Abstract: conservation of germinability of cambuci, campomanesia phaea (berg.) landr. (myrtaceae), seeds during storage is of prime importance for their better utilization and for scheduling nursery seedling production of this endangered species. the objetive of this work was to evaluate the effects of temperatures, substrates, desiccation levels and storage conditions on germination of cambuci seeds. trials were carried out over a three-year span, in bod incubators in a completely randomized design. seeds were obtained from mature fruits of eight trees planted in jardim botanico de s?o paulo, s?o paulo state, brazil. vermiculite and filter paper were the best germination substrates in both temperatures, 25oc and 30oc. storage in plastic bags in cold chamber (8±2oc) was superior to storage in paper bags at uncontrolled room temperature. after 240 day storage in plastic bags placed in cold chamber, percent germination of non-desiccated seed was 100%, whereas of seeds desiccated to 3% water content was 83.8%. after 180 days of storage in paper bags at room (uncontrolled) temperature, seeds had 48.8% germination, and germinability was totally lost after 240 days of storage.

Brazilian Journal of Otorhinolaryngology , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/s1808-86942012000400009
Knowledge on the anatomy of the sphenopalatine artery (SPA) and its branches is fundamental for the success of the endoscopic treatment of posterior epistaxis. However, the complex anatomical variations seen in the irrigation of the nasal cavity poses a significant surgical challenge. OBJECTIVE: This paper aims to describe the endoscopic anatomy of the SPA in human cadavers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a contemporary cross-sectional cohort study carried out between April 2010 and August 2011. The presence of the ethmoidal crest on the lamina perpendicular to the palatine bone and the location of the principal sphenopalatine foramen (PSF) and the accessory sphenopalatine foramen (ASF) were analyzed in 28 cadavers, and the branches emerging from the foramens were counted. RESULTS: Fifty-six nasal fossae were analyzed. The ethmoidal crest was present in 96% of the cases and was located anteriorly to the PSF in most cases. The PSF was located in the transition area between the middle and the superior meatus in all cases. The ASF was seen in 12 cases. Most nasal fossae (n = 12) presented a single bilateral arterial trunk emerging from the PSF. In other cases, three (n = 8) or two (n = 5) arterial trunks em

Abstract: the banana genetic breeding program at embrapa cassava and tropical fruits aims to develop and select new banana varieties with high productivity, good fruit flavor and resistance to most banana diseases. the objective of this work was to evaluate banana cultivars and hybrids in order to identify superior genotypes for productivity and disease resistance. the following characteristics were evaluated: plant height (cm); pseudostem diameter (cm); number of living leaves during flowering; and at harvest number of fingers per bunch; bunch weight (kg); mean finger weight (g); finger length (cm); finger diameter (cm); skin thickness (mm); number of days from planting to flowering and number of days from planting to harvesting in the hybrids of the gros michel (calipso, bucaneiro and ambrosia); yangambi (yb42-21 e yb42-17); prata (st42-08 e st12-31) and prata an? (sh3640) and in the cultivars pacovan (prata type) and nanic?o (cavendish type). the experiment was carried out in randomized blocks design, with 10 treatments, five replications and six bushes per plot in the spacing of 2.0 m x 3.0 m. the hybrids evaluated presented agronomic characteristics equal or superior to the corresponding varieties. the best hybrids of the prata, yangambi and gros michel were st12-31, yb42-21 and bucaneiro, respectively.
The Difference in Calcium Levels in Aspergillus nidulans Grown on Glucose or Pectin  [PDF]
Janice Aparecida Rafael, Suraia Said
Advances in Microbiology (AiM) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/aim.2012.22016
Abstract: Understanding the growth regulatory mechanisms in filamentous fungi is very important for the production of medicines for antifungal therapies. It is well established that Ca2+ gradient is essential for hyphal growth and that one mechanism responsible for the Ca2+ cellular concentration starts with the hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) by receptor-regulated forms of phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC). In the present study the levels of calcium in Aspergillus nidulans wild type (A26) and plcA-deficient mutant (AP27) growing in a carbon source readily assimilated, as glucose or pectin a non-readily assimilated carbon source was investigated. Intracellular calcium levels in A26 were higher in the presence of glucose than in pectin, but lower in AP27 independently of the carbon source and in AP27 the vesicular calcium distribution occurred mainly at the apex of the hyphae. Delay in nuclear division was also observed if A26 and AP27 were grown in pectin presence when compared with growth in glucose. For the first time, it is demonstrated that the levels of intracellular Ca2+ were higher when A. nidulans was growing in glucose than in a non readily assimilated carbon source as pectin. Further, it also showed that the plcA gene, although not essential, may be responsible for high-molecular weight carbon source recongnation, for the intracellular Ca2+ levels maintenance and consequently by the nuclear division in A. nidulans.

Psychology (PSYCH) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/psych.2016.714169
Abstract: The use of Response to Intervention Model (RTI) has been described in the literature as an important tool for early identification of students at risk of learning problems. However, such studies are rare in the Brazilian population. This study aimed to use the response to intervention model (RTI) as an early identification procedure for Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) students from 1st grade level of elementary school in Brazilian population. A total of 118 students participated of this study, aged between 6:0 and 6:11 (years:months), from 1st grade level, of both genders. The study was divided into three phases. In the first phase, all students were tested individually with Visual Attention Test software (TAVIS) composed of three tasks: selective attention, alternating attention and sustained attention. Because it was an initial study, all students were submitted to the Remediation Program with Attention and Working Memory (RAWM) in phase 2. The program consists of attention skills and phonological working memory skills (7 individual sessions, 40 minutes each). In phase 3, the students were submitted to the TAVIS. As results, from 118 students, 106 students concluded all 3 phases, which 34 students (32%) met the risk criteria for ADD after being submitted to the program. Of these, 34 students, 15 students (46.7%) responded to the intervention, while 19 students (59.3%) not responded. These students who not responded to the intervention program were sent to multidisciplinary care for monitoring and subsequent confirmation of the diagnosis of ADD. The findings of this study able us to conclude that RTI model can be used as an early identification tool for student at risk of attention in the early years literacy deficit.
