Abstract: the study of canine immunohematology is very important for veterinary transfusion medicine. the objective of this study was to determine the dea blood type frequencies in a purebred canine blood donor population from porto alegre, rs, brazil. one hundred clinically healthy purebred dogs were chosen, 20 dogs from each breed (great dane, rottweiler, golden retriever, german shepherd and argentine dogo). blood samples were taken in acd-a tubes and the msu hemagglutination tube test (mi, usa) was used to determine the blood types. the studied population presented general frequencies of 61% for dea 1.1, 22% for dea 1.2, 7% for dea 3, 100% for dea 4, 9% for dea 5 and 16% for dea 7. a significant association was found between breeds and certain combinations of blood types in this population. the results are in agreement with the literature since most part of the canine population studied was positive for dea 1.1, the most antigenic blood type in dogs. differences were found among the studied breeds and those should be considered when selecting a blood donor. the knowledge of blood types frequencies and their combinations in different canine populations, including different breeds, is important because it shows the particularities of each group, helps to keep a data bank of local frequencies and minimizes the risks of transfusion reactions.
O uso de pinturas de Dalí como ferramenta para avalia??o das altera??es na percep??o de forma e tamanho em pacientes esquizofrênicos

Abstract: a variety of studies involving schizophrenic patients have shown the occurrence of severe disabilities related to perception and cognition. most diagnostics rely on alterations that reveal faulty reasoning. our studies evaluate altered visual form and size perception in schizophrenic and major depression patients using 24 paintings by salvador dalí. we conducted two studies comparing experimental and control groups and found in both cases that schizophrenic patients first saw forms 1.5-3.0 times larger than controls. in another study with major depression patients, we show the absence of alterations in size perception during aggravated depressive symptoms. these effects on size perception can contribute as markers in the precocious diagnostic of the onset of positive symptoms in schizophrenia. we suggest that these paintings by dalí can be employed as a tool to assess the state of visual form and size perception in schizophrenic patients, and therefore prevent cognitive deterioration by introducing early treatment.

Brazilian Archives of Biology and Technology , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S1516-89132007000400016
Abstract: in this study, non-radioactive iodine was incorporated in two types of biodegradable hydroxyapatite-based porous matrices (ha and hacl) through impregnation process from sodium iodine aqueous solutions with varying concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 mol/l) . the results revealed that both systems presented a high capacity of incorporating iodine into their matrices. the quantity of incorporated iodine was measured through neutron activation analysis (naa). the porous ceramic matrices based on hydroxyapatite demonstrated a great potential for uses in low dose rate (ldr) brachytherapy.

Abstract: porous ceramic materials based on calcium phosphate compounds (cpc) have been studied aiming at different biomedical applications such as implants, drug delivery systems and radioactive sources for brachytherapy. two kinds of hydroxyapatite (hap) powders and their ceramic bodies were characterized by a combination of different techniques (xrf, bet method, sem, icp/aes and neutron activation analysis - naa) to evaluate their physico-chemical and microstructural characteristics in terms of chemical composition, segregated phases, microstructure, porosity, chemical and thermal stability, biodegradation and incorporation of substances in their structures. the results revealed that these systems presented potential for use as porous biodegradable radioactive sources able to be loaded with a wide range of radionuclides for cancer treatment by the brachytherapy technique.

Revista do Instituto de Medicina Tropical de S?o Paulo , 2011, DOI: 10.1590/S0036-46652011000200005
Abstract: background: cytomegalovirus (cmv) remains an important pathogen to immunocompromised patients even in the era of haart. the present study aimed at evaluating the influence of cmv viral load and its gb genotypes on aids patients' outcome. methods: blood samples of 101 aids patients were collected and tested for hiv load, cd4 - cell count and opportunistic pathogens, including cmv. semi-nested pcrs were run to detect cmv genome and in the positive samples, gb genotyping and cmv load were established using enzymatic restriction and real time pcr, respectively. all patients were clinically followed for four years. results: in thirty patients (31%) cmv was detected and all fatal cases (n = 5) occurred in this group of patients (p = 0.007), but only two patients had cmv disease (1.9%). however, viral load was not statistically associated with any analyzed parameter. the most frequently observed cmv genotype was gb2 (45.16%) followed by gb3 (35.48%). gb2 genotype was more frequently found in patients with cd4-cell counts under 200 cells/mm3 (p = 0.0017), and almost all fatal cases (80%) had gb2 genotype. conclusions: our study suggests that cmv and its polymorphisms in biologically relevant genes, such as the gb encoding orf, may still influence the prognosis and outcome of aids patients. the gb2 genotype was associated to patient's bad outcome.

Online Brazilian Journal of Nursing , 2009,
Abstract: Introduction: Some mothers do not comply with breastfeeding due to unawareness of the practice. Aims: To characterize the demographic and obstetrical profile of postpartum women and to verify the influence of their instruction level and the number of prenatal consultations on breastfeeding knowledge. Design: Descriptive and quantitative study. Method: Individual interviews were carried out with 150 postpartum women at a public maternity rooming-in. The data were processed in the SPSS, version 13.0. Results: Most women were between 18 and 35 years old, less than eight schooling years; 91 (60.7%) were multiparae and 87 (58%) had not breastfed previously. Increased knowledge was verified on breastfeeding protection against ovarian and breast cancer (n=66; 89.2%), child development and promotion of mother and baby bonds (n=74; the 100%) and protection against child infections (n=73; 98.6%) among postpartum women with eight schooling years. The largest number of prenatal consultations positively influenced the understanding of maternal milk as an optimum food for children (n=109; 100%), the baby's bottle use to worsen breast suckling (n=88; 80.7%), the introduction of other foods affecting the child health (n=93; 85.3%) and painless breastfeeding of mothers who follow correct handling (n=74; 67.9%). Conclusion: The study reveals that factors such as instruction and number of prenatal consultations influence the knowledge level on breastfeeding, therefore reinforces the need for prenatal care promotion and educative approaches toward breastfeeding. Relevance for the clinical practice: This study brings to attention factors related to mother’s knowledge about breastfeeding. Thus, women awareness must be raised toward exclusive breastfeeding as the best health practice to the mother-baby binomial.
Hardness and stress of amorphous carbon films deposited by glow discharge and ion beam assisting deposition
Marques, F. C.;Lacerda, R. G.;
Brazilian Journal of Physics , 2000, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-97332000000300008
Abstract: the hardness and stress of amorphous carbon films prepared by glow discharge and by ion beam assisting deposition are investigated. relatively hard and almost stress free amorphous carbon films were deposited by the glow discharge technique. on the other hand, by using the ion beam assisting deposition, hard films were also obtained with a stress of the same order of those found in tetrahedral amorphous carbon films. a structural analysis indicates that all films are composed of a sp2-rich network. these results contradict the currently accepted concept that both stress and hardness are only related to the concentration of sp3 sites. furthermore, the same results also indicate that the sp2 sites may also contribute to the hardness of the films.
