Abstract: this study aimed to compare the sedative effects of morphine, meperidine and fentanyl, in combination with acepromazine (acp) and their effects on physiologic values in dogs. six healthy beagle dogs were randomly assigned to four treatments with 7-day washout intervals. in three treatments, acp (0.05mg kg-1) was administered and 20 minutes later, the dogs received administration of 0.5mg kg-1 of morphine (acpmor), 5mg kg-1 of meperidine (acpmep) or 5μg kg-1 of fentanyl (acpfen). in treatment acphdmor, 0.1mg kg-1 of acp was administered in combination with 0.5mg kg-1 of morphine. all drugs were administered intravenously. sedation scores were evaluated by a numeric descriptive scale (nds: 0-3) and a simple numeric scale (sns: 0-10). all variables were evaluated for 120 minutes. the administration of acp caused mild to moderate sedation. sedation was improved in all treatments after opioid administration, but significant differences were detected only in acpmor and acphdmor. more dogs presented intense sedation (nds=3.0) after administration of morphine (3/6 and 4/6 dogs in acpmor and acphdmor versus 1/6 in other treatments). duration of sedation was longer in acpmor and acphdmor. mild to moderate decreases in blood pressure, respiratory rate and temperature were observed in all treatments but decreased hr was observed only in acpmor and acphdmor. no significant differences were observed in the aforementioned variables when twice the dose of acp was used (treatment acphdmor). under the conditions of this study, administration of morphine, in combination with acp, results in greater and longer sedation than meperidine and fentanyl. increasing the dose of acp, in combination with morphine, does not improve the degree of sedation. all combinations used were considered to be safe for healthy dogs.

Abstract:

The best surgical technique for the treatment of mammary tumors in female dogs has been exhaustively debated among the scientific community. Despite biological knowledge of these tumors, some authors have suggested aggressive procedures, without any clinical advantage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of surgical procedure on the overall survival, disease-free interval and new lesion development interval in dogs with mammary tumors treated according to established prognostic factors. This prospective study included 143 intact female dogs that underwent surgery for mammary neoplasms and were followed up for about 738.5 days. Each animal represented a repetition. Each surgical technique represented a group: lumpectomy (P1), mammectomy (P2), regional mastectomy without cranial abdominal gland involvement (P3), regional mastectomy with cranial abdominal gland involvement (P4), and radical mastectomy (P5). Considering only the first surgical event, 84.6% of animals had more than one mammary tumor, and tumors were identified in two mammary chains in 52.5%. There was no difference in ipsilateral and contralateral tumor development when surgical techniques were compared. Only 33 dogs developed new lesions in remaining mammary tissue, without correlation with primary lesion. Surgical technique had no effect on the overall survival, disease-free

Abstract: root canal preparation has been considered one of the most important steps in root canal therapy, thus many techniques and instruments have been developed. the aim of this study was to evaluate the cleaning of the root canal through three different instrumentation techniques. thirty mandibular incisors were selected and submitted to lingual access cavities. afterwards, the canals were filled with india ink dye previously stored in carpules, which was inserted into the root canal by means of anesthetic syringe and anesthetic needles. after 48 hours, during which the dye was allowed to dry inside the root canal, the teeth were divided in three groups: g1- gt rotatory instrumentation; g2- manual instrumentation; g3- association of both. after instrumentation, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned. the cleaning process accomplished through the different instrumentation techniques was evidenced by dye removal at the cervical, middle and apical thirds of the root canal. the results of this study showed that were not statistically significant differences between these three instrumentation techniques for all three thirds of the root canal.

