Non-Toxic Effect of Monascus purpureus Extract on Lactic Acid Bacteria Suggested Their Application in Fermented Foods  [PDF]

Abstract: The effect of Monascus purpureus extract (MPE) on probiotic lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was investigated to ascertain its application in fermented foods. Viable count of LAB was not affected after 24 hours of incubation in Man Rogosa Sharpe (MRS) broth containing MPE. The agar well-diffusion assay did not show any inhibition zone. The biotransformation of isoflavone glycosides by LAB in culture medium supplemented with MPE increased antioxidant activities. These data suggest that, nutritive and biological functionality of fermented foods can be improved by the use of MPE.

Abstract: Aluminum Nitride films were grown on and Si (100) substrate by D.C. reactive magnetron sputtering at room temperature. Influence of sputter deposition time on properties of the AlN films was studied. Structural optical and electrical properties of the film were investigated. XRD measurements showed the presence of hexagonal wurtzite structure. The optical reflectance spectra of the film were taken and the band gap calculated varied from 4.35 to 5.3 eV. Finally MIS capacitors were fabricated on silicon substrates and variation of dielectric parameter with deposition time was reported.
Is Stock Prices and Economic Activity in India Co-Integrated?  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study we investigate whether stock prices and economic activity in India are co-integrated by using monthly data from 1960 to 2013 and applying high-powered co-integration tests which have an inherent advantage of permitting structural changes in the relationships being tested and in asymmetric co-integration, along with frequently applied co-integration tests of Engle and Granger (1987) and Johansen (1988). The results of the study provide empirical evidence for reasonably saying that stock prices and economic activity in India are co-integrated and validate the prediction in financial economics literature.
Does Indian Spot Electricity Price Series Exhibit Inverse-Leverage Effect?  [PDF]

Abstract: In this study, we investigate whether Indian Spot Electricity Price Series exhibit Inverse-Leverage effect by modeling Indian spot electricity price using ARIMA-EGARCH model using data given by Indian Energy Exchange from January 1st 2014 to 31st December 2015 accounting for 730 days and 17,520 hourly spot prices for all the five regions of Indian electricity market. Conditional mean and conditional variance equations are estimated. The results of the study provide crucial insights for power market participants/open access consumers whose numbers have surpassed 3530 in Indian Energy Exchange to strategically plan their exposure in Indian spot electricity market.

Abstract: Three new types of terminally connected ABA-heterotrimesogens and heterodimesogens, composed of a bent 3,5-diphenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole central unit and one or two rod-shaped 4-cyanobiphenyl cores or one 2-phenyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole core, connected by flexible spacers, have been synthesized, and their mesomorphic behavior was studied by optical polarizing microscopy (PM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). All dimesogens exhibit broad ranges of cybotactic nematic phases (NcybA and NcybC), in some cases accompanied by additional mesophases (CybA or SmC) at lower temperature. The combination of the 3,5-diphenyl-1,2,4-oxadiazole unit with one cyanobiphenyl core leads to the removal of tilted smectic and cybotactic nematic phases (SmC, NcybC), which are replaced by the nontilted CybA phases and nematic phases composed of SmA-type clusters (NcybA). The orthogonal cybotactic nematic phases of bent-core mesogens are of special interest for achieving biaxial nematic phases of the orthorhombic type. The orthogonal (NcybA) and skewed (NcybC) cybotactic nematic phases were distinguished by XRD and optical observations.
Effect of Slow Release NPK Fertilizer Sources on the Nutrient use Efficiency in Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)

Abstract: Nutrient losses due to leaching, volatilization and fixation and the activated risk of nitrate leaching after fertilizer addition to the soil may be reduced through the use of slow-release fertilizers. Turmeric, a long duration and high yielding commercial crop consumes greater amount of nutrients from the soil as well as from applied fertilizers for a prolonged period. A field experiment was conducted to study the nutrient use efficiencies of newly formulated slow release NPK sources in turmeric during 2001-2002. These are recent introduction which are in the form of tablets, mixtures and coated ammonium phosphate, which contains all the three major nutrients in them, which were tested in comparison with conventional or standard fertilizer materials at three NPK levels viz., 75, 100 and 125% of recommended dose. The results indicated that nutrient use efficiencies viz., agronomic efficiency, apparent recovery and partial factor productivity were significantly enhanced by the application of tablet forms of NPK sources than other slow release forms as well as standard fertilizer materials.

Abstract: Achieving scalable parallelism from general programs was not successful to this point. To extract parallelism from programs has become the key focus of interest on multi-core CPUs. There are many techniques and programming models such as MPI, CUDA and OpenMP adopted in order to exploit more performance. But there is an urge to #64257;nd the best parallel programming techniques for the bene#64257;t of performance. This article shows how the performance potential bene#64257;ts the parallel programming model over sequential programming model. To support our claim, we are likely to analyze the performance in terms of execution time on both sequential and parallel implementations of naive matrix multiplication vs. Strassens matrix multiplication algorithm using OpenMP. Our analysis results show that optimizing the code using OpenMP increases the performance than sequential implementation and outperforming well with parallel algorithms.

Abstract: Oxidative stress plays an important role in malignant transformation and is postulated to be associated withincreased lipid peroxidation. The aim of this study was to determine the extent of lipid peroxidation with theantioxidant status in patients with gastric cancer. The study population consisted of fifty newly diagnosedgastric cancer patients and an equal number of age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. Lipidperoxidation as evidenced by thiobarbutric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and also the status ofenzymatic (superoxide dismutase – SOD, catalase – CAT, glutathione peroxidase – GPx, glutathionereductase – GR, glutathione S-transferase – GST) and non-enzymatic (reduced glutathione – GSH)antioxidants, were determined. Enhanced lipid peroxidation with concomitant depletion of antioxidants wasobserved in gastric cancer patients as compared to healthy control subjects. The present study highlights theoccurrence of lipid peroxidation and possible breakdown of antioxidant status in patients with gastriccarcinoma.
