A Review of Land Ecological Security Evaluation in China

Abstract: Land ecological security evaluation is not only the core and foundation of land resources’ sustainable utilization, but also the key reference of land planning, management and protection of decision-making. Research on land ecological security evaluation has become a hot field in the land ecological security problems since the late 1990s. A review was performed of existing progress on land ecological security evaluation in China. Three main questions arise: a) the spatial scale evaluation is not deep and wide, and the time scale evaluation most for static evaluation. b) Construction of index system has strong subjectivity, and what indicators are to be used to describe land ecological security. Most approaches aim at a single or limited number of indices for land ecological security, for data availability reasons. c) Innovation and the comparisons are lacked between the evaluation methods. Dynamic evaluation, objective evaluation indexes, integrated evaluation methods are however required.
Midgut volvulus due to jejunal diverticula: A case report

Abstract: Jejunal diverticulosis is uncommon and often asymptomatic. It can produce significant complications, and some complications are potentially life threatening and require early surgical treatment, such as obstruction, hemorrhage and perforation. There is no consensus on the management of this disease. Only a few cases of jejunal diverticulosis with midgut volvulus have been reported. We herein report a case of 57-year-old woman with jejunal diverticulosis causing small bowel volvulus who complained of intermittent upper abdominal pin-prick for 5 years that eventually progressed to a complete obstruction. The computed tomography scans revealed a mesenteric vessel "whirlpool" and laparotomy showed midgut volvulus secondary to jejunal diverticula. This case highlights jejunal diverticulosis causing small bowel volvulus as an uncommon mechanism of small bowel obstruction, which should be included in the differential diagnosis of small bowel obstruction.

Abstract: The microbial immobilization method using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) gel as an immobilizing material was improved and used for entrapment of activated sludge. The OUR (oxygen uptake rate) was used to characterize the biological activity of immobilized activated sludge. Three kinds of PVA-immobilized particles of activated sludge, that is, PVA-boric acid beads, PVA-sodium nitrate beads and PVA-orthophosphate beads was prepared, and their biological activity was compared by measuring the OUR value. The bioactivity of both autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms of activated sludge was determined using different synthetic wastewater media (containing 250 mg/L COD and 25 mg/L NH4 -N). The experimental results showed that the bioactivity and stability of the three kinds of immobilized activated sludge was greatly improved after activation. With respect of the bioactivity and the mechanical stability, the PVA-orthophosphate method may be a promising and economical technique for microbial immobilization.

Abstract: The formal variable separation approach is developed to find multiple solitary wave solutions for nonintegrable models. Especially, using the formal variable separation approach to three nonlinear equation systems, generalized Whitham-Broer-Kaup equation, 2+1 dimensional Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation and the 1+1 dimensional coupled KdV equation, which describe the shallow water waves, we have found out some explicit analytical multiple solitary wave solutions for these systems.
Epigenetics of hypoxic pulmonary arterial hypertension following intrauterine growth retardation rat: epigenetics in PAH following IUGR

Abstract: Background Accumulating evidence reveals that intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) can cause varying degrees of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) later in life. Moreover, epigenetics plays an important role in the fetal origin of adult disease. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of epigenetics in the development of PAH following IUGR. Methods The IUGR rats were established by maternal undernutrition during pregnancy. Pulmonary vascular endothelial cells (PVEC) were isolated from the rat lungs by magnetic-activated cell sorting (MACS). We investigated epigenetic regulation of the endothelin-1 (ET-1) gene in PVEC of 1-day and 6-week IUGR rats, and response of IUGR rats to hypoxia. Results The maternal nutrient restriction increased the histone acetylation and hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) binding levels in the ET-1 gene promoter of PVEC in IUGR newborn rats, and continued up to 6 weeks after birth. These epigenetic changes could result in an IUGR rat being highly sensitive to hypoxia later in life, causing more significant PAH or pulmonary vascular remodeling. Conclusions These findings suggest that epigenetics is closely associated with the development of hypoxic PAH following IUGR, further providing a new insight for improved prevention and treatment of IUGR-related PAH.
Wenxiang: a web-server for drawing wenxiang diagrams  [PDF]

Abstract: The wenxiang diagram was proposed to represent α-helices in a 2D (two dimensional) space (Chou, K.C., Zhang, C.T., Maggiora, G.M. Proteins: Struct., Funct., Genet., 1997, 28, 99-108). It has the capacity to provide more information in a 2D plane about each of the constituent amino acid residues in an α-helix, and is particularly useful for studying and analyzing amphiphilic helices. To meet the increasing requests for getting the program of generating wenxiang diagrams, a user-friendly web-server called “Wenxiang” has been established. It is accessible to the public at the web-site http://www.jci-bioinfo.cn/wenxiang2 or http://icpr.jci.edu.cn/bioinfo/wenxiang2. Further- more, for the convenience of users, here we provide a step-to-step guide for how to use the Wenxiang web-server to generate the desired wenxiang diagrams.
Interactive Shape Modification of C-C Subdivision Surfaces

Abstract: To improve modeling ability of subdivision surfaces, interactive shape modification algorithms for C-C subdivision surfaces are discussed. The constraints of points, normal vectors and local isoparametric curves on C-C surfaces, which can be converted into those on control vertices, are specified via setting up local coordinate systems in real-time operation. A global linear system is obtained and the shape of C-C subdivision surfaces can be modified with the various geometric constraints. Two methods based on least-square and energy optimization are presented. The former minimizes the total variation of control vertices. It is fast and suits for local, precise modification. The latter gives the optimal solution to the energy equation with penalty function method and it is a global modification with good fairness. Both methods can be solved explicitly by a pseudo-inverse matrix and are of invertible, commutative, and associative properties, which enhance the efficiency and controllability of the manipulation.
On $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra and integrable system

Abstract: We construct the $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra and investigate the relation between this infinite-dimensional 3-algebra and the integrable systems. Since the $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra with a fixed generator $W^0_0$ in the operator Nambu 3-bracket recovers the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, it is natural to derive the KP hierarchy from the Nambu-Poisson evolution equation. For the general case of the $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra, we directly derive the KP and KdV equations from the Nambu-Poisson evolution equation with the different Hamiltonian pairs. We also discuss the connection between the $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra and the dispersionless KdV equations. Due to the Nambu-Poisson evolution equation involves two Hamiltonians, the deep relationship between the Hamiltonian pairs of KP hierarchy is revealed. Furthermore we give a realization of $W_{1+\infty}$ 3-algebra in terms of a complex bosonic field. Based on the Nambu 3-brackets of the complex bosonic field, we derive the (generalized) nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation and give an application in optical soliton.
A virus immunization model based on community in large scale networks

Abstract: With the development of computers and Internet, more and more people use E-mail. Viruses of E-mail have caused large damages. Traditional intentional immunization based on degree does not take the positions of infected nodes into account, but just protects the nodes which have high degree. The concept of community was introduced into the research of virus and immunization, and an immunization model based on community was proposed. According to the different infection stages of viruses, this model immunized infected communities or health communities. It slowed down the virus spread rate and kept the virus from spreading to more communities. Intentional immunization based on degree can not keep the virus in certain communities, and as a result the infected nodes diffuse in almost all communities. Immunization based on community can keep the virus in certain communities. These two models are different in the number of nodes that need to be protected, and in community infection rate. So, immunization based on community is different from that based on degree in terms of principle, and it is novel and effective.
