Cordeiro, Cynthia Azeredo;Moreira, Paula Rocha;Dutra, Walderez Ornelas;Campos, Wesley Ribeiro;Teixeira, Ant?nio Lúcio;Oréfice, Fernando;
Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2008, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492008000200032
Abstract: cytokines are molecules involved in intercellular communication in immune and inflammatory responses, playing an important role in uveitis. genetic polymorphisms responsible for the production of certain cytokines have been associated with the occurrence and the severity of uveitis. therefore, the present study has the purpose of describing these possible associations, pointing out the individual genetic background in the prognosis of uveitis.

Arquivos Brasileiros de Oftalmologia , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0004-27492010000600018
Abstract: toxoplasma gondii infection is an important cause of ocular disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent subjects. the pathogenesis of retinochoroidal lesion associated with this infection is not fully understood. in this review, the role of the immune system in the control of toxoplasma infection, especially in the eye, is discussed.
Cellular and genetic mechanisms involved in the generation of protective and pathogenic immune responses in human Chagas disease

Abstract: perhaps one of the most intriguing aspects of human chagas disease is the complex network of events that underlie the generation of protective versus pathogenic immune responses during the chronic phase of the disease. while most individuals do not develop patent disease, a large percentage may develop severe forms that eventually lead to death. although many efforts have been devoted to deciphering these mechanisms, there is still much to be learned before we can fully understand the pathogenesis of chagas disease. it is clear that the host's immune response is decisive in this process. while characteristics of the parasite influence the immune response, it is becoming evident that the host genetic background plays a fundamental role in the establishment of pathogenic versus protective responses. the involvement of three complex organisms, host, parasite and vector, is certainly one of the key aspects that calls for multidisciplinary approaches towards the understanding of chagas disease. we believe that now, one hundred years after the discovery of chagas disease, it is imperative to continue with highly interactive research in order to elucidate the immune response associated with disease evolution, which will be essential in designing prophylactic or therapeutic interventions.

Damasceno, Leonardo Silveira;Dutra, Walderez Ornelas;Melga?o, Eder Gon?alves;Souza, Paulo Eduardo Alencar de;Zenóbio, Elton Gon?alves;Horta, Martinho Campolina Rebello;
Revista Odonto Ciência , 2012, DOI: 10.1590/S1980-65232012000100014
Abstract: purpose: to report a case of cemental tear, a rare periodontal condition characterized by total or partial separation of the dental cementum, mainly addressing issues related to its diagnosis and treatment. case description: a 50 years-old man sought dental assistance complaining of pain located in the mandibular left second premolar that showed a 4 mm probing depth with the presence of a foreign body in the distal gingival sulcus. radiographic examination demonstrated a slight radiopaque fragment detached from the root. the fragment was removed without a periodontal flap. histopathological examination was performed and evidenced the presence of a cementum fragment with cementum lamellae, cementocytes, and adhered periodontal ligament fibers, confirming the diagnosis of cemental tear. conclusion: after a follow-up of 2 years, the nonsurgical periodontal therapy showed satisfactory clinical and radiographic outcome. therefore, this approach should be a suitable and predictable treatment modality for the cemental tear.
The changes on intimate partner violence against women in the health system in Portugal  [PDF]
Raquel Cardoso, José Ornelas
Health (Health) , 2013, DOI: 10.4236/health.2013.57A4010
Abstract:

In Portugal, over the last 20 years, we have seen great strides in addressing intimate partner violence against women by their male partners. Measuring and understanding progress, and achieving sustainable systems change is a major challenge and to achieve this aim we need to identify events, persons and settings that contribute for the critical factors that create long term transformations in the systems and the creation of new resources [1]. Since the healthcare system is one of the main actors of intervention with survivors, the goal of this project was to interview key stakeholders from the healthcare system in order to understand the main changes they perceive have happened over the past two decades. Based on interviews with key stakeholders, our study explores the evidences of the changes that occurred in the healthcare system, the intersections with other systems and their visions for the future.

American Journal of Plant Sciences (AJPS) , 2016, DOI: 10.4236/ajps.2016.717217
Abstract: Acmella oleracea is a plant species belonging to the Asteraceae family, native to the Amazon that has broad therapeutic and culinary use. Several secondary metabolites and your bioactive component spilanthol have been associated with its medicinal effects. This study aims to evaluate the leaf extract of A. oleracea for therapeutic purposes. When applied to both cell cultures HEp-2 neoplastic cells and L929 fibroblast cells, the increasing extract concentrations yielded a significant reduction in cell viability using ANOVA test with Significance of P 0.05 (*), Very Significant P 0.01 (***) and Extremely Significant P 0.001 (****), causing visible damage to cytoskeleton actin filaments. The cytotoxicity of the A. oleracea leaf extract may be associated with other components, including flavonoids. Thus, A. oleracea has a great cytotoxic activity on tumoral cells and can be considered for future antitumor therapy. However, because of its toxicity to non-tumoral cells, it is essential to evaluate the efficacy of each extract sub-fraction compound, alerting the population for the traditional use of the plant that can cause damage for the consumer.
