Web-Based Annotation Learning System: Construction and Application  [PDF]

Abstract: Nowadays many web-based learning materials are presented by hypertext, and the effect of on-line reading has been playing a chief role to the learning outcomes. However, with the information and networking technology changing, reading habits are much more different than before, and hypertext reading has some problems that impede reading efficiency. The research is based on the ground to develop a web-based “annotation learning system”. By using this web-based learning system as a strategy, learner can interact with learning materials and instructors, also make learner to actively explore contents. The result shows that students have high propensity to the system, and most of them feel the system is easy to use. Also, they have positive response that the system can facilitate reading on the hypertext.
Effect of student engagement on multimedia-assisted instruction

Abstract: This study applied multimedia in a general engineering and technology course in Taiwan and evaluated the effectiveness of multimedia-assisted instruction and learning. The course presented trends in technological development and the achievements of Taiwanese industries and research institutes from a historical perspective, and overviewed the technology industries and industrial transformation development in Taiwan. The course units adopted multimedia to support class teaching and student learning, and a survey was conducted to collect students’ attitudes and perception toward multimedia-assisted instruction and learning in the course. Research data were collected from 45 male and 9 female students with varied academic and cultural backgrounds. Results showed that multimedia videos help raise students’ awareness of learning issues, improve their understanding of content, and increase the depth of their learning. Almost all students liked the approach of using multimedia to assist teaching and learning, preferring this approach over traditional lecture-based instruction. They also would recommend this course to their peers. This study also found that the degree of students’ engagement caused variance in the students’ perception of multimedia helpfulness in assisting their learning. Finally, this study further proposes suggestions in both design and research on applications of multimedia-enhanced learning in engineering and technology education.
Phase Identification Using Series of Selected Area Diffraction Patterns and Energy Dispersive Spectrometry within TEM  [PDF]

Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) is a very powerful technique for materials characteriza-tion, providing information relating to morphology, composition, and crystal structure. Selected area diffraction patterns (SADPs) are crystallographic data that can be obtained using a TEM in-strument. Conventional identification through SADP/TEM is tricky and tedious, thereby increasing the difficulty of phase identification. To establish a procedure for phase identification of known and unknown phases, in this study we examined two samples: one, a known phase, was Si with <100> alignment; the other, unknown, was the TixOy phase at the 96.4Au-3Ni-0.6Ti interlayer/ yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) interface of a steel/96.4Au-3Ni-0.6Ti interlayer/YSZ joint. The procedures for phase identification of the known and unknown phases are described herein using a series of SADPs and energy dispersive spectrometry within TEM that would be useful for general researchers.
Research on the Impact of Supply Chain Integration of Startups: Service Supply Chain Perspective  [PDF]

As the potential power of social economic development, the importance of startups has attracted more and more attention from academia. The service supply chain, led by the service integrator, can help the startups to improve the performance of the enterprise, achieve better supply chain integration, and go through their “infancy” period successfully. However, the research about the factors that influence the integration of service supply chain and how these factors affect the supply chain integration of startups remains to be explored. Based on the practical problems and theoretical research status above, this study constructs a theoretical hypothesis model of the relationship between interaction, supply chain finance and supply chain integration, and we take the survey data of 65 startups in Pearl River Delta of China as samples and use hierarchical regression analysis to carry out hypothesis testing. The result shows that, from the perspective of startups, interaction has a positive impact on supplier integration, internal integration and customer integration, and supply chain finance has a positive impact on internal integration. The main significance of this study is to make up for the vacancy on this part of the academic community in the service supply chain, and help provide some reference basis for start-up enterprises’ supply chain integration.

Abstract: Dam construction is an important engineering measure in dealing with the relationship between water and human being. However, with dam construction, some disadvantages to the river basin may be caused, including flow flux of downstream changed, flooded area reduced, river species and other organisms changed and substance sedimentation. Furthermore, it brings some diseases to human being and human residential areas reduced too. Based on the basic principles of ecohydralic engineering, some countermeasures to minimize the negative effects on rivers were put forward. They are reservoir ecological regulation, ecohydraulic engineering construction and comprehensive water pollution treatment.
Disciplinization of History Education in Modern China: A Study of History Education in the Imperial University of Peking (1898-1911)  [PDF]

Abstract: Through a thorough investigation on the history education in the Imperial University of Peking from 1898 to 1911, this paper attempts to highlight the following findings. 1) The disciplinization of history education and the transformation of traditional historiography were concurrently incepted in the late Qing period. The Imperial University of Peking served as a pivotal platform for the realization of this synchronous process. 2) History instructors and students of this university can be regarded as initial participants in the new school system, as well as pioneering practitioners of the New History. 3) Zhongti xiyong, as the fundamental tenet of this university, in actual practice, was utilized as a slogan for justifying the introduction of Western learning. 4) Japan exerted tremendous influence on the history education at this university through sending history instructors and “re-exporting” new historical methods to China. 5) During the period discussed, there were in total twenty history instructors at this university. Their qualifications were commendable. 6) Regulations concerning history curriculum design, instruction and examination of the university assumed the task of alleviating the political and economic ordeals of China. Nonetheless, as with other reforms in the late Qing era, the government’s reformation efforts in this university could not rescue it from the predicament of “negative repercussions”.

Abstract: The SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises) play important role in the economy. However, the financing problem is a big difficulty, which has plagued the SMEs’ development. Information asymmetry is the main reason for the SMEs’ gaining funds so hard. The information asymmetry between banks and enterprises is that banks do not know the operating conditions and credit situation of SMEs. Then, to some extent, the banks are reluctant to support credit for businesses under the circumstance of lacking appropriate information, resulting in a “credit crunch” behavior. Therefore, the main measures of solving SMEs’ financing difficulty are to overcome the information asymmetry in the process of SME financing by establishing effective information mechanisms, the credibility and restraint mechanisms, strengthening the construction of credit rating agencies, and promoting the mutual exchange of information.

3-D Modelling of the Confederation Bridge Using Data of Full Scale Tests  [PDF]

Long-span bridges are special structures that require advanced analysis techniques to examine their performance. This paper presents a procedure developed to model the Confederation Bridge using 3-D beam elements. The model was validated using the data collected before the opening of the bridge to the public. The bridge was instrumented to conduct fullscale static and dynamic tests. The static tests were to measure the deflection of the bridge pier while the dynamic tests to measure the free vibrations of the pier due to a sudden release of the static load. Confederation Bridge is one of the longest reinforced concrete bridges in the world. It connects the province of Prince Edward Island and the province of New Brunswick in Canada. Due to its strategic location and vital role as a transportation link between these two provinces, it was designed using higher safety factors than those for typical highway bridges. After validating the present numerical model, a procedure was developed to evaluate the performance of similar bridges subjected to traffic and seismic loads. It is of interest to note that the foundation stiffness and the modulus of elasticity of the concrete have significant effects on the structural responses of the Confederation Bridge.