Abstract: seed predation on allagoptera arenaria (gomes) o'kuntze, 1891(arecaceae) palm by pachymerus nucleorum fabricius, 1972 was evaluated from september 2003 to september 2005 at the parque nacional da restinga de jurubatiba (pnrj), rio de janeiro, brazil. the biology and behaviour of p. nucleorum on a. arenaria and predation rates were described. fruits found beneath 50 palms were collected, monthly, for each one of the two sampled areas at pnrj (ridge forest and clusia sclthdl (clusiaceae) open shrubland formation). the evaluation of preyed fruits was done by counting exit holes of bruchinae in the field, the emergence of these insects in the laboratory and from fruits dissected. it was verified that pachymerus nucleorum oviposit on young developing infrutescences, different from literature records for other palm species, for which oviposition takes place on the fruit already on the ground. fruit predation by p. nucleorum was 29.3% at ridge forest and 20.6% at clusia open shrubland formation. the life cycle of p. nucleorum was long and with wide range of variation within samples, what suggests a possible diapause in some stage of life cycle.

Abstract: this study evaluates the relation between the use of tobacco, alcoholic beverages and illicit drugs and family protective factors. data from the national school health survey (pense) were analyzed in a sample of 60,973 students at the freshman year of high school, from public and private schools of brazilian state capitals. most adolescents lived with both their parents and about a third lived in households only with their mothers. half the parents or responsible parties are aware of what adolescents do in their free time. living with both parents is a protective factor for smoking, drinking, and drug use. family supervision is also important for the prevention of such behavior. sharing a meal with parents or responsible parties most days of the week and the fact that the parents know what the adolescents have done in their free time in the past 30 days are also protective factors. students that miss classes without telling their parents have higher chances of using tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. the family plays an essential role to prevent tobacco, alcohol, and drug use, and to promote health among teenagers.

Abstract: transition metal-catalyzed reactions including carbonylations, hydrovinylations and hydrogenations have been applied in the synthesis of a-(3-benzoylphenyl)propanoic acid (ketoprofen). 3-vinylbenzophenone was obtained from 3-bromobenzophenone by a pd-catalyzed heck coupling reaction. pd-catalyzed carbonylation of this olefin gave the isopropyl a-(3-benzoylphenyl) propionate in high yield (95%) and with high regioselectivity (>99.5%). ketoprofen was obtained in 90% yield by hydrolysis of the isopropyl ester. it was also obtained in two steps from 3-vinylbenzophenone by a ni-catalyzed hydrovinylation selectively affording 3-(3'-benzoylphenyl)-1-butene, followed by an oxidation. 3-ethynylbenzophenone was obtained from 3-bromobenzophenone by pd-catalyzed coupling reaction. by means of a pd-catalyzed carbonylation, this alkyne was converted regioselectively (97%) into methyl a-(3-benzoylphenyl) acrylate (93% yield). hydrolysis of the ester afforded the a-(3-benzoylphenyl)acrylic acid. asymmetric hydrogenation of this acid to give (s)-ketoprofen in 95% optical yield was achieved using a chiral ru-(s)-binap catalyst.
The role of Cerradomys Subflavus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) as seed predator and disperser of the palm Allagoptera arenaria

Abstract: small rodents are among the most abundant vertebrate seed predators in the tropics and palm fruits are a rich source of energy for them. allagoptera arenaria is a nurse plant species at restinga vegetation in southeastern brazil. forty-five adult a. arenaria were marked to estimate fruit crop size and seed predation by rodents. two trapping sessions were carried out to identify the rodent seed predators. in addition, a fruit removal experiment was conducted to investigate the role of rodents as seed dispersers. of the 7409 seeds collected, 24% were damaged by rodents. predation rates ranged from 0 to 64% per plant and the number and the proportion of damaged seeds increased significantly with crop size. in the removal experiments, 64% of the fruits were manipulated by rodents either in situ or away from palms: 16% were preyed in the same place, 29% were preyed following removal, 2% were dispersed and 12% were buried. seed fate could not be identified for 5% of the seeds. cerradomys subflavus was the only species caught and this fact together with its abundance in the study area and tooth marks left in the endocarps indicates that this rodent is the main seed predator of this palm. considering this, c. subflavus should play a key role in a. arenaria population dynamics through the reduction of the total number of seeds that may be recruited. however, seed burial in sites favorable for germination suggests that this rodent can act also as seed disperser of this palm.
