Revista da Sociedade Brasileira de Medicina Tropical , 1997,
Abstract: With the emergence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), Toxoplasma gondii has arisen as an important opportunist pathogenic agent, especcially in the central nervous system, being the most common cause of intracerebral lesions. The incidence of Toxoplasma gondii in HIV-infected patients depends principally on the existence of latent Toxoplasma parasitosis in the population affected. Through the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), IgG and IgM anti-Toxoplasma antibodies were found in 92 patients of which 46 (50.0%) were IgG seropositive, and only one case (1.0%) had IgM antibodies.Of the 92 patients: 53 were HIV seropositives and 39 had AIDS. The detection and monitoring of anti-Toxoplasma antibodies in HIV patients is essential, since in this group there is a high percentage risk of developing cerebral toxoplasmosis, which is the second cause of death in this type of patients.
Los sistemas de almacenamiento inka de Tinyaq, Ayacucho, Perú

Bulletin de l'Institut Francais d'études Andines , 2000,
Abstract: LES ENTREP TS INKA à TINYAQ, AYACUCHO, PéROU. SYSTEMS OF INKA STORAGE AT TINYAQ, AYACUCHO, PERU. The Inka occupation of the Ayacucho Valley is a subject that has received little attention by archaeologists. Although it is evident that this valley was incorporated by the Inka, little is known regarding the role of the valley within the empire. Various studies carried out in the valley have resulted only in the location of very few Inka settlements. This information has been used by some to argue that the Ayacucho Valley played no role in the political scheme of the empire. The recent location of the Inka storehouses at Tinyaq, however, suggests that this valley was not abandoned as many have claimed. In this essay, it is our aim to evaluate the significance of the Inka structures of Tinyaq. On the basis of this data, we argue that this valley was part of the productive system of Tawantinsuyo.

Creative Education (CE) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/ce.2014.56051
Abstract:

This study reports five years of a school readiness intervention called “HABLA” (Home Based Activities Building Language Acquisition), designed to increase and enrich speech and literacy activities in the homes of economically and educationally disadvantaged Latino families with children between the age of 2 and 4. A team of trained home visitors provided two years of a 23-week program of visitation in which they met with parent(s) and child twice weekly. Both years presented a Spanish language adaptation of the parent-child home program model; home visitors provide intensive modeling and coaching of non-directive Spanish language use, conversation, and literacy activities. Administration of the PLS-3 in Spanish at the onset and culmination of each year of the program indicates significant increases in receptive and expressive language for each year of visitation (7.8 standard points for the first year, 4.4 for the second) with effect-size r ranging from .24 to 42. Participants had significantly improved their levels of oral Spanish skill and scored much higher than a comparison group of non-treated. A subset of graduates of the two-year program was tested as kindergarteners; they showed a continued advantage over a comparison group of 18 peers who had not received the intervention. For the graduates, both their Spanish PLS-3 scores and English PLS-4 scores were significantly higher, and their parents reported a continued effort to provide literacy experiences at home. The HABLA participants also showed a clear advantage for an English language test of phonological awareness, one of the strongest predictors of school success.

Abstract: the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of coffee intake with and without caffeine on feeding behavior in rats. sixteen rats was exposed to 2g, 3g, 4g and 5g of coffee with caffeine and without caffeine diluted in 200ml of water. subjects were assigned to 4 groups conformed by 2 females and 2 males each one. groups 1 and 2 were exposed to coffee with caffeine and groups 3 and 4 to coffee without caffeine. exposed to coffee for groups 1 and 3 was of ascending form (2 g, 3 g, 4 g, and 5 g) and for groups 2 and 4 of descendent form (5 g, 4 g, 3 g and 2 g). the experiment was divided in 9 phases. phases 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 lasted of 10 days, in each one were provided 200ml of water and 50g food. phases 2, 4, 6 and 8 lasted of 5 days; in each one provided the concentrations of coffee and 50g food. the results showed that the low concentrations of coffee registered a greater consumption in comparison with the high concentrations in both conditions (ascending and descendent). on the other hand, coffee without caffeine was more consumed than coffee with caffeine

Revista mexicana de análisis de la conducta , 2010,
Abstract: the overcrowding and isolation conditions are often experienced by people living in big cities around the world, the literature suggest that under certain conditions it could promote stress-induced anxiety and obesity. the goal of this study was to investigate the effects of post-weaning overcrowding or isolation over the food intake, growth and anxiety in rats. 30 male rats were housed from weaning (21 days old) till 60 days old on three different conditions: 1) optimal recommended for lab rodents with at least 168 cm2 per rat (control group), 2) with no more than 50.4 cm2 per rat (overcrowding group) and 3) individual housed (isolation group). were recorded daily food intake, weight gain and increased size. on days 58, 59 and 60 was assessed the anxiety level in elevated plus-maze followed by recorded of food intake. our results shown anxiety in adulthood and food intake was altered in the beginning of dark cycle.

Abstract: We describe Veech groups of flat surfaces arising from irrational angled polygonal billiards or irreducible stable abelian differentials. For irrational polygonal billiards, we prove that these groups are non-discrete subgroups of SO(2,R) and we calculate their rank.
Characterization of Genotypic Mutations and Antiretroviral Resistance among Viremic HIV-Infected Patients in a High HIV Prevalence Area: Treatment Challenge and Transmission Risk  [PDF]

Abstract: There have been few reports evaluating the prevalence of genotypic mutations and antiretroviral resistance among chronic HIV-infected Veterans within the United States. This retrospective cross-sectional study characterizes the rates and changes in HIV genotypic mutations and antiretroviral resistance among viremic patients from 2001 to 2006 at the VA Medical Center located in Washington, DC. The District of Columbia is the metropolitan area with the highest HIV prevalence within the United States. De-identified, linked HIV RNA, genotypic reverse transcriptase (RT) and protease (Pr) mutations and antiretroviral resistance results were assessed for changes during the 6-year period. Aggregated clinic and antiretroviral utilization, and HIV acquisition risk data were evaluated for patients in care during this time. Among 990 viremic samples, the rate of any detected RT or Pr mutation fell from 100% in 2001 to 95% in 2006. This was primarily attributable to the 15% - 20% decrease seen for RT gene mutations against nucleoside/nucleotide class and non-nucleoside class during this period. Resistance to didanosine, stavudine, zidovudine, nevirapine and efavirenz decreased, and tenofovir resistance increased. Despite stable rates of Pr gene mutations, atazanavir resistance increased by 22% from 2003 to 2006. Some but not all changes in genotypic mutations and resistance patterns reflected our patients’ antiretroviral drug utilization. As sexual contacts (77%) and injection drug use (22%) were the leading acquisition risks disclosed by our HIV-infected patients, the high prevalence and changing patterns of HIV genotypic mutations and drug resistance among these patients have had pivotal impacts not only on HIV treatment but potential transmission into our community.
