Antifungal Activities of Commercial Rice Wine Extracts of Taiwanese Allium fistulosum  [PDF]

Abstract: Antifungal activities of the commercial rice wine extracts of Allium fistulosum were analyzed. Antifungal activities were tested against 7 pathogenic fungi by using agar disc diffusion and tube dilution tests. The results show that the commercial rice wine extracts of Allium fistulosum have strong antifungal activity against Aspergillus brasiliensis ATCC 16404, Candida albicans ATCC 10231, Microsporumcanis ATCC 36299, M. gypseum ATCC 24102, Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 9533, T. rubrum ATCC 28188, and T. tonsurans ATCC 28942. The commercial rice wine extracts of different A. fistulosum parts were found to exhibit significant antifungal activities with the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) in the range of 0.2 - 1.0 mg/mL. Effects of ursolic acid in ameliorating insulin resistance in liver of KKAy mice via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors α and γ

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects and mechanism of ursolic acid in improving hepatic insulin resistance in KKAy mice with spontaneous type 2 diabetes.METHODS: Thirty-five KKAy mice were divided into five groups according to the randomized block design, namely, control, rosiglitazone, fenofibrate, and high- and low-dose ursolic acid groups with seven mice in each group. C57BL/6J mice were used as the normal control group. At the end of the 4th week, free fatty acid (FFA), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and adiponectin contents in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; the protein expressions of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), insulin receptor substrate-2 (IRS-2) and glucose transport factor-2 (GLUT-2) were detected by Western blot method; the mRNA expressions of PEPCK, IRS-2 and GLUT-2 were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction; the expressions of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) in liver tissue were detected by immunohistochemical method.RESULTS: After four weeks of intervention, the contents of FFA, TNF-α and adiponectin in serum of the high-dose ursolic acid group had changed, showing statistically significant difference compared to those of the control group (P<0.01); high dose of ursolic acid had depressant effect on the expressions of PEPCK protein and PEPCK mRNA (P<0.01); low dose of ursolic acid depressed the expression of PEPCK mRNA and induced phosphorylation of IRS-2 in the liver (P<0.05); both high and low dose of ursolic acid improved the expression of PPARα in the liver (P<0.01).CONCLUSION: The effects of ursolic acid in improving hepatic insulin resistance in KKAy mice with spontaneous type 2 diabetes may be closely related to affecting the contents of FFA, TNF-α and adiponectin, improving the expression of PPARα protein, regulating transcription of PEPCK protein and inducing phosphorylation of IRS-2.

Abstract: In wireless network, terminals are usually energy constrained. In order to extend the lifetime of the terminal, the limited energy must be utilized in an efficient manner. In this paper, under the constant transmission power scenario, we propose an Energy Efficient Transmission Policy (EETP) which is derived by using Markov Decision Process (MDP). The simulation results show that compared with the Threshold Transmission Policy (TTP), the proposed policy can reduce the energy consumption significantly, while satisfying the performance demand at the same time.
Bayesian Multi-Scale Optimistic Optimization

Abstract: Bayesian optimization is a powerful global optimization technique for expensive black-box functions. One of its shortcomings is that it requires auxiliary optimization of an acquisition function at each iteration. This auxiliary optimization can be costly and very hard to carry out in practice. Moreover, it creates serious theoretical concerns, as most of the convergence results assume that the exact optimum of the acquisition function can be found. In this paper, we introduce a new technique for efficient global optimization that combines Gaussian process confidence bounds and treed simultaneous optimistic optimization to eliminate the need for auxiliary optimization of acquisition functions. The experiments with global optimization benchmarks and a novel application to automatic information extraction demonstrate that the resulting technique is more efficient than the two approaches from which it draws inspiration. Unlike most theoretical analyses of Bayesian optimization with Gaussian processes, our finite-time convergence rate proofs do not require exact optimization of an acquisition function. That is, our approach eliminates the unsatisfactory assumption that a difficult, potentially NP-hard, problem has to be solved in order to obtain vanishing regret rates.

