Abstract: Aggressive angiomyxoma was first described in 1983 by Steeper and Rosai, and fewer than 150 cases have been reported in the world medical literature. It is a soft-tissue tumour of the pelvis and perineum. The recurrence rate is high, and often extensive resections are performed with considerable morbidity. These tumours are benign, locally infiltrative mesenchymal neoplasms with a predilection for the female pelvis and perineum and they usually tend to recur. Furthermore, these tumours often reach too large dimensions before becoming clinically symptomatic; their incidence is higher in women of the reproductive age group; however a few cases of its occurrence outside the pelvis have also been reported. In this study, we reported three cases with aggressive pelvic angiomyxoma treated with surgical methods and used an approach that described by Kraske in order to get access to lower rectal cancers. Accurate preoperative diagnosis should alert the surgeon to the need for wide excision, which is essential for prevention of local recurrence.

Subjective response to antipsychotic treatment and compliance in schizophrenia. A naturalistic study comparing olanzapine, risperidone and haloperidol (EFESO Study)

BMC Psychiatry , 2001, DOI: 10.1186/1471-244x-1-7
Abstract: Outpatients with schizophrenia entered this prospective, naturalistic study when they received a new prescription for an antipsychotic drug. Treatment assignment was based on purely clinical criteria, as the study did not include any experimental intervention. Patients treated with olanzapine, risperidone or haloperidol were included in the analysis. Subjective response was measured using the 10-item version of the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI-10), and treatment compliance was measured using a physician-rated 4 point categorical scale.A total of 2128 patients initiated treatment (as monotherapy) with olanzapine, 417 with risperidone, and 112 with haloperidol. Olanzapine-treated patients had significantly higher DAI-10 scores and significantly better treatment compliance compared to both risperidone- and haloperidol-treated patients. Risperidone-treated patients had a significantly higher DAI-10 score compared to haloperidol-treated patients.Subjective response and compliance were superior in olanzapine-treated patients, compared to patients treated with risperidone and haloperidol, in routine clinical practice. Differences in subjective response were explained largely, but not completely, by differences in incidence of EPS.Some patients with schizophrenia report experiencing subjective sensations of change after only a few doses of neuroleptic drugs. They often complain vaguely of not feeling like themselves or somehow being limited in terms of activity. It is not uncommon to hear expressions like 'apathetic', 'mummified', ... [1] or to hear patients report that they are 'incapable of thinking straight' or feel 'like zombies' [2].These complaints have been related to antipsycotic therapy, although not always specifically. The phenomenon has received various names including pharmacogenic depression [3], behavioural toxicity [4], subjective dysphoric response [5,1], psychophysiological sensitivity [6,7], neuroleptic dysphoria' [8], neuroleptic anhedonia [9], and neuro

Abstract: Five experiments were carried outin the laboratory to obtain callus and plantlets from young petals of carnation(Dianthus caryophyilus) using differentconcentrations of BAP, NAA, 2,40 and light/dark treatments. The best results wereobtained with Murashige and Skoog madium containing 0,5 ppm of BAP, 2 ppm of NAA and O,1 ppm of 2,4D on light conditions. It was determinated that the whole petal asexplant was better to obtain plantlets regenerated. For the selection pressure it wasused autoclaved toxic material of F. oxysporum f. sp. dianthi (between O and 40%)mixad with the plantlets and callus regenerated medium. From this experiment it was obtained possible tolerants somaclonal variants of carnation to 10% level of toxics materials.

Abstract: Background A salivary proteome-transcriptome project on the hard tick Ixodes scapularis revealed that Kunitz peptides are the most abundant salivary proteins. Ticks use Kunitz peptides (among other salivary proteins) to combat host defense mechanisms and to obtain a blood meal. Most of these Kunitz peptides, however, remain functionally uncharacterized, thus limiting our knowledge about their biochemical interactions. Results We discovered an unusual cysteine motif in a Kunitz peptide. This peptide inhibits several serine proteases with high affinity and was named tryptogalinin due to its high affinity for β-tryptase. Compared with other functionally described peptides from the Acari subclass, we showed that tryptogalinin is phylogenetically related to a Kunitz peptide from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus, also reported to have a high affinity for β-tryptase. Using homology-based modeling (and other protein prediction programs) we were able to model and explain the multifaceted function of tryptogalinin. The N-terminus of the modeled tryptogalinin is detached from the rest of the peptide and exhibits intrinsic disorder allowing an increased flexibility for its high affinity with its inhibiting partners (i.e., serine proteases). Conclusions By incorporating experimental and computational methods our data not only describes the function of a Kunitz peptide from Ixodes scapularis, but also allows us to hypothesize about the molecular basis of this function at the atomic level.
