Early relief of osteoarthritis symptoms with a natural mineral supplement and a herbomineral combination: A randomized controlled trial [ISRCTN38432711]

Abstract: Patients (n = 107) with mild to moderate osteoarthritis of the knee were randomly assigned to one of 4 groups; high dose sierrasil (3 g/day), low dose sierrasil (2 g/day), low dose sierrasil (2 g/day) + cat's claw extract (100 mg/day) or placebo, administered for 8 weeks. Treatment was double blinded. Primary efficacy variables were WOMAC scores (A, B, C and total). Visual analog score (VAS) for pain, consumption of rescue medication (paracetamol), and tolerability were secondary variables. Safety measures included vital signs and laboratory-based assays.Ninety-one of the 107 patients successfully completed the protocol. All four groups showed improvement in WOMAC and VAS scores after 8 weeks (p < 0.001), in all 3 groups receiving sierrasil the magnitude of benefits were greater vs. placebo (WOMAC Total 38–43% vs. 27%) but this was not statistically significant. In reference to baseline values sierrasil treated groups had a considerably faster onset of benefits. Placebo-treated individuals failed to show significant benefits at 4 weeks (11% reduction in total WOMAC). In contrast, after 1 or 2 weeks of therapy all the sierrasil groups displayed significant reductions in WOMAC scores (p < 0.05) and at week 4 displayed a 38–43% improvement. VAS was significantly improved at 4 weeks in all groups (p < 0.001) but was significantly greater in all sierrasil groups compared to placebo (p < 0.05). Rescue medication use was 28-23% lower in the herbomineral combination and high dose sierrasil groups although not statistically different from placebo (P = 0.101 and P = 0.193, respectively). Tolerability was good for all groups, no serious adverse events were noted and safety parameters remained unchanged.The natural mineral supplement, sierrasil alone and in combination with a cat's claw extract, improved joint health and function within 1–2 weeks of treatment but significant benefits over placebo were not sustained, possibly due to rescue medication masking. Abstract: We show that the cytotoxic effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on bacteria is mediated by mechanical damage to the cell wall and membrane. Two β-galactosidase-producing strains of Escherichia coli harboringgenomically integrated reporter gene constructs, namely pchbB:lacZand prpoS:lacZ, were used for the purpose. We first verified that CNTs result in an inhibition of cell growth. Enzyme activity was determined using a reporter gene assay in which CNTs were used without the lysis buffer (containing detergent). β-galactosidase activity in the presence of CNTs alone measured several fold more than the controls used (without nanotubes). This suggests that CNTs damage the cell membrane in a manner similar to the detergent in the lysis buffer and render E. coli cell walls porous, causing cell contents including enzymes to leak out into the medium. Our results support the hypothesis that mechanical damage to bacterial cell membranes is the prevailing cause of CNT-cytotoxicity.

Abstract: The ethnomedicinal practices appear to be a part of traditional system of treatment for domestic cattle in remote areas of Nepal. The knowledge of local healers with the utilization of biological resources in various ailments is still survived and is communicated verbally to limited family members. As a result, this knowledge is at threatened stage. Now days, documentation of traditional knowledge is receiving much attention. The study carried out in seven village development committees of Morang district concerns with the traditional uses of crude drugs obtained form 37 plant species belonging to 24 families which are used for the treatment of 21 common ailments of domestic cattle. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) method was applied to collect the data. The information on the correct botanical sources, family, local name, plant part used, method of preparation and method of application of different crude drugs were investigated in this study.
WiMAX or LTE: Which Technology to Adopt? A Comprehensive Comparative Study

Abstract: The industry landscape in telecommunications is changing rapidly at the moment. Services are increasingly shifting from voice to data and from circuit-switched to packet-switched ones. LTE and WiMAX are the two technologies poised to dominate next generation mobile networks. Battle between LTE & WiMAX technologies is already heating up with WiMAX being ahead due to availability of standards through IEEE 802.16 and is up and running but lacks in substantial roll out plans due to cost. On the contrary, LTE upgrades from 3G networks are rumored to be as simple as slotting in a new card in the rack. Researchers and business community is divided over the choice of LTE and WiMAX. Few researchers feel that 3G LTE can bring substantial technologies and economical benefits to operators deploying mobile networks beyond 3G. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative study to help arrive at the choice between LTE and WiMAX.

Abstract: Software development is a highly creative and collaborative endeavor in which success requires a fine degree of coordination between many people from many different disciplines, often working across different geographies and time zones and sometimes across cultural borders. When implementing software development in a global environment, a popular strategy is the establishment of globally distributed teams.Project management owes its existence as a management discipline to the complex, high technology undertakings. Projects are complex endeavors and project outcomes are far from being certain. Software development teams are plagued by management problems that result in missed deadlines, budget overruns, and canceled projects, and effective management remains an open problem. The management aspect becomes further challenging and complicated while dealing ethical, time zone, cross cultural issues inherent to a globally distributed team. In this paper we have presented an adept management framework for globally distributed teams.
Coordination diversity of new mononucleating hydrazone in 3d metal complexes: Synthesis, characterization and structural studies

Abstract: The mononucleating hydrazone ligand LH3, a condensation product of salicyloylhydrazine and (2-formylphenoxy)acetic acid, was synthesized and its coordination behavior with first row transition metal(II) ions was investigated by isolating and elucidating the structure of the complexes using elemental analysis, conductivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements, as well as IR, 1H-NMR, electronic and EPR spectral techniques. The ligand forms mononuclear metal(II) complexes of the type [CoLH(H2O)2], [NiLH(H2O)2, [CuLH] and [ZnLH]. The ligand field parameters, Dq, B and b values, in the case of the cobalt and nickel complexes support not only the octahedral geometry around the metal ion, but also imply the covalent nature of the bonding in the complexes. The EPR study revealed the presence of a spin exchange interaction in the solid copper complex and the covalent nature of the bonding. The 1H-NMR study of the zinc(II) complex indicated the non-involvement of the COOH group in the coordination. The physico-chemical study supports for the presence of octahedral geometry around cobalt(II), nickel(II) and tetrahedral geometry around copper(II) and zinc(II) ions.

