachers Fernando de Azevedo and Anísio Teixeira and as the musician and conductor Heitor Villa-Lobos. In this article are discussed the process of recovery and the deployment of teaching music and chorus singing in the Brazilian schools. It tries to analyze the discourse of these characters, their ideas concerning music education, as well as their purposes, their advantages and their relations with the modern school.
The Development of Decision-Making Maps for the High-Speed Machining (HSM) of Rhyodacite (Carijó Basalt) in Milling-Based Processing Applications  [PDF]

Modern Mechanical Engineering (MME) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/mme.2013.34025
Abstract:

The demand for innovative products that overcome competitive pricing and conquer market shares can be met by interdisciplinary approaches that bridge product design, engineering and technology. Ornamental and covering stones stand out among the materials in need of innovation and are commonly used in architecture and construction as coverings in urban elements, funerary art, and art and decor. In spite of the many applications of ornamental stones, products with low added value are typically observed. Although Brazil displays significant geological potential for ornamental stones, its actual market participation is as a supplier of un- or semi-processed stones. Even with the market’s visible expansion and Brazil’s increased representation in the market, the technological advances used in the final processing of stones are restricted to improve the tools used for cutting, especially the durability of diamond-coated tools, and for polishing, which, in the short-term, meets the demands for marketing, producing and distributing semi-finished products. Accordingly, a little exploited aspect of ornamental stones appears, especially for “carijó basalt” (rhyodacite), that is, the inclusion of new processing and value-adding technologies or the inclusion of non-conventional processes in the sector. The goals of this work are to study and develop HSM (high speed machining) CNC (computer numerically controlled) milling processes that are applicable to rhyodacite, specifically to determine the milling parameters that give the best results for machining time with respect to tool wear and material abrasion and to replicate the results obtained in the samples. The results show that the raw material used in the present study, because it is natural, presents significant variations in composition and hardness, which prevent specific milling parameters from being determined. However, using a post-processor specifically developed for this study, it was possible to draft a decision-making map

A constru??o da oposi??o entre Lamarck e Darwin e a vincula??o de Nietzsche ao eugenismo
Frezzatti Júnior, Wilson Antonio;
Scientiae Studia , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S1678-31662011000400004
Abstract: the construction of the total opposition between the lamarckian and the darwinian evolutionary theories was employed to classify authors scientists or not _ who wrote about evolution in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. claire richter, in nietzsche et les theories biologiques contemporaines (1911), argues that nietzsche's lamarckism is very pronounced, and, for this, she distinguishes what is properly darwinian or lamarckian. in our article, we want to understand why this distinction was applied to a philosopher like nietzsche. the key issue is the difference made by richter between the natural selection and the inheritance of acquired characteristics and the relationship that she establishes between these notions and the eugenics. her goal is to show nietzsche to be an early and leading advocate of eugenics. her effort to demonstrate that nietzsche's thought is lamarckian serves for the dissemination of eugenicists ideas. the inheritance of acquired characteristics can support and justify the social and educational measures to improve the race, because it is faster than the natural selection to modify living beings.

Revista Brasileira de Ginecologia e Obstetrícia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-72032010001100002
Abstract: purpose: to evaluate the characteristics of the menstrual cycle and to identify the occurrence of ovulation in nulliparous young women with sickle cell anemia (sca). methods: we conducted a case-control study including 26 nulliparous women of reproductive age, divided into two groups: "cases", consisting of 13 women with sca, and "control" group, consisting of 13 healthy women with the same interval since menarche. the characteristics of the menstrual cycle were reported by the participants, who were also submitted to measurements of serum progesterone, basal body temperature curves and transabdominal ultrasound in three consecutive cycles (total: 78 cycles) in order to identify the occurrence of ovulation. the results were compared between groups using the nonparametric mann-whitney or kruskal wallis tests, and the differences were considered significant when p-value < 0.05. results: no significant difference was found in mean chronological age between the two groups (p = 0.2) in the pattern of the menstrual cycle when duration of flow (p = 0.4) and interval between cycles (p = 0.3) were compared. there was no difference between groups in age at menarche (p = 0.05). mean hemoglobin value was 8.4 g/dl (± 0.9) in the group of women with sca and 12.6 g/dl (± 0.8) in the control group (p < 0.01). the frequency of ovulatory cycles was similar for cases (76.9%) and controls (92.3%) (p = 0.5), with a predominance of individuals with three ovulatory cycles in the control group (84.6%) compared to 23.1% in the case group (p = 0.04). conclusion: the findings justify the need for effective guidance for patients with sca regarding sexual activity, the possibility of pregnancy and the alternatives for contraception.
