Polymorphism of Lithuanian Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) with regard to monoterpene composition in needles

Abstract: Interspecific interactions between Scots pine and other organisms depend much on tree chemistry, and monoterpenes play an important role in the interactions. Monoterpenes present in pine needles perform a defensive function against phytophagous animals (insects, molluscs, moose, deer) and the function of kairomones and synomones. A pilot study on the composition of monoterpenes in needles of 7-10-year old trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) from the Lithuanian population (within a relatively small area) was carried out using gas chromatography. The composition of 6 monoterpenes (α-pinene, camphene, β-pinene, myrcene, 3-carene and limonene) in needles was analysed, and the polymorphism of Scots pine was evaluated. With regard to monoterpene composition in needles, Scots pine were found to be polymorphic. The predominant monoterpenes were α-pinene and 3-carene. Their relative contents (of all the monoterpenes studied) varied from 27 to 79% and from 0 to 66%, respectively. Relative contents of α-pinene, 3-carene and β-pinene were found to be the most and those of myrcene and camphene the least variable. The relative content of limonene in needle extracts varied moderately. The variation in the relative content of 3-carene was found to be the greatest: in needles of some plants 3-carene was abundant (about 65.8% of the total amount of all the monoterpenes analysed), while in those of other plants this monoterpene was totally absent (or its content was below the level of chromatographic detection). The relative monoterpene composition in needles of Scots pine can be used for plant selection as well as for chemotype identification within the population.

Abstract: Optic stimulus used for human oculomotor system or eye-hand coordination researches is often represented on a computer screen. They must be synchronised with the eye tracker to achieve the accurate results of the conducted experiments. Relation between stimulus presence and eye image capturing times can be defined only with reference to knowledge of all system delays. The suggested research evaluates our eye tracking system delay and propose a practical method for measuring and evaluating delays to the computer graphic subsystem. Experimental research shows that LC Technologies eye tracker reports gaze angle with 28 ms lag and the average stimulus lag of the computer graphic subsystem is 9,5 ms.Article in Lithuanian
Identification of Capacitive MEMS Accelerometer Structure Parameters for Human Body Dynamics Measurements

Abstract: Due to their small size, low weight, low cost and low energy consumption, MEMS accelerometers have achieved great commercial success in recent decades. The aim of this research work is to identify a MEMS accelerometer structure for human body dynamics measurements. Photogrammetry was used in order to measure possible maximum accelerations of human body parts and the bandwidth of the digital acceleration signal. As the primary structure the capacitive accelerometer configuration is chosen in such a way that sensing part measures on all three axes as it is 3D accelerometer and sensitivity on each axis is equal. Hill climbing optimization was used to find the structure parameters. Proof-mass displacements were simulated for all the acceleration range that was given by the optimization problem constraints. The final model was constructed in Comsol Multiphysics. Eigenfrequencies were calculated and model’s response was found, when vibration stand displacement data was fed into the model as the base excitation law. Model output comparison with experimental data was conducted for all excitation frequencies used during the experiments.
Resistive Sensor for High Power Microwave Pulse Measurement of Te01 Mode in Circular Waveguide

Abstract: A resistive sensor (RS) devoted for high power microwave pulse measurement in cylindrical waveguide is considered. The modeling results of the interaction of the TE01 (H01) wave with a semiconductor plate with contacts on sidewalls of the plate placed on a wall of the circular waveguide are presented. A finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was employed for the calculation of the electromagnetic field components, reflection coefficient from the semiconductor obstacle, and the average electric field in it. The features of the resonances have been used to engineer the frequency response of the RS. It has been found that such electrophysical parameters of the plate can serve as the prototype of the sensing element (SE) for the circular waveguide RS with flat frequency response.

