O progresso a vapor: navega??o e desenvolvimento na Amaz?nia do século XIX
Gregório, Vitor Marcos;
Nova Economia , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-63512009000100008
Abstract: the establishment of regular steamboat line in the amazon region was neither a quick nor a simple decision. it was the result of a long decision-making process that was created along with the start of the brazilian parliamentary life, in 1826. during its evolution, it underwent numerous advances and setbacks before the opening of the amazon river to all friendly countries definitively began to attract foreign capital for the activity, starting in 1867. this article examines this crucial process for the formation of the brazilian national state and the final incorporation of the amazon into the empire, recognizing that a fact of such importance could never be resolved in a few months only with the goodwill of some paraenses to remain united to the court of rio de janeiro.
Curvature Motion in a Minkowski Plane
Vitor Balestro,Marcos Craizer,Ralph C. Teixeira
Mathematics , 2014,
Abstract: In this paper we study the curvature flow of a curve in a plane endowed with a minkowskian norm whose unit ball is smooth. We show that many of the properties known in the euclidean case can be extended (with due adaptations) to this new situation. In particular, we show that simple, closed, strictly convex, smooth curves remain so until the area enclosed by them vanishes. Moreover, their isoperimetric ratios converge to the minimum possible value, only attained by the minkowskian circle - so these curves converge to a minkowskian "circular point" as the enclosed area approaches zero.

Case Reports in Clinical Medicine (CRCM) , 2019, DOI: 10.4236/crcm.2019.83006
Abstract: Cholangiocarcinomas are primary malignant tumors of the liver that arises from the epithelium lining the small intra and extrahepatic bile ducts, and has numerous histologic types and growth patterns. At computed tomography (CT) and magnetic ressonance (MR), it has various appearences which motivated the present study; we present a case within an atypical presentation. The objective is to show the variety of differential diagnoses before an atypical aspect and the importance of the imaging methods for the diagnosis. Cholangiocarcinoma is still an uncommon neoplasm, and CT and MR are crucial for accurate diagnosis and for differentiation from other hepatic tumorous and nontumorous lesions.

Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922005000600006
Abstract: several studies have shown a benefic effect of the power exercise on the reduction in the post-exercise blood pressure (bp), but there are insufficient researches involving hypertensive individuals. thus, the present study has as main purpose to compare the bp responses on medicated hypertensive individuals after two sessions of power exercise with different training volumes. for this, it was studied 20 individuals of both genders (61 ± 12 years) with their hypertension controlled through medication, and who participated in an exercise program, but with no experience in power training. the study was performed in three non-consecutive days. first, it was determined ten maximal repetition load in each exercise of the sequence (straight supine, horizontal leg-press, stand-up-rowing, and triceps curl). in the remaining days, the same exercises were performed in one (ser1) or three (ser3) series. the bp measurement was performed through the auscultatory method in the pre-exercise period, immediately after each session, and within 60 minutes after ending the exercises. the repeated anova measurements has identified in both sessions that the systolic (sbp), and diastolic blood pressure (dbp) values measured right after ending the exercises were higher (p < 0.05) than in the pre-exercise. the 60 minutes follow-up after the ser1 showed a reduction in the sbp only in the 40th minute, while it was found no reduction in the dbp. after the ser3, it was noted a fall in the sbp levels that lasted for the whole monitoring period. as to the dbp, it was found reductions in the 30th and 50th post-exercise minute. it can be concluded that a power training session can promote reductions in the levels of the sbp on medicated hypertensive individuals, and it seems to be necessary a higher training volume for that effect to occur.

Revista Brasileira de Medicina do Esporte , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S1517-86922005000200009
Abstract: the objective of this study was to verify the reliability between self-reported and measured weight, height and body mass index values, as well as the influence of the physical activity history on 328 individuals, 200 women (39 ± 11 years) and 128 men (35 ± 10 years) who search for the supervised practice of exercises. all individuals underwent functional evaluation that recorded self-reported and measured weight and height values. the individuals were also classified as active (those who exercised three times a week or more), a low active (those who exercised from one to two times a week), and inactive (those who did not exercise), according to the physical activity history in the last three months previously to the evaluation. the data obtained through the calculation of the intraclass correlation coefficient showed high reliability between variables reported in men (icc > 0.94) and women (icc > 0.96). the one-way analysis of variance anova did not suggest any association, either isolated or combined, between the physical activities review and regularity in the error magnitude in reports from men (p > 0.29) and women (p > 0.07). according to these findings, the authors encourage weight and height report use in studies with large sampling size, regardless the physical activity level.
Vigor de sementes de milho associado à mato-competi??o
Dias, Marcos Altomani Neves;Mondo, Vitor Henrique Vaz;Cicero, Silvio Moure;
Revista Brasileira de Sementes , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0101-31222010000200011
Abstract: seed vigor is directly related to rapid and uniform seedling emergence and to crop initial development, factor which should have significant effects on the ability of plants to compete for the uptake of resources such as water, light and soil nutrients. it was investigated the effects of maize seed vigor on crop initial growth, yield and weed competition. the experiment was conducted in an experimental area at the university of sao paulo, piracicaba, sp, brazil during the 2007/2008 growing season and used four lots of maize seed hybrid dow8480, previously characterized with different vigor levels, grown on plots with and without weed control to give a total of eight treatments. field analysis were made at the 2, 4, 6 and 8 leaves development stages when plants were evaluated by height, stem diameter and leaf area index. the solar radiation incident on intercrop lines was also measured at the 4 leaf development stage. weed samples were collected during the maize-tasseling stage and evaluated by dry mass accumulation and maize yield was evaluated at harvest. the results showed that seed vigor is directly related to initial crop growth and that this affects maize plant competitive ability with regard to weeds with inferior growth rates. furthermore, seed vigor has direct effects on maize yield during maximized competition for the uptake of resources.
LEISHMANIOSES: “ESTADO DA ARTE”
Ivan de Oliveira PEREIRA,Luis Vitor Silva SACRAMENTO,Marcos José MARQUES
Revista da Universidade Vale do Rio Verde , 2011,
Abstract: There is no vaccine available against leishmaniasis. Drug resistance, variable efficacy, toxicity, parenteral administration, and requirement for long courses of administration are the main drawbacks of current leishmanicidal drugs. Infections by protozoans of the genus Leishmania are the major worldwide health problem, withhigh endemicity in developing countries. The drugs of choice for the treatment of leishmaniasis are the pentavalent antimonials, which exert renal and cardiac toxicity, thus, there is a strong need for safer and more effective treatments against leishmaniasis.

Many studies have been conducted about death; however, there are no instruments available in Brazil to evaluate this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to perform the cross-cultural adaptation of the Multidimensional Orientation Toward Dying and Death Inventory (MODDI-F), originally designed in Germany and translated into English, constituted by 47 items divided in eight domains. This scale evaluates people's reactions and attitudes in relation to fear of death and dying. To produce the first version, it was translated into Portuguese, separately, by three experts in English. The first version was submitted to five judges for the "Semantic and Idiomatic Equivalences Evaluation", which produced the second version. The second version was submitted to the second group of five judges for a conceptual and cultural evaluation (third version). Then the Focal Group was developed, in which the instrument, which was called IMMOR in Portuguese, was analyzed by community representatives, of both sexes, different ages and levels of schooling, establishing the fourth version, which was submitted to a back-translation and sent to the author. After the implementation of