Abstract: Since plants are used as therapeutic agents, the present study was conducted to evaluate the phytochemical profile and antibacterial activities of extracts of. Eclipta alba and Tylophora indica .Studies on the antibacterial activity of methanol, petroleum ether and aqueous extracts of dry leaf, stem and root of Eclipta alba and Tylophora indica was evaluated using zone of inhibition studies and minimum inhibitory concentration. The microorganisms used include Escherichia coli, Micrococcus roseus and Pseudomonas flavescens . The extract exhibited antibacterial activity against these experimental strains. Methanol extracts shows higher degree of antibacterial activity than aqueous and petroleum ether extracts. The minimum inhibitory concentration ranged between 12.5mg/mL and 75mg/mL depending on microorganism and various extract. Screening of the phytochemical extracts revealed the presence of compounds like alkaloids, glycosides, tannins and flavonoids. Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas flavescens are more sensitive where as Micrococcus roseus is less sensitive to extracts of Eclipta alba and Tylophora indica. The experimental observation shows that Eclipta alba and Tylophora indica have antibacterial activity and can be used for therapeutic purposes.
Pleiotropic Roles of a Ribosomal Protein in Dictyostelium discoideum

Abstract: The cell cycle phase at starvation influences post-starvation differentiation and morphogenesis in Dictyostelium discoideum. We found that when expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, a D. discoideum cDNA that encodes the ribosomal protein S4 (DdS4) rescues mutations in the cell cycle genes cdc24, cdc42 and bem1. The products of these genes affect morphogenesis in yeast via a coordinated moulding of the cytoskeleton during bud site selection. D. discoideum cells that over- or under-expressed DdS4 did not show detectable changes in protein synthesis but displayed similar developmental aberrations whose intensity was graded with the extent of over- or under-expression. This suggested that DdS4 might influence morphogenesis via a stoichiometric effect – specifically, by taking part in a multimeric complex similar to the one involving Cdc24p, Cdc42p and Bem1p in yeast. In support of the hypothesis, the S. cerevisiae proteins Cdc24p, Cdc42p and Bem1p as well as their D. discoideum cognates could be co-precipitated with antibodies to DdS4. Computational analysis and mutational studies explained these findings: a C-terminal domain of DdS4 is the functional equivalent of an SH3 domain in the yeast scaffold protein Bem1p that is central to constructing the bud site selection complex. Thus in addition to being part of the ribosome, DdS4 has a second function, also as part of a multi-protein complex. We speculate that the existence of the second role can act as a safeguard against perturbations to ribosome function caused by spontaneous variations in DdS4 levels.

Abstract: The objective of this paper was to review the information about mouth dissolving tablets prepared by solid dispersion technique. Mouth dissolving tablets are being increasingly recognized in the market because of their potential benefits over conventional tablets. Solid dispersion is an innovative technique to improve solubility of drug moieties with low solubility profile. Formulation of solid dispersion as mouth dissolving tablet not only improves dissolution characteristics of drug but also provides ease of administration and quicker action. Various techniques used for the preparation of mouth dissolving tablet and solid dispersion are described in this article. Furthermore, the various characterization parameters used for mouth dissolving tablets formulated by solid dispersion technique are discussed

Abstract: Aim: To describe the management and outcome of patients with duodenal webs, managed over a period of 12 years in our unit.Methods: It is a retrospective case series of 18 patients with congenital duodenal webs, managed in our unit, between 1999 and 2011. The medical record of these patients was retrieved and analyzed for demographic details, clinical presentation, associated anomalies, and outcome. Results: The median age of presentation was 8 days (range 1 day to 1.5 years). Antenatal diagnosis was made in only 2 (11.1%) patients. The commonest presentation was bilious vomiting. Associated anomalies were present in 8/18 patients, common being malrotation of gut. Down’s syndrome was seen in 2 patients and congenital heart disease in 1 patient. One patient had double duodenal webs. There was a delay in presentation of more than 5 days of life in 11/18 (61%) patients. Three patients who presented beyond neonatal age group had fenestrated duodenal membranes causing partial obstruction. In addition, the diagnosis was missed in patients operated for malrotation elsewhere (n=2), imperforate anus (n=2) and esophageal atresia with tracheo-esophageal fistula (n=1). A lateral duodenotomy with excision of the obstructive membrane was done in all patients. A trans-anastomotic tube (TAT) for enteral feeding was used in 8 patients The mortality rate was 4/18 (22%); the main causes being sepsis, prematurity, very low birth weight and associated congenital anomalies. The mean hospital stay for the 14 survivors was 18 days. Total parental nutrition (TPN) was not given to any patient.Conclusions: Congenital duodenal webs are different as the diagnosis is often missed especially in case of perforated webs. Outcome depends upon the time of presentation and associated anomalies. The use of TAT feeding for nutritional support is an easy alternative to TPN.