The cellular immune response elicited by Mycobacterium bovis Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has been carefully investigated, but the humoral immune response has been partially neglected. BALB/c mice were immunized with BCG strain used to immunize humans. Anti-BCG antibodies, as assayed by ELISA, began to appear in the sera after the third week of immunization and plateaued three weeks after the 8th immunization. The total immunoglobulins (Igs) were purified by caprylic acid method from pooled serum collected after the 8th immunization. Anti-BCG antigen antibodies were detected in the total Igs preparation as well as in IgG, IgM, IgA, IgG1, IgG2a, and IgG2b, but not in the IgG3. Distinct BCG proteins were recognized the IgGs in Western blot analysis. Opsonization of BCG bacilli by the purified Igs potentiated internalization of the bacteria by murine Raw 264.7 macrophages. The intracellular BCG elimination coincided with the induction of NO production, which was more pronounced in cells infected with opsonized BCG compared to those infected with the non-opsonized bacteria. Coincidently, the production of NO was also higher in macrophages infected with opsonized BCG (maximal NO production at 48 h of incubation). The present article reports the application of zinc ethyl silicate paint and the use of internal and external paint schemes on carbon steel spheres for the storage of liquefied petroleum gas. The new paint scheme eliminates the steps of blasting in the field and minimizes the collection of waste generated and the environmental impact, reducing the service time onsite and therefore providing a productivity gain and better health and cleanliness at work. The results were obtained through test runs and qualified in bodies-of-proof made with the same characteristics as the sphere, that is, using the same material (carbon steel), thickness, and mechanical formation and subject to the same conditions of design and implementation process. The paint scheme was approved, qualified, and committed to the supplier’s warranty with the paint manufacturer and assembler of the storage spheres for liquefied petroleum gas.

Abstract: Ca2Fe2O5 powder sample, were prepared to investigate the origin of the weak ferromagnetic component reported in literature for calcium ferrite single crystals. In this work, the calcination method was used to produce nanocrystalline powders of Ca2Fe2O5. XRD measurement has shown the presence of Fe3O4 magnetite and CaO as impurity phases. The ferrimagnetic phase deeply influences the magnetic behavior with features very similar to those reported in literature for Ca2Fe2O5, both powders and single crystals. Our results support the hypothesis that the weak ferromagnetic component observed in Ca2Fe2O5 can be also due to the presence of magnetite impurity traces in the samples. The powders were submitted to calcination processes at 500℃ for 2 hours and 950℃ for 16 hours. The sintered sample was submitted at 1050℃ for 6 hours and characterized by X-Ray Powder diffraction (XRD), dielectric measurements, Magnetization and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis.

Raised myeloperoxidase (MPO) serum levels are associated with endothelial dysfunction and cigarette smoking is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Since myocardial infarction is associated with leukocytosis and smokers present increased levels of neutrophils, here we hypothesized that the levels of serum MPO in smokers could be also raised. We carried out a study on sixty eight adult healthy volunteers. The control group consisted of thirty four non-smokers and the test group was thirty four heavy smokers. The hemogram, interleukin-8 (IL-8) and MPO serum levels were measured. Neutrophil, monocyte and lymphocyte counts were higher (p < 0.05) and the serum levels of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and MPO were fourfold higher in smokers than in non-smokers (n = 34, p < 0.05). This result correlated perfectly with the increased neutrophil count and IL-8 serum level that characterize smoking subjects. We propose that the high level of serum MPO could be directly involved in the higher prevalence of coronary artery diseases among heavy smokers.

Abstract: field studies were carried out in the county of cruz alta, rio grande do sul state, with sternechus subsignatus boheman, and indicated that hibernating larvae distributed vertically at different depths below the soil level, and were found at the depth of 25 cm and more commonly between 5 and 10 cm. the horizontal distribution of hibernating larvae occurred at 10 cm distance far from the soybean (glycine max) plant rows. the emergence period of adults from the soil occurred during november - december. during the emergence period, adult dispersion from the edges to the center of the soybean area surrounded by corn (zea mays) was not pronounced, the maximum distance being 23 m.
