Abstract: the objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of using bulk milk with different somatic cell counts (scc) on the quality of minas frescal cheese. a randomized complete block design was used, with 3x5 factorial treatments, with three scc levels (low, 125,000 cells ml-1; intermediate, 437,000 cells ml-1; and high, 1,053,000 cells ml-1) and five storage durations. cheese was vacuum-packed in plastic bags and analyzed after 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 days of storage at 4oc. somatic cell counts did not affect dry matter, fat, ash content, ph, free fatty acid concentrations and sensory parameters of minas frescal cheese. however, scc in milk increased losses of protein in whey and decreased the cheese protein content. these changes did not affect the moisture-adjusted cheese yield and proteolysis during 30 days of storage. an interaction effect between scc and time of storage was observed for firmness and sensory grades of cheeses. results indicated that raw milk used to produce minas frescal cheese should not contain high scc, in order to avoid lower acceptance of the product after 30 days of storage.

Abstract: the cerrado is one of the main brazilian expanding regions for agriculture, but the fragility of its ecosystems limits the support capacity for agriculture activities, jeopardizing the preservation of its biodiversity. the objective of this study was to define local patterns of edaphic and vegetation characteristics, of a small watershed in rio pardo de minas municipality (minas gerais state, brazil), as the basis for the sustainable planning for local usage. for such, techniques of phytosociological survey and soils were applied and associated to multivariate statistical procedures, dendrogram and pca, in order to correlate the spatial distribution of groups of species with soil attributes. the results showed the classification of the environments into two groups, based on the nature of parent materials: arenitic-quartzitic and sandy-clayey and clayey sediments. the selection of variables using the multivariate analysis was able to discriminate the environments represented in the phytosociological plots. the patterns identified by the local farmers corresponded, in general, to the variations in the floristic and phytosociological parameters and edaphic attributes. the absolute density, basal area, shannon index and the granulometric fractions were the determinant parameters in the differentiation of the environments.

Abstract: objective: to determine serum cpk variation based on tsh e free t4 (ft4), and to assess serum cpk in pathological states of the thyroid (hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism), in relation to the euthyroidism. material and methods: we evaluated retrospectively 6,230 laboratory results of tsh and cpk from 2007 to 2011. from these, 3,369 had free t4 results. we evaluated the correlation between cpk and tsh and the pathological states of the thyroid. results: the correlation between tsh and cpk was positive (r = 0.065), while that between cpk and ft4 was negative (r = -0.091, p < 0.05). from the total of results analyzed, 586 (9.4%) were measures of hyperthyroidism, with a median (range) of cpk of 98 u/l (27 to 1,113), and 556 (8.9%) were of hypothyroidism, with cpk of 114 u/l (25-4,182). conclusion: a positive correlation was found between serum cpk and tsh, and a negative correlation between cpk and ft4. cpk was lower in the group with hyperthyroidism, and greater in that with hypothyroidism.
Beyond Technology, there Stands Magic
Lúcia Fernandes Lobato
Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Presen?a , 2013,
Abstract: This article shows evidence that despite the prominent influences of the technological revolution and the spectacular panoramas on the contemporary world, magic seems to stand beyond technology. To support this hypothesis, the author investigates the images on the cinema, pointing out that to discover magic in a film, for instance, it is necessary to recognize its subjective structures disguised in the objectivity of the screen. Finally, the author indicates that in the field of image production, dance films that are created out of a cross-disciplinary effort are another by product of the fusion between art and video, born out of technological advancements.
