Growth Characteristic of the Oleaginous Mi-croalga Chlorella ellipsoidea SD-0701 with Lipid Accumulation  [PDF]

Abstract: Microalgae have great advantages as a new biomass source for fuel production. But microalgae are photosynthetic microorganisms, which normally grow in the light. Because of this growth condition, the commercial viability of microalgal biofuel is limited by current production systems. To obtain microalgal biofuel, fermentation is a more convenient, more economical and practical industry model. In this study, we asked whether and why the dark fermentation of C. ellipsoidea SD-0701 could be achieved by changing the culture medium formula. We focused the research on carbon-containing compounds and the initial pH of media. The results indicated that glucose was the optimum carbon-containing compound, which provided C. ellipsoidea SD-0701 with energy and carbon skeleton for accumulating organic compounds including lipids. When C. ellipsoidea SD-0701 was cultivated in the add-nutrition medium containing glucose, the optimum initial pH for the growth of C. ellipsoidea SD-0701 was pH 7.71. Therefore, if the suitable medium is used, C. ellipsoidea SD-0701 can grow normally in the dark, which is the same condition as the fermenter, and high microalgal biomass (0.50 g·L-1) and lipid yield (232.90 mg·L-1) can be achieved.
Evaluation of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery for Pulmonary Metastases: A Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background To evaluate the evidence comparing video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and open thoracotomy in the treatment of metastatic lung cancer using meta-analytical techniques. Methods A literature search was undertaken until July 2013 to identify the comparative studies evaluating disease-free survival rates and survival rates. The pooled odds ratios (OR) and the 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated with the fixed or random effect models. Results Six retrospective studies were included in our meta-analysis. These studies included a total of 546 patients: 235 patients were treated with VATS, and 311 patients were treated with open thoracotomy. The VATS and the thoracotomy did not demonstrate a significant difference in the 1-,3-,5-year survival rates and the 1-year disease-free survival rate. There were significant statistical differences between the 3-year disease free survival rate (p = 0.04), which favored open thoracotomy. Conclusions The VATS approach is a safe and feasible treatment in terms of the survival rate for metastatic lung cancer compared with the thoracotomy. The 3-year disease-free survival rate in the VATS group is inferior to that of open thoracotomy. The VATS approach could not completely replace open thoracotomy.

Comparison of Spatiotemporal Fusion Models for Producing High Spatiotemporal Resolution Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Time Series Data Sets  [PDF]

It has a great significance to combine multi-source with different spatial resolution and temporal resolution to produce high spatiotemporal resolution Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series data sets. In this study, four spatiotemporal fusion models were analyzed and compared with each other. The models included the spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance model (STARFM), the enhanced spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (ESTARFM), the flexible spatiotemporal data fusion model (FSDAF), and a spatiotemporal vegetation index image fusion model (STVIFM). The objective of is to: 1) compare four fusion models using Landsat-MODIS NDVI image from the Banan district, Chongqing Province; 2) analyze the prediction accuracy quantitatively and visually. Results indicate that STVIFM would be more suitable to produce NDVI time series data sets.
Effects of Nitrogen Addition on the Mixed Litter Decomposition in Stipa baicalensis Steppe in Inner Mongolia  [PDF]

Abstract: During the past two centuries, global changes (i.e., enhanced nitrogen deposition) have exerted profound effects on ecological processes of steppe ecosystems. We used litterbag method and mixed litters of three different plant species tissues (Stipa baicalensis: Sb, Leymus chinensis: Lc and Artemisia frigid: Af), endemic to Stipa baicalensis Steppe, and measured the mass loss of mixtures over 417 days under the N addition treatment. We studied the effect of N addition (N0: no N addition; N15: 1.5 g N/m2·a; N30: 3.0 g N/m2·a; N50: 5.0 g N/m2·a; N100: 10.0 g N/m2·a; N150: 15.0 g N/m2·a) on the rate of mixed litter decomposition and nutrient dynamics change. The decomposition constant (k) of leaf mixtures was higher than that of root mixtures. The k values of leaf mixed combinations were 0.880 (Sb + Lc), 1.231 (Lc + Af), 1.027 (Sb + Lc + Af), respectively. The k value of stem was 0.806 (Lc + Af) and the root mixed combinations were 0.665 (Sb + Lc), 0.979 (Lc + Af) and 1.164 (Sb + Lc + Af), respectively. The results indicated that N addition had significantly effect on the mixed litter decomposition and nutrient releasing. The rate of plant tissues litter decomposition had different response to N addition. In the context of N addition, litter decomposition rate and nutrient dynamics were changed by synthetic effect of decaying time, specie types and N addition dose. Our findings suggested that prairie plants may adapt to environmental change by adjusting litter quality, thus retaining the stability of the steppe ecosystem.

Abstract: This paper described that the growth of cotton yield per mu in Hubei province is greater in the north than in the south .Analysing the relations between the cotton yield and rainfall, the author discovers that the quality of rainfall and the degree of drought or waterlogging are the main factors affecting cotton yields.The years in which the average yield per mu dropped 15% were those when the rainfall between June and August was abnormal while the years in which the average yield increased more than 20% were years when the rainfall in these three months were normal .In years of excessive rain, the rainfall between June and August was more in the south than in the north, and in years of drought, in reveres, so the calamities of drought or waterlogging were more severe in the south than in the north .However in years of good harvest, the rainfall was adequate and had not much difference between the north and the south.By calculating the variability of rainfall between June and August, the author finds that the variability of rainfall is also greater in the south than in the north This shows that the rainfall is less changing in the north than in the south, and coincides with the fact that happens drought or waterlogging in the successive years.Approaching the ratio of input and output which is a good economic index, the author demonstrates that the economic benefit in the north is greater than in the south.Based on the above analysis and in consideration of the rational distribution of cotton fields the paper expounded a strategic assumption of shifting northward the cotton fields in Hubei province.

Abstract: For a lattice $\Lambda$ with $n$ vertices and dimension $d$ equal or higher than two, the number of spanning trees $N_{ST}(\Lambda)$ grows asymptotically as $\exp(n z_\Lambda)$ in the thermodynamic limit. We present exact integral expressions for the asymptotic growth constant $z_\Lambda$ for spanning trees on several lattices. By taking different unit cells in the calculation, many integration identities can be obtained. We also give $z_{\Lambda (p)}$ on the homeomorphic expansion of $k$-regular lattices with $p$ vertices inserted on each edge.

Global Strong Solutions to Incompressible Ericksen-Leslie System in $\mathbb R^3$

Abstract: In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem to the Ericksen-Leslie system of liquid crystals in $\mathbb R^3$. Global well-posedness of strong solutions are obtained under the condition that the product of $\|u_0\|_2+\|\nabla d_0\|_2$ and $\|\nabla u_0\|_2+\|\nabla^2d_0\|_2$ is suitably small. This result can be viewed as a supplement to the local existence and blow up criteria discussed in \cite{Hong1}.
