Química Nova , 2006, DOI: 10.1590/S0100-40422006000300016
Abstract: the fractionation of the antioxidant ethyl acetate extract obtained from the dried leaves of chrysophyllum marginatum afforded six substances identified as: a-amirin, gallic acid, myricitrin, quercitrin, (-)-epigallocatechin and (-)-epigallocatechin-3-o-gallate. this study contributes to the knowledge of the secondary metabolites produced by one more species of the brazilian flora, until now not investigated. moreover, this study allowed the identification of three substances with antioxidant activity previously detected in this species.

Abstract: The present study investigates the chemical composition of the African plant Parkia biglobosa (Fabaceae) roots and barks by Liquid Chromatography - Electrospray Ionization and Direct Injection Tandem Mass Spectrometry analysis. Mass spectral data indicated that B-type oligomers are present, namely procyanidins and prodelphinidins, with their gallate and glucuronide derivatives, some of them in different isomeric forms. The analysis evidenced the presence of up to 40 proanthocyanidins, some of which are reported for the first time. In this study, the antiradical activity of extracts of roots and barks from Parkia biglobosa was evaluated using DPPH method and they showed satisfactory activities.

Silva, Viviane C. da;Bolzani, Vanderlan da S.;Young, Maria C. M.;Lopes, Márcia N.;
Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-50532007000700017
Abstract: a new antifungal phenolic glycoside, 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl-1-o-b-d-(5-o-syringoyl)apiofuranosyl-(1?6)-b-d-glucopyranoside (1), together with four known iridoids, geniposidic acid (2), geniposide (3), 6a-hydroxygeniposide (4) and 6b-hydroxygeniposide (5); two lignans, (+)-lyoniresinol-3a-o-b-d-glucopyranoside (6), (-)-lyoniresinol-3a-o-b-d-glucopyranoside (7); and two phenolic acids, chlorogenic (8) and salicylic acids (9) and d-manitol (10), were isolated from the ethanolic extract of the stems of alibertia sessilis. structures of 1 and of the known compounds were determined by spectroscopic analysis. all compounds isolated were evaluated for their antifungal activities against two phytopathogenic fungi strains cladosporium cladosporioides and c. sphaerospermum by direct bioautography.

Abstract: the observations on several morphological characteristics made on plants derived from treatments of seed with colchicine in the egg-plant (solatium melongena l.) led to separation of a reasonable number of possible polyploids. chromosome number determined in p.m.c. indicated the existence of tetraploid plants, chimeric plants at level 24-48 and at level 48-96 beside the diploid normal ones. in a certain number of plants representing the different treatments, it was found an almost perfect association between tetraploidy and chimeric condition of the plants at one side and irregular size of the pollen at the other side; such an association was not found when the amount of empty pollen was analysed. the tetraploid fruits produced low number of seeds which were not uniform in size but were larger and in general heavier than the diploid ones.

Investigación y Educación en Enfermería , 2007,
Abstract: objective: to measure the probability of occurrence of nurse-made diagnoses, together with related factors and associated problems. methodology: a cross study was carried out in a public hospital at the municipality of fortaleza, ceará, brazil. two hundred and seventy diagnostic evaluations were made by nurses on children suffering from congenital heart diseases. for statistical analyses (probability rate) diagnoses with frequencies over 50%, related factors with frequencies above the 75 percentile, and the four most common associated problems were selected. statistical significance was calculated with confidence intervals of 95%. results: twenty-two nurse-made diagnoses, 34 related factors, and 23 different associated problems were identified. seventeen significant odds ratio were found among the diagnoses, 38 between them and the related factors, and 13 between the diagnoses and the associated problems. discussion: the nurse-made diagnoses may be influenced by the alterations of blood flow and of oxygen saturation that are characteristic of patients with congenital heart diseases. conclusion: the joint occurrence of diagnoses increases the probability of developing multiple human responses.

Abstract: in brazil , it is estimated that from 20 to 30 thousand children carriers of congenital heart diseases are born every year. that's why, it was of interest to measure the vital signs of the brazilian children with congenital heart diseases to confirm the modification of their values due to this affection. the universe of study was composed of children with a medical diagnosis of congenital heart disease seen in a hospital of fortaleza-ceará municipality, brazil . the sample was made up of 45 children that fulfilled the inclusion criteria and that were admitted during the data collection period in 2005. six diagnostic evaluations were made with 48-hour intervals among them during 15 days, with 270 observations in all. the sample was characterized according to sex, age, height, and birth weight. systolic and diastolic blood pressures were measured as well as heart and respiratory rate, pulse, and temperature. the results were expressed in measures of central tendency, dispersion, and percentiles. hemodynamic alterations caused by congenital heart diseases gave rise to the elevation of blood pressure in 95.5 % of the children. a similar situation occurred with the respiratory and cardiac rates, but in a lower percentage. body temperature rises only when it was associated with infections, and it was controlled by means of antipyretics. it was proved that in nursing care, the measurement of the vital signs is very important, since it allows an integral evaluation of the hemodynamic alterations that may affect the children with congenital heart diseases.

Abstract: a didactic-instructive material was constructed to be used in school children during the cardiovascular health education practices. the descriptive study was based on the construction and validation of an educative technology on the "arterial hypertension" topic. the work was divided into 5 stages. stage 1 consisted in the development of and educative booklet on the selected topic. stage 2 was characterized by the application of the booklet to school children. stage 3 was the revision of the answers given to the questions included in the booklet. the preliminary results allowed to remodel the presentation of the educative material contained in the booklet that turned into a more illustrative and colorful book. stage 4 was the analysis of the educative book by specialists in children's books and education. stage 5 was the utilization of the book among 24 school children from other school. after the accomplishment of the 5 stages, it was concluded that the proposed educative resource was an efficient tool in the development of cardiovascular health education activities in children during the studied period.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2007, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692007000200016
Abstract: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between anthropometric measures of children with congenital heart disease with percentiles that represent their growth indicators. anthropometric evaluations of 135 hospitalized children with congenital heart disease were performed in a hospital specialized in cardiac diseases in fortaleza, ce, brazil. for the growth evaluation, percentiles of height by age, weight by height and weight by age were calculated. children's average age was 4.74 months (+ 3.78) and 66.7% of the children were male. the medians of the three percentiles presented values below percentile 10, indicating a high proportion of values considered of risk. the subscapular thickness presented positive correlation with the three percentiles. the values of percentiles studied indicated growth delay.

Revista Latino-Americana de Enfermagem , 2004, DOI: 10.1590/S0104-11692004000100013
Abstract: in this article, we propose a mathematical analysis model for the generation of a proportional value of defining characteristics in nursing diagnoses. the study results are based on the logical-mathematical development of software specifically built for the generation of diagnosis hypotheses. the final calculation creates the sum of all defining characteristics found in each diagnosis, comparing it with the value of the v variable of the diagnosis, according to a mathematical rule that was set. it is concluded that the software needs to go through clinical validation in order to evaluate the pertinence of the rule proposed here.
