Growth and Characterization of New Non Linear Optical Bis-Glycine Hydro Bromide (BGHB) Single Crystal  [PDF]
S. Sampthkrishnan, N. Balamurugan, R. Kumutha, Y. Vidyalakshmi, S. Muthu
Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering (JMMCE) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jmmce.2012.116043
Abstract: A new non linear optical material, Bis-Glycine Hydro bromide (BGHB), has been synthesized. Single crystals of BGHB have been grown successfully by slow evaporation method. The solubility of the material was measured in various solvents such as ethanol, acetone and water. It was found to have extremely low solubility in ethanol and acetone. The grown crystals were characterized by recording the powder diffraction and identifying the diffracting planes. Using single crystal diffractometer the morphology of BGHB crystal was identified. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic studies, optical behavior such as UV-visible-NIR absorption, Thermogravimetic (TG) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses have been performed to show that BGHB is thermally stable up to 168.5℃ and there is no phase transition and decomposition till 168.5℃. Anisotropy in the hardness behavior has been observed while measuring at different crystal planes by Vicker hardness test.
Quando o humor azeda: o episódio Rushdie em retrospectiva
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
Estudos Avan?ados , 1996, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-40141996000200007
Abstract: this paper is an attempt to review in retrospect the episode involving salman rushdie and his novel the satanic verses. i begin my analysis by calling attention to the fact that both the plot of the novel and the socio-historico-political backdrop against which it is projected are so steeped in india's cultural milieu that it is indeed surprising that the novel became such an explosive issue on the international scenario. but then i argue that there is an important lesson to be learned from all this concerning reading and interpretation. no matter what rushdie or anybody else could possibly have done by way of retracing the steps or pleading with iran's enraged ayatollahs for clemency, there was no way his novel could have been subjected to a re-reading - the one final and definitive interpretation had already been foisted upon the ill-fated novel. this is rushdie's postmodern predicamente. irony - the one weapon he had so skilfully wielded not only in the satanic verses but in his earlier novels as well, turned back on him, producing an unexpected boomerang effect. what we have here is a case of the politics of irony at work.
A IDEOLOGIA DO SUPRIMIDO: OU, COMO N?O TEORIZAR A RESPEITO DA IDEOLOGIA
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 1998, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44501998000100006
Abstract: in this paper, i argue against the contemporary tendency to confine ideology to the sphere of subjectivity and "point of view", as defended by paul simpson (1993) in his book language, ideology, and point of view. my principal criticism against the view is that it simply amounts to a re-affirmation of certain of the conceptual categories with which we have for long been accustomed to think. rather, i contend, we ought to try to interrogate those very categories with a view to teasing out the instabilities that characterise them. i argue that there is an urgent need to deconstruct the very opposition between ideology, point of view etc. on the one hand, and science, theory, or whatever that one might wish to posit on the other.
Os caminhos da pragmática no Brasil
RAJAGOPALAN, Kanavillil;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 1999, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44501999000300013
Abstract: this paper traces the history of the study of pragmatics in brazil. it is shown that brazilian researches have, by and large, remained attentive to major developments in the field taking place elsewhere in the world. of particular importance is the burgeoning tendency to focus attention on social issues affecting the day-to-day lives of ordinary people. more and more researchers are realizing the need to assume a critical role in relation to the theories they encounter in the literature.
Postcolonial world and postmodern identity: some implications for language teaching
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2005, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502005000300003
Abstract: this paper discusses some of the consequences of the new ways of thinking about identity. it is argued that identity, as conceived in terms of postmodernity, has a direct impact on language teaching, given that the very concept of language (just as much as that of the native speaker of a language) (both of which have traditionally been viewed in all-or-nothing terms) will need to be rethought.
"Corporeality" in metaphor studies: why it is so easy to miss the point
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
DELTA: Documenta??o de Estudos em Lingüística Teórica e Aplicada , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S0102-44502010000300007
Abstract: it is argued that the notion of corporeality that is so much present in discussions about mind, language and the way metaphor functions in real life is best understood as first and foremost having to do with corpo-reality rather than corporeal-ity. this is a far more revolutionary idea than often seen to be and calls for a thorough revision of many of our well-entrenched dogmas. not surprisingly, rearguard maneuvers designed to blunt its thrust are all too common in metaphor studies.
A tenant's lot: on paying the rent or facing the prospect of eviction - a response to Bazerman
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2010, DOI: 10.1590/S1984-63982010000200011
Abstract: bazerman's point (cf. bazerman, this issue of rbla) that the whole notion of plagiarism is beset with a fundamental, conceptual paradox is argued to be absolutely right as far as it goes but is shown to be only one of a plethora of inter-related paradoxes that plague the entire conceptual field. on the one hand, this makes plagiarism a concept (if at all it is one!) so very difficult to grapple with and particular cases of alleged plagiarism next to impossible to pin down with any amount of clarity or hundred per cent certainty. but on the other hand, it is perfectly reasonable to continue viewing the issue of plagiarism as an ethical one though not necessarily a moral imperative.
Exposing young children to english as a foreign language: the emerging role of world english
Rajagopalan, Kanavillil;
Trabalhos em Linguística Aplicada , 2009, DOI: 10.1590/S0103-18132009000200002
Abstract: the focus of this paper is on language acquisition by young children in contexts of societal multilingualism and what lessons can be learned from it for language learning in general. it is argued that research in this area is hampered by the fact that it is almost exclusively based on a monolingual's experience of acquiring the only language they have at their disposal. by implication, then, a multilingual person's linguistic repertoire is seen as a special case of, or a departure from, the monolingual's. the case for taking a fresh look at societal multilingualism is made by considering the phenomenon of 'world english' which, it is argued, can only be understood by approaching it as a language in the making that draws its sustenance from situations where different languages are in constant contact, influencing one another.
Language politics and the linguist
Kanavillil Rajagopalan
Revista Brasileira de Linguística Aplicada , 2005,
Abstract: This paper focuses on language politics as it is currently unfolding in Brazil. Thanks to a legislative bid by a member of the House of Representatives to curb the wide-spread use of English in the country, large segments of the country's population have suddenly become interested in language-related issues. Professional linguists were taken by surprise and have, by and large, been reduced to the status of mere spectators. In an attempt to address the issue, I argue that there is an urgent need to attend to the wider public and engage them in a fruitful dialogue.