Abstract: This paper introduces uncertainty theory to deal with non-deterministic factors in ranking alternatives. The uncertain variable method (UVM) and the definition of consistency for uncertainty comparison matrices are proposed. A simple yet pragmatic approach for testing whether or not an uncertainty comparison matrix is consistent is put forward. In cases where an uncertainty comparison matrix is inconsistent, an algorithm is used to generate consistent matrix. And then the consistent uncertainty comparison matrix can derive the uncertainty weights. The final ranking is given by uncertainty weighs if they are acceptable; otherwise we rely on the ranks of expected values of uncertainty weights instead. Three numerical examples including a hierarchical (AHP) decision problem are examined to illustrate the validity and practicality of the proposed methods.

Abstract: Poor visibility in bad weather, such as haze and fog, is a major problem for many applications of computer vision. Thus, haze removal is highly required for receiving high performance of the vision algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new fast dehazing method for real-time image and video processing. The transmission map estimated by an improved guided filtering scheme is smooth and respect with depth information of the underlying image. Results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves good dehazeing effect as well as real-time performance. The proposed algorithm, due to its speed and ability to improve visibility, may be used with advantages as pre-processing in many systems ranging from surveillance, intelligent vehicles, to remote sensing.

Abstract: Financial ratio analysis is an analysis of a company’s financial statements, and it is vital for identifying negative and positive trends of a business over time. This article sets out to provide a detailed analysis of the financial performance of J Sainsbury plc and compare it with the performance of Tesco and Morrisons. From the data analysis, it can be shown that from 2015, the financial performance of J Sainsbury plc is improving with an increasing trend in its sales revenue and gross margin, while there is a decreasing trend in its return on assets (ROA), operating profit, pretax profit margin, finance cost and net profit. Compared to the other two companies in the same industry like Tesco and Morrisons, the performance of J Sainsbury plc is somewhat satisfactory. Finally, some recommendations on financial aspects, business environment and strategies are offered to enhance J Sainsbury plc’s performance and promote its sustainable development.

Abstract: An environmentally benign process was devel-oped for the transesterification of Jatropha curcas L. seed oil with methanol using artificial zeolites loaded with potassium acetate as a heterogeneous catalyst. After calcination for 5 h at 823 K, the catalyst loaded with 47 wt.% CH3COOK exhibited the highest efficiency and best catalytic activity. The easily prepared cata-lysts were characterized by means of X-ray dif-fraction and IR spectroscopy, as well as Hammett indicator titration. The results revealed a strong dependence of catalytic activity on ba-sicity. The optimum reaction conditions for transesterification of J. curcas oil were also in-vestigated. The methyl ester content in the bio-diesel product exceeded 91% after 4h reaction at reflux temperature in the presence of 2% solid catalyst and no water washing process is needed during workup.
Serological survey of Toxoplasma gondii in Tibetan mastiffs (Canis lupus familiaris) and yaks (Bos grunniens) in Qinghai, China

Abstract: The indirect hemagglutination test (IHAT) was used to examine T. gondii antibodies in 1 795 serums, including 192 Tibetan mastiffs and 1603 yaks in Qinghai Province, China.In this study, the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection was 8.52%. Twenty (10.42%) of 192 serums of Tibetan mastiffs and 133 (8.30%) of 1603 serums of yaks were seropositive. The seroprevalence of T.gondii infection in Tibetan mastiffs in breeding farm (1.08%) was lower than that in the field (19.19%), and the difference was statistically significant (P <0.05). The seroprevalence of antibodies to T.gondii in yaks ranged from 5.45% to 13.28% among the four different areas. The seroprevalence in different age groups were determined with apparent association.The results indicated that T.gondii infection was prevalent in Tibetan mastiffs and yaks, which have implications for public health in this region. To our knowledge, this is the first seroprevalence survey of Tibetan mastiffs infected by T. gondii in The People’s Republic of China.
